Turkson, who heads the pontifical council for justice and peace, said global challenges elevated by Francis – such as climate change and justice – would still take second place in importance to individual life-and-death issues such as abortion and the death penalty.

“I would not put them on the same level. I would not associate them at all. Climate change is something that has happened to the world around us,” he told a small group of reporters in a telephone interview. “It’s something essentially that we can control, we can rein in, whose impacts and consequences we can master.”…

After Promoting ‘Major’ Leftist Event, WashPost Avoids Numbers as DC Climate Change Rally Fizzles

UPDATE: Juliet Eilperin did write a followup story based on the fizzled numbers best described as “oops”:

The faith-based climate rally that took place Thursday in Washington drew a much smaller crowd than anticipated, though organizers say they still managed to convey their message.

The Moral Action on Climate Justice network, which worked with the Earth Day Network, League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club. Friends of of the Earth and other groups to organize the event, originally asked the National Park Service for a permit for 50,000 attendees. But Park Service countered the permit should be closer to 200,000, organizers said, given the popularity of Pope Francis.

In the end, according to several observers, the overall attendance was closer to 2,000. Think Progress — which is published by the liberal think tank Center for American Progress — estimated there were “hundreds of activists” on the Mall for the event, which started early Friday.

Um… Methinks Center for American Progress is much closer to the sad truth with an estimate of hundreds. Nothing close to hundreds of thousands predicted in August.

Pope Francis to the UN: environmental degradation threatens ‘the very existence of the human species’

But speaking to the United Nations General Assembly Friday, Francis transformed into an international policy, law, and development wonk – and above all, the spirited author of “Laudato Si” (“Praised Be”), his stirring encyclical on the environment.

“The ecological crisis, and the large-scale destruction of biodiversity, can threaten the very existence of the human species,” Francis said. “The baneful consequences of an irresponsible mismanagement of the global economy, guided only by ambition for wealth and power, must serve as a summons to a forthright reflection on man.”…

UK Sun newspaper: Pope Francis committing ‘Holy Wrong’ – ‘He has no business banging on about climate change’ – ‘Stick to religion, Your Holiness’

The UK Sun newspaper has taken a strong stand on Pope Francis’ foray into climate science. The Paper editorializes that he is committing a “holy wrong.”

The Sun declares the Pontiff has “no business banging on about climate change.” “That has nothing to do with faith. It’s about science and provable facts. That science is disputed, some of it discredited. the Pope’s believe in it is irrelevant,” the editorial added .

“Stick to religion, Your Holiness,” the paper concluded.

The Sun Says:

‘Holy wrong’

The Pope makes valuable contributions on religious matter. But he has no business banging on about climate change.

That has nothing to do with faith. It’s about science and provable facts. That science is disputed, some of it discredited. the Pope’s believe in it is irrelevant.

Stick to religion, Your Holiness.

“There is a debate about what to do about climate change, and it generally falls on political lines,” Christy continued. “Those, who like me, do not see any advantage to eliminating these carbon emissions, because they’re not going to affect the climate much, we know that; and those who control of the human society, through controlling energy by reducing carbon emissions. That’s a different view of society than people who want to see energy available for people, especially the poorest among us.”…

The Vatican official who wrote the first draft of the papal encyclical has said abortion and the death penalty still hold primacy over climate change as issues for the Catholic church, despite the pope’s ringing call for action on the environment.

As the pope moved on to New York for the second leg of his US tour, Cardinal Peter Turkson said personal issues of life and death still came first for the church, notwithstanding the Catholic leader’s efforts to get world leaders to fight climate change and poverty.

Personal issues such as abortion remained in a category of their own. “Abortion, death penalty are, however, our religion,” he said. “Because God created humans in his image, the only thing he ever created in his way, the only blueprint.”…
