New paper “changes fundamental understanding of how greenhouse warming comes about”

Today’s settled science update: A new paper published in PNAS on the greenhouse effect allegedly “changes the fundamental understanding of how greenhouse warming comes about.” Pardon? The paper attributes a role to increased CO2 only during the first couple decades to “start the process,” after which “global energy accumulation is primarily caused by an increase in absorbed solar radiation rather than reduced outgoing longwave radiation” [from greenhouse gases]. However, observations show that outgoing longwave infrared radiation [OLR] has increased over the past 62 years, not decreased as predicted by AGW theory: Source: Dr. van Andel: There is no observational evidence for influence of CO2 on present or past climate However, the only way the Earth can warm is by decreasing outgoing longwave infrared radiation in relation to incoming energy from shortwave solar radiation, changing the radiative balance. In addition, any such radiative imbalance in the troposphere would be counteracted by the dominant negative-feedback cooling from convection. The thermodynamics of convection, evaporation, adiabatic lapse rate/pressure/atmospheric mass/gravity dominate the troposphere and “short-circuit” most of the radiative imbalance as shown in fig 4 of this paper describing radiative-convective equilibrium in planetary atmospheres:Source: http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/~rlorenz/convection.pdfalso subsequently demonstrated by a paper in Nature by Robinson & Catling to apply to all planets with thick atmospheres in our solar system [one of several posts describing the Robinson & Catling paper]Convection dominates over radiative forcing in the troposphere until the atmosphere becomes too thin to sustain convection at P=0.1 bar, i.e. where the tropopause begins and radiative forcing takes over. Above the troposphere, CO2 is well-known to be a cooling, not warming, agent. The real 33C atmospheric greenhouse effect is instead entirely explainable on the basis of atmospheric mass/gravity/heat capacity/adiabatic lapse rate, and the “ocean greenhouse effect” explainable on the basis of the ~0.76 – 0.89 far-IR emissivity of the oceans, which “traps” heat from solar radiation in the oceans. Related: Why global warming is also not explained by a change in “effective radiating level” Study suggests shortwave absorption may rise Reportingclimatescience.com “New research suggests global warming is not just a blanket – in the long run, it’s more like tanning oil. Climate models forced with CO2 reveal that global energy accumulation is primarily caused by an increase in absorbed solar radiation rather than reduced outgoing longwave radiation.” by Hannah Hickey, University of Washington While computer …

No proof walrus are “struggling from the loss of sea ice” as new Earthjustice lawsuit claims

http://polarbearscience.com/2014/11/10/no-proof-walrus-are-struggling-from-the-loss-of-sea-ice-as-new-earthjustice-lawsuit-claims

A new day, a new lawsuit by environmentalists: this time, the species-on-a-pedestal is the same population of Chukchi Sea walrus that generated a news frenzy last month, which apparently still has legs. Courtesy Alaska Dispatch News (“Environmentalists sue feds to protect Pacific walruses from oil drilling” 10 November 2014): “Environmental groups on Monday sued the federal government over a rule that would allow Arctic oil exploration in areas that could hurt Pacific walruses, which already are struggling from the loss of sea ice. Earthjustice brought the suit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on behalf of a coalition of conservation groups that have long been opposed to Arctic drilling.” … “The groups also are challenging the agency’s environmental assessment and “finding of no significant impact.” The suit asserts the Fish and Wildlife Service failed to properly consider travel corridors between haulouts and the shoal and arbitrarily concluded that any impacts were properly mitigated. Earthjustice is bringing the suit on behalf of the Alaska Wilderness League, Center for Biological Diversity, Greenpeace, Resisting Environmental Destruction on Indigenous Lands, Sierra Club and by the Natural Resources Defense Council.” [my bold] Read the whole report here. Watch my short video refuting the claims that female walrus with calves only haul out on land when there is no ice available and that this phenomenon has only occurred since 2007, copied below (the briefing paper it summarizes is here). Far from “struggling from the loss of sea ice” it appears Chukchi Sea walrus numbers are higher than they have been in decades, with signs the population may be close to the carrying capacity of its habitat. And if you missed it, have a look at “Where have all the walrus gone?” for a rare discussion of what happened to the walrus herd a few days after the much publicized late September 2014 event.
