Green guru and geophysicist James Lovelock, considered one of the pioneering scientists of the 20th century, has officially turned his back on man-made global warming claims and the green movement’s focus on renewable energy. Lovelock conceived the Gaia theory back in the 1970s, describing the Earth’s biosphere as “an active, adaptive control system able to maintain the earth in homeostasis.”
In an April 2, 2014 BBC TV interview, Lovelock has come out swinging at his fellow environmentalists, accusing the new UN IPCC global warming report of plagiarizing his now retracted climate claims from his 2006 book ‘The Revenge of Gaia.’
“The last IPCC report is very similar to the (now retracted) statements I made in my book about 8 years ago, called The Revenge of Gaia. It’s almost as if they’ve copied it,” Lovelock told BBC Newsnight television program on April 3.
BBC interviewer Jeremy Paxman noted to Lovelock during the April 2 program: “Sure. But you then, after publishing these apocalyptic predictions, you then retracted them.”
The newly skeptical Lovelock responded: “Well, that’s my privilege. You see, I’m an independent scientist. I’m not funded by some government department or commercial body or anything like that. If I make a mistake, then I can go public with it. And you have to, because it is only by making mistakes that you can move ahead.”
Lovelock dismissed the entire basis for global warming concerns in his BBC television interview. “Take this climate matter everybody is thinking about. They all talk, they pass laws, they do things, as if they knew what was happening. I don’t think anybody really knows what’s happening. They just guess. And a whole group of them meet together and encourage each other’s guesses,” Lovelock explained.

The answer to your question may be as follows. The CAGW movement was adopted when a careless scientist noticed that both global temperatures and CO2 were increasing at the same time. He didn’t bother looking farther to see that CO2 also increased in the prior decades while global temperatures were dropping. Ideologues saw this as a crutch to denigrate the public into adopting their greatest passions – population control, redistribution of wealth, one world government, and social justice. Many admitted that they didn’t care whether CAGW was real or not, their goal was too important. Maurice Strong, IPCC cofounder, state that the goal was to destroy industrialized civilization. The IPCC charter restricted the commission to study ONLY MAN’S effect on global climate.

Pollution is a BIG problem, and the desecration of the Earth by coal mining, oil exploration, and now fracking just makes me want to cry. But, I’m a big believer that nuclear power, in the medium term, can prevent even more destruction and pollution, and could if need be, by the world wide installation of 700 AP1000 type reactors, suck all the excess CO2 out of the air, or seawater, and convert it to a net zero-emission form of liquid hydrocarbon fuel. It is calculated it would take 100 years to do so with that number of reactors. Then anti-nukes talk about the waste from nuclear energy, but really there is no waste, all by-products are usable, if it weren’t for the irrational fear of all types of radiation.

A little more clarity….hypothesize, gather data, manipulate data to fit original hypothesis, publish paper, refuse requests for original data, smear skeptics.
Years later when real data contradicts your hypothesis, change the title from global warming to climate change and then make argument that too much or too little snow, too much or too little rain, too many or too few tornadoes/hurricanes, too many or too few droughts are all caused by man made climate change.
I for one am grateful to the Lovelocks and Gores of the world. There is no denying that there has been some warming and there is no denying that CO2 is increasing in the atmosphere. Alarmists convinced the general population that we are destroying the planet but we could redeem ourselves by being a bit less materialistic. Now no one can dare dispute the “facts” of global warming without being a pariah even if there is a pause in warming and sea levels haven’t risen in accordance with predictions. The President of the United States and the United Nations are pursuing policies that will ultimately cause the developed world to consume less resources and reduce their standard of living. Regardless of how we get there, that is a laudable achievement. And isn’t this kind of achievement a benefit of any good science? Even if it may have been a lie or even if the data is currently being falsified, it is a beautiful lie.

There is no denying that there has been some cooling since 2002. A look at any of the six global temperature databases tracing monthly global temperatures since 1850 shows that. Those databases also who that global temperatures varies from cooling to warming in 60 year cycles. We are on schedule with the current 30 year cooling phase. More research shows that global temperatures have been decreasing fro 8,000 years while CO2 has been increasing for 7,200 years as CO2 is released from the ocean.

Compare the graphs of Mauna Loa CO2 and Hilo ocean temperatures. CO2 increases after the ocean warm in September, and decreases after the ocean cools.

Addressing your points. CO2 is a GHG. But while it has been increasing since 1880 global temperature decreased from 1880 to 1910 and from 1940 to 1980 as can be seen in the link I gave. These temperature changes correspond to celestial mechanics, not CO2 concentration.

The extent to which CO2 affects global temperature is known as Global Warming Potential (GWP). This can be computed from a formula used by the IPCC and the DoE. The GWPs of the major GHGs are water vapor – 95%, man-made CO2 – 0.117% and man-made methane – 0.066%. Of an IPCC projected 4C increase in global temperature by the year 2100, man-made CO2 will contribute 0.0468 C and man-made Methane will contribute 0.00264. Nations have spent $1 Trillion so far to reduce CO2 by 30%. They are now spending $1 Billion a day so that man will not contribute 0.002196 C to Earth’s temperature by the year 2100. You are incorrect with many items! The effects of CO2 are cumulative! Once in the upper atmosphere they stay for an estimated 100 years. Of course there were not effects in the earliest years. The levels much reach a critical state before they act as a heat trapping barrier. We are entering that state now and we have seen higher temperatures. Because it is cumulative the percentage contribution of both CO2 and Methane are growing at an exponential rate with the development in India and China. You are quote best case numbers not worse case. It will be somewhere in between. Last 1 trillion was not spent for global warming. Most of it was spend to clean up the smoke stack emissions from energy industry for air quality issues not Global warming.
No real scientist dismisses the fact that CO2 levels are increasing, and that they will lead to some warming, it’s all about what the climate sensitivity to that CO2 is.
Everyone agrees, both skeptics, and alarmists, that a doubling of the CO2 from it’s preindustrial levels will directly trap enough radiation to increase the temperature about 1 degree. That is simple math. The difference of opinion between the two groups is what happens AFTER that 1 degree increase. Alarmists believe that that 1 degree increase will lead to a positive feedback in the climate where more, and more water vapor (another green house gas) will be pumped into the atmosphere, and the temperature will climb up to 6 degrees. Most skeptics believe that that one degree increase in temperature resulting from a doubling of CO2 will lead to a slight negative feedback, and will end up with an overall warming of 0.6 degrees.
Why the difference? Alarmists have based their models on the belief that nearly all of the warming that occured in the 80’s and 90’s was the result of increasing CO2 levels. They believe that nothing else could have caused the warming. But the problem with that is that CO2 levels have continued to rise, and we have had no additional warming in the last 15+ years. Skeptics believe that only a small amount of the warming that took place in the 80’s and 90’s was because of CO2, and the vast majority was from natural cycles that we currently are not familiar with. That is what he was talking about when he was talking about the effect of the oceans.
Besides the oceans, there is the effect of the Sun that is also ignored by the warmists. It’s becoming clear that there Sun plays a much larger role in the climate than it is given credit for by the alarmists. If you go back to last summer, those who believe in CO2 based climate change were once again calling for a mild winter, but the almanac was calling for a VERY brutal winter. Why? The almanc uses sunspots as one of the main factors in it’s calculations. People have been watching the Sun for sunspots for hundreds of years. Why? Because they realized that the number of sunspots was a direct harbinger of future harvests. It’s now becoming clearer that galactic cosmic rays play a major role in cloud formation, and the Earth’s albedo. When there are more sunspots, that indicates greater solar magnetic activity, and a larger Heliosphere. A larger Heliospere, means fewer galactic cosmic rays reach the Earth, and therefore there are less clouds, and a smaller albedo. Smaller albedo means more warming.
Increased CO2 will have an effect on climate, both alarmists, and skeptics agree with that, wether it’s harmless (or even benificial with increased crop production), or dangerous, that is where the difference of opinion comes in.
You have one problem the alarmist say 6 degrees, the skeptics say less than one degree. Both are worst or best case scenarios. It is very unusual that either min or max is correct and it will fall somewhere in the middle. What would 3 degrees mean. The almanac is not based on science and your interpretation is not correct. The weather in the US alone does not predict or even represent the total temperature. The weather was only brutal in certain sections of the US other areas were milder than usual. I like that you at least want to look at the data. The problem I have with skeptics is the assertion that they just made it up to make money. CO2 will effect the temperature. Anyone that refuses to see this is putting their head in the sand. Nobody can assert that dumping CO2 into the atmosphere is a good thing. They believe that a rise in the tiny trace gas CO2 will cause runaway global warming and climate catastrophe. But it has not. Global temperatures are now at the same level that they were at in 1997. If CO2 has any effect on temperature, it is far too small to measure.
The only honest scientist is a skeptic. If there had been a long-term correlation between the rise in CO2 and global temperature, skeptics would accept that. But the alarmist crowd is different. Alarmists are motivated by religious belief. That is why they make easy pickins’ for the witch doctors at the UN.

Although the facts around CO2 and other pollutants do alarm me, I don’t see how civilization can realistically make drastic cuts. We are going to have to ride it out and let nature take it’s course.
The key point here is that Lovelock is a scientist able to maintain his intellectual independence and practice of the scientific method. Most of these “environmentalists” are some sort of lobbyists or or politicians, typically with political science degrees or some similar connection. It is the most bitter irony that they are stuck to their status quo precisely as they accuse their opponents of doing — like coal proponents being unable to change their minds because coal and its resultant bad effects are what they make a living off of. Global warming is just a game to limit the use of fossil fuels and grow government. Cheap and abundant energy fuels freedom, liberal central planners don’t like that. So global warming was born in an attempt to destroy capitalism. No one can know what the normal temperature of the earth should be, we don’t have the data. The earth being thousands or millions of years old.
Teach your children the truth and that is green energy is usually more harmful than current fossil fuels. The alarmists want us to use things like nuclear power which is fine till we have an oops moment. The current battery technology uses some very expensive, very hazardous materials. Do you really want to be forced to trust most American drivers with a battery that can explode and poison everyone around on your way to pick up the kids? The electricity comes from coal power plants…. Yep, how the heck does that help the situation? Perhaps we should use wind power. Sounds great till you hear how many Bald Eagles and other rare birds that are killed because of those things. By UK environmental estimates the average wind turbine is about 20% efficient and extremely expensive to repair.
Ok, what about solar? Sounds great except what do you do when there is no sun. We could always store the excess power in lead acid batteries. Lead acid batteries have an life expectancy of anywhere between 5 to 10 years max. How many people do you think would just toss those things out with the trash.
If you want to know what the enviornmental movement is all about then look no further than the light bulb. We use to have very very cheap light bulbs known as incondescent bulbs. Philips came out with an LED bulb that did cost $60.00 and no one wanted it so they had the government phase out the .69 cent bulbs and force us to go with florescent and LED bulbs. Florescent bulbs contain mercury and lead, lots of it. LED bulbs also contain lead as well. Both types are loaded with carcinogens. The environmental movement is about fleecing the people of money and power.

Whole thing has been a sham for years perpetuated by ‘climate change’ journalists who have to keep themselves in a job, scientists who ‘sold out’ just to get funding and governments using it as another mechanism to both control the masses through fear and then tax you for it. They just have to understand geological stratigraphy……look at the rock record….that provides evidence of real and naturally driven climate change! Anything recent is mere ‘weather’ as we know, even compared to the Little Ice Age in the 17 and 18 centuries, it is feck all.
I’ve always held that there are no Climate Scientists. There are climate data gatherers, climate modelers, climate priests, but no Climate Scientists.
The university degrees these so called experts have are fraudulent. These folks are the modern day equivalent of Phrenologists.
Ask yourself a simple question. How do these experts determine the earths temperature from just 1000 years ago. There were no thermometers back then, and there are no historical temperature readings. They use “proxies” to arrive at what they THINK the temperature was. Then they use the same techniques to guess at what the temps were millions of years ago. These are guesses. This is not science.
Then they compound the problem. They take guesses on temperature along with guesses of sea level and even guesses of time based on carbon 14 testing that is known to be easily falsified. What they proclaim loudly as being accurate is in fact their guess.
This is not science. These folks should have their Doctorates invalidated as their entire field of study is as yet an area devoid of any reasonable certainty and not deserving of being labeled as a legitimate science.
Mr. Lovelock confirmed what most reasonable people already suspected. There are many of us (and now Mr. Lovelock and others who are speaking “Power to the Truth” on the subject) who have rejected the Global Warming hype and hyperbole (now, with the left running from that moniker “Global Warming” by calling it “Climate Change”) from the get-go. We understood the value and integrity of using the empirical method and knew that the “Climate Change” hucksters had abandoned doing real science in exchange for selling their souls for grant money or subsidies from Crony capitalists (like Al Gore) who will make billions off of the UN scam.
Simple rule: Always follow the money because that is what drives these types of “populist” movements. All of the “Climate Change” herd with few exceptions, get their funding from these “suspect” sources including government and the crony capitalists in the “Green” energy industry who will without a doubt, greedily benefit.
One has to be a real moron to believe that man caused CO2 can actually change climate. CO2 makes up only .04% (400 ppm) of the atmosphere. Even if man contributed 10% of that number, it would not have an impact on Earth’s climate. It’s amazing to me that people buy into this foolishness, nobody seems to have a sense of proportion. We are also dealing with developing countries like China and India starting to consume at North American levels, with only so much oil, gas, etc. I agree, that the communication has been alarmist on climate change, but can you really blame everyone involved as if it’s part of some conspiracy? If the models really were true, wouldn’t you be communicating with a sense of urgency. The bottom line, is there are other reasons besides climate change, to move to renewable energy systems. For one, they are decentralized energy. So all the people saying, climate change is really about control, I don’t see it. Germany has largely been inspired to move to renewable’s, because of climate change, and all that has happened is over 40& of the countries energy is now produced by citizen-owned co-ops and everyday Joe’s, away from government and corporations.

a.) Studying reliable observations of the Sun – Earth’s heat source – and

It is my understanding that our planet is in an elliptical orbit around our source of heat, the Sun. An elliptical orbit may not be precise from year to year. Only God knows for certain and He is in full charge. If the orbit changes, even slightly, there will be measurable changes. Such changes do not constitute predictable change. Weather is a changeable phenomenon, predictable to an inexact degree. Therefore, be prepared and tell Al Gore to clean up his energy goggling home and go out and weed the garden during the heat of the day, without a hat.
Climate change is serfdom.
