Now Europe comes for the Sunday roast: Brussels to impose maximum power limit on all new gas and electric ovens from next month
EU will introduce new energy efficiency requirements for ovens and hobs
Existing models will still be sold, but new design gradually introduced
Officials in Brussels say it will cut waste and improve value for money
But critics fear it will take longer to warm up ovens to cook Sunday roast

Tepid coffee anyone? Europe rules percolators must shut off after five minutes

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/shopping-and-consumer-news/11320629/Tepid-coffee-anyone-Europe-rules-percolators-must-shut-off-after-five-minutes.html

The new rules are part of the EU’s Ecodesign initiative, which have already seen the most powerful vacuum cleaners, and traditional light bulbs banned… “Coffee is one of the many products threatened by climate change, so it’s also good to know that when you’re making a cup, you’re doing your bit to cut down on carbon emissions too.
“With a better designed appliance you can enjoy a coffee without the bitter taste of wasting energy or adding unnecessarily to the climate problem.”

In an attempt to improve energy efficiency filter coffee machines must now switch off after five minutes of percolating to prevent electricty waste.
The European Commission claims that its new rules, which are intended to help tackle climate change, will not affect consumers as most filter machines have insulated jugs which keep coffee warm.
However those hoping for a piping pot may have to start keeping an eye on their brew if they are to still achieve the perfect cup. Espresso machines must also now power down after 30 minutes and functions keeping cups warm will end after 60 minutes. The new rules which came into force on January 1 mean that many more gadgets and appliances must automatically switch off to save energy.
New networked devices like routers, hubs, modems, connected or smart televisions and printers should be able to switch automatically into a low power standby mode if no main task is performed. …

MIT Climate Scientist Dr. Richard Lindzen on EU’s climate deal: EU ‘harnessing the hysteria over speculative global warming in the service of economic suicide’

Special To Climate Depot

Richard Lindzen – Professor Emeritus, MIT, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Cato Institute

October 25, 2014

“This year is the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I: a war where Europe demonstrated its capacity to harness hysteria in the service of suicide.  It is only fitting that the EU is celebrating this anniversary by harnessing the hysteria over speculative global warming (a phenomenon that has actually been hiding for 18 years), in the service of economic suicide by calling for a roll back of the industrial era despite the clear evidence that such action will serve to increase unemployment, ruin competitiveness and increase poverty.

Europeans commonly argue that the EU has preserved peace on the continent (ignoring the fact that they have depended on the US for defense during the Cold War).  However, even if this were correct, it is clear that the EU has done nothing to curb Europeans’ suicidal instincts.  Indeed, it appears to be abetting them.  Fortunately, this time Europe has included escape clauses whereby any nation is free to ignore its siren call.  However, the instinct remains their ideal.”

EU agrees on ludicrous 40% 2030 emissions reduction target

In the great tradition of countless IPCC climate conferences – at a time EU economies are in deep doldrums – while global temperature has not risen in 18 years – and at a time when Germany electricity generators are increasing coal use – and when France says it will cut back on electricity from nuclear generation – and when the shortcomings of wind & solar inducing extra risks to power grids are increasingly becoming obvious to anybody with normal reasoning powers – the EU twists arms to produce this agreement on a distant fantasy. And major political parties wonder why they are losing support. Emissions data from – Data from BP Statistical Review of World Energy
