Interviewed on the Catholic network, EWTN, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) climate expert Carol Andress is asked about the 18 year ‘pause in global warming’ by host Raymond Arroyo.
Arroyo: ‘Carol, some groups say the 2013 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, that they failed to recognize this pause in global warming. Is that an issue? Do they have a point? Andress: ‘I can’t speak to that, I, the, yeh, uhh…’
Arroyo: ‘You can’t speak to that?’
Andress: ‘I can’t speak to that particular IPCC, uh…’
Arroyo: ‘Anomoly?’
Andress: ‘…anomoly. Uh, the, I mean the fact is, you know, eh, the, uh, this is pretty basic physics, uh, what were talking about in terms of the gasses, uh, and the effect that they have on trapping heat, uh, the, eh, uh, it’s, an we, you know, the fact is, it’s common sense that if we’re going to be throwing at, be, if we’re going to be burning, eh, and putting unlimited pollution into the air, that eventually it’s going to have an impact.’

Morano: I can speak to that. And there has been according to the satellite data, 18 years 5 months currently with no global warming. If you look back at the ensemble of climate models out of 117 — 114 models over predicted warming — predicted warming that did not occur. So the models have been failing.
Morano: In terms of the simple settled physics. we have had ice ages with CO2 five times higher than today. The geologic history of the earth contradicts these claims. Major UN scientists have not turned against the organization. Dr. Richard Tol, a lead UN author did a study and found the alleged 97% ‘consensus’ was pulled out of thin air.
Andress: Look, scientists are more certain about the human contribution to climate change than they are that smoking causes cancer. Now, are there still people who will maintain that smoking does not cause cancer? Sure, you can find those skeptics, they exist.

Morano: It’s offensive for her to mention tobacco. CO2 is a gas of life. It is not a pollutant under any definition of pollution. Let’s get that straight. And the United Nations and the IPCC scientists promoting this are handpicked by governments and the head of the UN climate panel had said they are at the back and call of governments. And what do those governments want? They have an agenda. They openly say they want to redistribute wealth by climate policy. So they are using the science as a partisan political campaign effort for centralized government planning through the United Nations. It’s a self enrichment tool, self-interest tool and a way they can be in charge of the developing world’s development.

EWTN, America’s leading cable network for Catholics broadcast to 148 millions homes around the world, hosted a debate Thursday night about Pope Francis’ plan to insert himself into the center of the global climate debate on “The World Over with Raymond Arroyo.” The debate featured Marc Morano, executive editor and chief correspondent ofClimateDepot.com, versus Carol Andress, director of legislative operations for the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).

Before we get to the video of the debate (embedded below) some set-up and commentary.
EWTN covered The Heartland Institute’s trip to Rome last month — which was an attempt to bring balance to the alarmism, flawed climate science, and wrong-headed agenda for the world’s poor the United Nations was presenting to the Vatican at its April 28 climate summit. EWTN reached out to Heartland this week asking for a DC-based member of the contingent we brought to Rome to talk about climate change and the Pope. Morano was my first choice to debate climate with the EDF, and he did not disappoint.
It is impossible to overstate what a blow-out this debate was for Morano. He was the Harlem Globetrotters to the EDF’s Washington Generals. The only things missing were the bucket of confetti trick and a dribbling exhibition by Curly Neal.
Bottom line: Morano brought the facts — relentlessly and firmly. Andress was criminally uninformed for someone in her position. She spent so much time stammering, everyone who is a part of EDF or supports it should be embarrassed.
A preview of one of many “money” moments for Morano: Andress admitting she couldn’t “speak to” why the latest report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Cliamte Change (IPCC) could not explain “the pause” in global warming that (so far) has stretched for 18 years and 4 months. Andress was obviously flustered by that question from Arroyo, and stammered out a litany of non-responsive talking points. Morano followed up by directly addressing the question with a torrent of specific facts.
This one-sided debate revealed a couple of things that should be troubling if you are supporter of the environmental left:
1. The people at the highest levels of your movement are wholly ignorant of basic facts about the earth’s climate.
Andress started out spewing stale, rote talking points about how “the science is settled,” and how you don’t have to be a scientist to see that we are now experiencing “weather on steroids.” Americans are experiencing more severe storms than ever before, she said, and it’s because of human CO2 emissions.
Morano countered those falsehoods with facts: Every day that passes sets a new recordfor a major hurricane failing to hit the mainland of the United States (category 3 or greater). The number of tornadoes swirling across the US are also at all-time lows.
Does Andress know these facts? Does she even care? Or does Andress think the public will ignore these facts if she and her allies in the movement repeat the alarmist talking points often enough? Does she not even realize the position she is defending is demonstrably false?
I think this is the answer: Most of the folks in the climate alarmism business are are so arrogant — so dismissive of “deniers” — they are not cognizant of their staggering ignorance of the actual science the “deniers” present to destroy their false talking points to a debate audience. Climate alarmists are so invested in the doctrine that human activity is causing a climate crisis that it never occurs to them to do the basic research necessary to defend their position.
That is why Andress stammered out cliches. She just doesn’t know any better than to mouth worn-out and unpersuasive talking points that do not stand up to Morano’s data about what is actually happening to the earth’s climate.
2. The people at the highest levels of your movement are taking in millions of dollars … but getting their butts kicked on the science and policy in debates on national television.
Carol Andress holds a senior position at an enormously influential and lavishly funded organization. The EDF’s website lists Andress’ areas of expertise as: “Climate Change, U.S. Congress, air quality, U.S. climate policy.” She sure didn’t show it on EWTN Thursday night. According to EDF’s 2013 990 form, the organization held $208 million in assets at the end of 2012 … and, yet, Andress’ embarassing performance was the best they could offer to EWTN.
Let’s put that into perspective. EDF is just one organization among an army of wealthy nonprofits (Sierra Club, Greenpeace, NRDC, etc.) agitating for climate alarmism. It raised and spent in just 2012 much more than what The Heartland Institute has raised and spent for all its programs since its founding in 1984. (Heartland is a broad, multi-issue, free-market think tank; we don’t just do climate.) You can see Heartland’s 2013 990 formhere. (NOTE: We’ve done well the last couple of years, but we have raised and spentmuch less than $5 million annually for most of our 31 years. Environmental donors might want to compare bang for the buck on that one.)

This is a rigged, three sided FAKE debate and two sides are WRONG.

To All Intelligent People:
Having just watched one of the most rambling and obtuse displays that I have ever seen since I was in elementary school given by a haphazard and spasmodic Carol Andress, in trying to defend an indefensible vacuous argument for Anthropogenic Global Warming, I just couldn’t let it go without some extra elucidation beyond that given competently and lucidly by Mr. Morano.
Ms. Andress, it is clear you have no facts or knowledge of anything about the fallacious Anthropogenic Global Warming hysteria. Firstly, lets correct your ignorance about your CO2 facts. You stated that Man injects more CO2 than Nature, well, as a point of science that you think that is settled as a source of AGW, you couldn’t be more wrong than claiming that cigarettes have no negative health effects, or Monsanto claiming that genetically modified food has no negative effects on humans. Facts are these, C02 comprises 4% of Earth’s air, and out of this 4%, only 3.75% of that CO2 is supplied by Man-made causes, read here <a href="http://www.atmos-chem-phys.net/14/7273/2014/acp-14-7273-2014.html", CO2 contribution by man 3.75%. That means 0.15% of the entire atmosphere can be attributed to Man made C02 over the entire history of civilization. And considering only 0.5% of this is added every year, we have an increase that is less than 0.001% of CO2 due to Man into the atmosphere every year. That means at present rates, it will take 100 years for Man’s contribution to CO2 to increase in the atmosphere another 1/10th of a percent. Mrs. Andress, you obviously don’t understand science or even elementary school mathematics. Such idiotic incompetence on your part, betrays how false and how disingenuous people like you are, and why societies are truly in danger; from liars, charlatans and thieves like yourself.
I have commented this elsewhere but I will do it here again, using the Pope as support for your AGW argument is akin to having a thief going to ask Ali Baba to look after everybody’s bullion. I am sure Ali Baba and his 40 thieves will be very willing, just like the Pope would be to defend AGW and the Governments that support it. Why? Take a good look were the Catholic Church gets most of its funding. Its been a long time – before the Second World War – that the CC made most of its funds from Sunday Mass. Today, thanks to the corrupt governments we have, these governments (mainly European) have a nice little deal with the CC. In Europe, people are forced every year on their tax returns to pay a tax to charity (ask Germans and Italians how odious this tax is!). Normally your allowed to choose your charity, but most don’t, and so, the default institution is, you guessed it, the Catholic Church. The Pope you see, has a vested interest in keeping the dishonest governments happy. After all, priests and archbishops need to drive BMW’s and Merc’s too, not to mention fund their lavish abodes. You really think that Pope Francis lives like a pauper?
An interesting side story of how corrupt the Church is. When I was a little boy, my priest at the local Catholic Church told me that the doors of the church will always be open, and you can come to pray or for help at any time, night or day (this was when I was living in Australia). Today, tell me where you can find a church anywhere where they are open 24 hours a day? I remember when my grandmother died, I went to a local Catholic Church (I was in Canada now). I found the doors closed, so I went around back to ask the Father if I could go inside and pray, he told me, I still remember these words clearly, “Come back Sunday, we are closed now.” I replied, “But I promised to my grandmother that would pray for her soul and light a candle for her on the day she died.” The priest replied, “Business hours are on the door of the Church. Besides your grandmother will still be dead on Sunday.” Honest to God, that is what he said. I walked across town, some 10 kilometers to a Seven Day Adventists Church – i think it was them its so long ago now I don’t remember all that well on that point- that day, just so I could light a candle (The reason I walked is because I was damn angry and needed to walk off the anger, admittedly, I cursed that damn Catholic Church and Priest every step of the way). You really think the Catholic Church gives a damn about Global Warming? For the record, the Catholic Church in question here, was a brand spanking new and huge one, this was in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. Churches today are run like a business, and are open only during business hours, namely, a few hours on Sunday and maybe on some other days.
So we come to the last point. Ms. Andress if you really do care about the environment and all that stuff, why don’t you really get to the heart of the problem? Namely, it isn’t that we Humans dump too much pollutants into the air or water, which in many countries they are so underdeveloped that is all they can do. What we really need to do is stop this incessant unplanned and unmanageable growth. The developed countries like Europe and USA have been artificially juicing their economies by keeping the populations growing even though, natural fertility rates have gone in the negative (namely, shrinking populations). If you want cleaner environments, then stop this incessant growth that can’t be supported. Look at California, it has reached its carrying capacity, water and food wise, but its population is still growing. The problem is not CO2, or fossil fuels. The real problem is that governments are super juicing the economies with bad policies, and are not prepared to do what populations are saying with their pockets, STOP. No more people, time to cut our economies. You do that, all the problems you say we have will start immediately to diminish. But you will not hear the Governments or the Catholic Church say anything to support that argument. So where are your real priorities Ms. Andress? It appears, your ineptitude in math and learning the facts is out done by your hypocrisy.
The problem we have today, is not AGW. It is corrupt Governments. Governments and their acolytes, The Patrician Class, whom refuse to do what is really necessary for our societies and world. Once again its the elites of society that are causing ruination to our economies. As it always happens, as it has happened before over thousands of years, society will slowly wend its way into ruin. Another Dark Ages will follow, then a Revolution, and once after all the beheadings have been done (alla French Revolution), we will start the climb back up again the social and economic ladders. The question that I posit it here is, does Humanity really have to go through this again? Forget about the history books, for we have thousands of history books that have written about this many times, nobody if they do really read them, does really care. For we always repeat our crimes.
The stupid, the dishonest, the incompetent, always get the power and control, especially no more so, than for governments. Social Entropy is at play, when too many worthless unproductive bums rise to the top, the top gets too heavy for the rest of the economic system to support them, and then it all collapses. And that’s where we are, when people like that stupid women, who’s head of the IMF, can work without paying any taxes at all, how do you think the economic system is going to go? Our leaders are supposed to show leadership and set examples. When Lagarde can go trolling around the world and not pay a cent in taxes, how can you expect the people of Greece to pay taxes when she doesn’t pay one cent of them herself? Social Entropy, is at play.
What can you say when the world is run by stupid, selfish people like Andress and Lagarde? I guess these women would say, “Let them eat cake.” So how does one build a guillotine?
