Greenpeace Co-Founder Dr. Patrick Moore: ‘I fear a global cooling’ – Rips Obama for ‘hollow’ climate claims

Ecologist Dr. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Greenpeace, warned “I fear a global cooling,” during his keynote address to the Ninth International Conference on Climate Change in Las Vegas on Tuesday. Moore, who left Greenpeace in 1986 because he felt it had become too radical, is the author of “Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout: The Making of a Sensible Environmentalist.” (Watch climate conference live here)

Moore noted that a cooling would adversely impact agriculture, and said:  “Let’s hope for a little warming as opposed to a little cooling. I would rather it got a little warmer.” (Watch Moore video here at the Heartland Institute event)

Moore noted that “the U.S. is currently been cooling” and noted that there has been “no global warming for nearly 18 years.” He also mocked the notion that “everything is due to global warming.”

“If it warms two degrees, hopefully more in Canada in the North…maybe it would be a good thing if it did,” Moore explained.

Moore noted that carbon dioxide is a trace essential gas in the atmosphere and is not the control knob of the Earth’s climate.

“CO2 is the most important nutrient for all life on earth,” he noted.

“There are so many [climate] variables that we can’t control and when you do an experiment you have to control all the variables except the one you are studying if you want to get a clean result. There are even variables we do not even understand that we cannot control,” he said.

“So it is virtually impossible to think of doing an experiment where we would be able to tweeze out the impact of CO2 versus the hundreds of other variables at work. Which is why you could never make a model that would predict the climate,” he added.

Moore also took criticized President Barack Obama.

“The President seems to say it is sufficient to say the ‘science is settled’. It is hollow statement with no content,” Moore noted.

He also warned that the education system was failing children when it comes to climate change science.

“Change the way our kids are being taught about this subject because if we don’t there will be a whole generation of people who are just blindly following this climate hysteria,” Moore said.

“Our children are not taught logic, they are not taught what the scientific method is, and they are taught that carbon dioxide is pollution. They are told it is carbon now as if it were soot,” he added.

The Greenpeace elites would deny billions of poor people access to energy, Moore notes, while at the same time living lavishly, by comparison. Greenpeace hypocritically boasts of the “super-efficient electric motors” on its new $22 million yacht, says More, but doesn’t mention that the boat is also powered by diesel engines that, of course, use the dreaded “fossil fuels” Greenpeace wants to deny to others.

If they tried that today, they would be run out on a rail…. But if they purchase enough propaganda from “scientist” with grant money over time, to the point where that poll reads 51% are now believers in global warming, it would be much easier to levy that tax on us.

  10. Moore makes a lot of valid points but too many people think he is too controversial. For the sake of civility, why can’t the majority just agree to continue to reduce all pollution (water, air, land) and continuously strive for efficiency in every thing we do. I believe myself to be a conservative (registered NPP- no political party in California) and do not believe in “wasting” resources. I recently got a small SUV which gets 27 MPG and would have gladly paid $3,000 more for a similar model that got 50 MPG. I just like saving money (another conservative idea) and would pay for that. I put solar panels on my roof primarily because it saves me $500 per month in electrical costs. What more reason do I need. I have planted lots of trees around my home because they make my house more comfortable, more attractive, and increase my property value. Every one of these things that I mentioned above reduces carbon even though that was not my primary intent.

With my driving habits, if I found a vehicle that got 44% better gas mileage and assuming the price of gas remained under $4.00/gallon (big assumption at this point), it would take me six years to break even. Our electric bill at the highest is less than $200 a month, so if your electric bill is now $0 at the least and you are saving $500, you are still using too much power.

Two story house on hill in SoCal, 90-100 degrees every day, 4 adults (at least one person in house 24 hrs per day), 2 air conditioners, one pool pump running 8 hours per day, and finally, our electrical rate for Edison Tier 4 is $.32 per KwH. Yours is probably around $.10 to .$12. Even the LADWP rate in Los Angeles is only around $.14. At $.12, it doesn’t make sense to install panels. At $.32, it’s less than a 5 year payout. It’s all political. Basically, they are just screwing the professional middle class.

        1. If you can get your installed solar generation costs below $2.40 per Watt, your payback period will be twenty years at $0.12 per kWh, without any tax-credit subsidies, but only it you can take advantage of “net energy metering” (NEM) credits with your utility.

          I generate 50+kWH per day (April, May, June) with 596 square feet of rooftop PV modules (28 315W 72-cell monocrystalline PV panels) installed with a 26.6 degree tilt at 195 degrees azimuth, and keep the house nicely cool in the Arizona desert. This is much more energy harvested than I use, enough to also keep a short-trip Nissan Leaf 24.5 kWh battery charged.

      1. In theory, you are correct in a perfect world. I failed to mention that Edison can take my power when they need it by turning off my air conditioners by remote control. When it gets really hot, electrical demand grows so high that Edison has to buy spot out-of-state power for as much as $40 (not $.40) per KwH. This cost gets passed on in the rate base which increases the base cost for everyone. Because they can grab my power for free anytime they need it, their need for spot, out-of-state electricity is a lot lower. Also, local solar panels reduce the necessity of building multi billion dollar electricity transmission lines from the mid-west to California. These costs also get thrown into the rate base. One final consideration, most of the out-of-state electricity is produced from coal.

    before they show no fruition. It might just focus data gathering at

At various times I have attempted repeatedly with individuals to get them to deal with data, even baiting them with data for their side, but none have ever been willing to argue based on logic or reason.   24. As a structural engineer I use complex analysis models that determine loads and stresses in structures that have a high degree of variable input. It is easy to change the outcome of my model by making slight changes to the structural elements such as the degree of stiffness of a connection or by changing the variables/coefficents representing the materials used in the construction. It’s easy for for me to understand how these “Scientists” get the results they are looking for by influencing the models to show the results they want. What they fail to do is adjust the model so that their results match real life data before they use the model to project the future climate. That and the fact that they neglect the most significant variable, the behavior of the sun.

    2. David – Thank you for calmly making this point. Has any computer model been able to “predict” or reconstruct the past 100 or 10,000 years using actual temperature, sea level and CO2 data? I’ve looked and failed to find anything. My research (I’m a scientist) shows that since 1900 man has increased CO2 by 33% but CO2 in the atmosphere on whole is up only 1 in 10,000. Is it possible that a 1 in 10,000 increase in a trace atmospheric gas required for all life on the surface of the planet caused the 1.32 degree increase?

    The fact that temperatures are actually stable and or dropping is still not enough proof that their silly models and simplistic explanations for climate drivers are wrong.

    They insist they are right, even though they have been found to be consistently wrong, they falsify data to prop up their positions, and when caught claim that it’s a completely valid method of proving they are right, even with all of that their models are not accurate.

    I predict that someday we will be able to model the climate fairly accurately, and that what these phony scientist have been doing will be laughed at and considered to be the modern day equivalent of a Ouija Board, real scientist will wonder how these political hacks were ever taken seriously.

  42. For years, I have been warning about the dangers of global cooling and the inevitable re-glaciation of the northern hemisphere. Typically, inter-glacial periods last about 15,000 years and then catastrophically, reverse. We’re due. I have also been predicting for years that in the future, Mankind will work very, very hard to keep the climate warm to prevent the far worse calamity of a prolonged cooling period.

  65. Well they were all screaming of a mini ice age and global cooling in the 70’s. That turned to Global Warming, now a more generic climate change. Any way you look at it Man has little to no actual impact of the Earth’s climate on a global scale. Our weather and the cooling and warming trends are dictated by our sun. The more active it is the hotter and more violent our weather. The sun is in the middle of a solar maximum thus increasing the likelihood of violent weather. Now as the sun’s activity starts to fall as it moves past the midway point in the cycle things will start to settle down. When the sun goes into its minimum phase temperatures will fall and could cause another mini ice age like the one that hit in the 1460’s

      1. And now NOAA has finally (no doubt reluctantly) released temperature data from its subset of ultra accurate terrestrial temperature gauges. These are spread fairly uniformly across the US and have evidently been in place since 2005, so almost a decade. Turns out that the US temperature has, during that period, dropped by about 1/2 degree! I haven’t noticed any mention of this by the lying denying major news media.

        Of course, that’s consistent. Neither have they been admitting that there has been no additional temperature increase for the past 17 years.

If you understand the dramatic effect CO2-breathing, oxygen-emitting cyanobactaria had on the earth’s early poisonous atmosphere BEFORE plant life came into existence, you should also understand that cyanobacteria alone can easily deal with man-made CO2. They will increase in number, produce more oxygen in return, and that extra oxygen will interact with any extra methane produced by cow farts and termites.

      It was warming from 1850 to 1879, 1910 to 1942 and 1972 to 2002.

      In the last decade CO2 emission are increasing at a rate of over 3% which is twice the 1960s rate. In the last decade global temperatures have been declining.

Secondly, you have only given the global surface anomalies for 20S-20N and excluded the polar regions, upper and deep oceans where temperature anomalies were the highest in the record. Surface temperatures represent 2% of the overall warming of the global climate for which warming has ‘paused’ (similar pauses occur throughout the record – see prior note on selective data presentation). The other 98% goes to land, ice, upper and deep ocean warming which has increased in energy approximately 275 ZJ during the time period you proffer. Now if warming as you postulate has paused the energy gain would be zero ZJ. 90% of the energy is heating the upper and deep ocean with the latter now containing more than 40% of the increased energy. The oceans are heating at a rapid pace equivalent to 4 Hiroshima atomic bomb detonations per second. You may want to view the Kelvin wave that is currently emerging in the eastern Pacific and bringing some of this energy to the surface and 2014 and 2015 could be record troposphere temperatures.

In addition the EU has pursued this scheme by purchasing “offsets” from countries such as China paying them billions of dollars to destroy atmospheric pollutants, such as CFC-23, which were manufactured purely in order to be destroyed.

    63) It is claimed that the average global temperature was relatively unchanging in pre-industrial times but sky-rocketed since 1900, and will increase by several degrees more over the next 100 years according to Penn State University researcher Michael Mann. There is no convincing empirical evidence that past climate was unchanging, nor that 20th century changes in average global temperature were unusual or unnatural.

    64) Michael Mann of Penn State University has actually shown that the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age did in fact exist, which contrasts with his earlier work which produced the “hockey stick graph” which showed a constant temperature over the past thousand years or so followed by a recent dramatic upturn.

    65) The globe’s current approach to climate change in which major industrialised countries agree to nonsensical targets for their CO2 emissions by a given date, as it has been under the Kyoto system, is very expensive.

    70) Richard Lindzen, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wrote: “The notion of a static, unchanging climate is foreign to the history of the Earth or any other planet with a fluid envelope. Such hysteria (over global warming) simply represents the scientific illiteracy of much of the public, the susceptibility of the public to the substitution of repetition for truth.”

    71) Despite the 1997 Kyoto Protocol’s status as the flagship of the fight against climate change it has been a failure.

    72) The first phase of the EU’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which ran from 2005 to 2007 was a failure. Huge over-allocation of permits to pollute led to a collapse in the price of carbon from €33 to just €0.20 per tonne meaning the system did not reduce emissions at all.

    73) The EU trading scheme, to manage carbon emissions has completely failed and actually allows European businesses to duck out of making their emissions reductions at home by offsetting, which means paying for cuts to be made overseas instead.

    74) To date “cap and trade” carbon markets have done almost nothing to reduce emissions.

    75) In the United States , the cap-and-trade is an approach designed to control carbon emissions and will impose huge costs upon American citizens via a carbon tax on all goods and services produced in the United States. The average family of four can expect to pay an additional $1700, or £1,043, more each year. It is predicted that the United States will lose more than 2 million jobs as the result of cap-and-trade schemes.

    76) Dr Roy Spencer, a principal research scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, has indicated that out of the 21 climate models tracked by the IPCC the differences in warming exhibited by those models is mostly the result of different strengths of positive cloud feedback – and that increasing CO2 is insufficient to explain global-average warming in the last 50 to 100 years.

    77) Why should politicians devote our scarce resources in a globally competitive world to a false and ill-defined problem, while ignoring the real problems the entire planet faces, such as: poverty, hunger, disease or terrorism.

    78) A proper analysis of ice core records from the past 650,000 years demonstrates that temperature increases have come before, and not resulted from, increases in CO2 by hundreds of years.

    79) Since the cause of global warming is mostly natural, then there is in actual fact very little we can do about it. (We are still not able to control the sun).

    80) A substantial number of the panel of 2,500 climate scientists on the United Nation’s International Panel on Climate Change, which created a statement on scientific unanimity on climate change and man-made global warming, were found to have serious concerns.

    81) The UK’s Met Office has been forced this year to re-examine 160 years of temperature data after admitting that public confidence in the science on man-made global warming has been shattered by revelations about the data.

    82) Politicians and activists push for renewable energy sources such as wind turbines under the rhetoric of climate change, but it is essentially about money – under the system of Renewable Obligations. Much of the money is paid for by consumers in electricity bills. It amounts to £1 billion a year.

    87) The Government’s Renewable Energy Strategy contains a massive increase in electricity generation by wind power costing around £4 billion a year over the next twenty years. The benefits will be only £4 to £5 billion overall (not per annum). So costs will outnumber benefits by a range of between eleven and seventeen times.

    88) Whilst CO2 levels have indeed changed for various reasons, human and otherwise, just as they have throughout history, the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased since the beginning of the industrial revolution, and the growth rate has now been constant for the past 25 years.

    89) It is a myth that CO2 is a pollutant, because nitrogen forms 80% of our atmosphere and human beings could not live in 100% nitrogen either: CO2 is no more a pollutant than nitrogen is and CO2 is essential to life.

    90) Politicians and climate activists make claims to rising sea levels but certain members in the IPCC chose an area to measure in Hong Kong that is subsiding. They used the record reading of 2.3 mm per year rise of sea level.

    91) The accepted global average temperature statistics used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change show that no ground-based warming has occurred since 1998.

    92) If one factors in non-greenhouse influences such as El Nino events and large volcanic eruptions, lower atmosphere satellite-based temperature measurements show little, if any, global warming since 1979, a period over which atmospheric CO2 has increased by 55 ppm (17 per cent).

    93) US President Barack Obama pledged to cut emissions by 2050 to equal those of 1910 when there were 92 million Americans. In 2050, there will be 420 million Americans, so Obama’s promise means that emissions per head will be approximately what they were in 1875. It simply will not happen.

    94) The European Union has already agreed to cut emissions by 20 percent to 2020, compared with 1990 levels, and is willing to increase the target to 30 percent. However, these are unachievable and the EU has already massively failed with its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), as EU emissions actually rose by 0.8 percent from 2005 to 2006 and are known to be well above the Kyoto goal.

    95) Australia has stated it wants to slash greenhouse emissions by up to 25 percent below 2000 levels by 2020, but the pledges were so unpopular that the country’s Senate has voted against the carbon trading Bill, and the Opposition’s Party leader has now been ousted by a climate change sceptic.

    96) Canada plans to reduce emissions by 20 percent compared with 2006 levels by 2020, representing approximately a 3 percent cut from 1990 levels but it simultaneously defends its Alberta tar sands emissions and its record as one of the world’s highest per-capita emissions setters.

    97) India plans to reduce the ratio of emissions to production by 20-25 percent compared with 2005 levels by 2020, but all Government officials insist that since India has to grow for its development and poverty alleviation, it has to emit, because the economy is driven by carbon.

    98) The Leipzig Declaration in 1996, was signed by 110 scientists who said: “We – along with many of our fellow citizens – are apprehensive about the climate treaty conference scheduled for Kyoto, Japan, in December 1997” and “based on all the evidence available to us, we cannot subscribe to the politically inspired world view that envisages climate catastrophes and calls for hasty actions.”

    99) A US Oregon Petition Project stated “We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind. There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of CO2, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.”

    100) A report by the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change concluded “We find no support for the IPCC’s claim that climate observations during the twentieth century are either unprecedented or provide evidence of an anthropogenic effect on climate.”
