I’ve been watching the 10-day GFS forecast for the U.S., and each run is reinforcing the previous one, with a major cold air outbreak for most of the U.S. late next week:

I’m reminded of when I started the graduate program in meteorology at UW-Madison in the fall of 1978. We were getting an unusual string of cold fronts which all the professors were claiming could not last. Eventually, warmer Pacific air would come in from the west…it always does.

Except during winter ’78-’79…it didn’t. The cold air just kept coming.

I’m not making a winter forecast here…just reminiscing. But I will say that I’ve been watching the model forecasts nearly every day for decades (since I’m co-developer of WeatherStreet.com, and still a weather weenie at heart), and for many years the model forecast tendency has been to over-forecast these cold air outbreaks.
The model would predict a cold front coming through our neck of the woods (N. Alabama) 5-7 days in advance…but the front would almost never make it, or it would not plunge as far south (or be as cold) as originally forecast.

But this model error tendency seems to have changed in the last couple years, with that cold air not only making it, but reaching the Gulf coast and beyond. This has been a record cold summer in Alabama, and we had cool fronts pass through regularly all summer long. I don’t recall that ever happening in the 30 years we have lived here. The lawn stayed spring-green all summer, when usually we have to work to keep it alive.

Maybe my friend Joe Bastardi will chime in and say whether he has seen a similar change in the model error in recent years.

At least we can be thankful that when the cold air does arrive, it will be slightly warmer than it would have been without global warming. Ha-ha.

          As for your “extreme weather”, where exactly is it? What ever happened to all the big hurricanes we were supposed to have you moron? Even the latest IPCC report said that their modeling way over estimated the amount of warming, and that they had to rework their models to reflect that.
          The most hilarious part of what you believe is that it is almost solely based on statistical analysis and computer modeling. Modeling which has been fed “what if” numbers to produce the desired results. That’s not science, that’s BS.
          As for your “climate change” mantra; first you guys called it global warming. Then you caled it anthropogenic global warming. Now you call it “climate change”? I’ve got a news flash for you genius. The climate here on earth has been changing since the planet formed, and it has done so more radically since before mankind was even a minor consideration! When there are less or more hurricanes during the year it’s, “man-made climate change”. The fact that the poles are experiencing their coldest period in decades, means that that fact is totally ignored because it refutes “man-made global warming”. “Scientific models” specifically designed to support unfounded and baseless claims is “proof” that “man-made climate change” is “real”.     1. I’m in MIddle Tennessee. In fact, I’m near Al Gore’s neighborhood. We had zero days of temperatures in hundreds. It was the coolest summer I can remember. Our humidity was lower in fact than usual. Sure Old Al was trying to come up with some other lie to justify his ‘climate changes’ rubbish.

    2. Presently, in Middle Tennessee the temperature is 54 degrees and the wind is cold and blowing hard. Our top temperature for the day is forecast to be 61 degrees. The trees are still green and rain is predicted.

  52. I’ll never forget the winter of 78/79. Jimmy Carter had mandated that the thermostats of commercial and government buildings weren’t to go over 65. My parents owned and operated a funeral home in which we lived in as well. My dad tried to get a waver since we lived in our business, but was denied. This was a three story house and we froze! I remember wearing long johns and booties our neighbor knit for me and being cold all the time. The city turned off the street lights at night so my parents had to buy a generator to run them during Calling Hours. That was one long winter.

      1. They knew by our bill and we used oil, so the city council knew roughly how much we would need to run at 65. The city council are the ones who denied our waver.

        1. I have no problem with energy conservation, but that’s just ridiculous, and way too intrusive, the government should not be looking at anyone’s bills.

I’d really be interested in talking or emailing with the forecaster because, I’ve done study on climate since the 70s, predicted the global warming cycle to the exact year when all were yelling Ice Age and then turned around and predicted the new 30 year average trend of global cooling to exact year which by chance was this year and scientists or at least 33 thousand of them state it started in March so I expect in 3-5 years the public will see the Arctic ice build up way past those 79 averages and warmest will be shocked but new snow and ice melts faster so this will take 3-5 years to be noticed from Space and that picture to come will tell the story and put an end to the bull of global warming when we actually have normal phases like change of seasons. I do a winter forecast each year Thanksgiving week that is my official one and I am NOT a meteorologist but have 80% accuracy which is pretty darn high and that PDO is negative of course and went so early on helping me zero down to 2013 the cooling considering the Sun and earth wobble controls nearly 100% of our climate. It is about 97% with above ground and under Ocean volcanoes and other natural things causing the rest with humans only causing a City Heat Island Effect and pollution but not climate change. Cows do more for that than humans if you want to go with greenhouse gases but those will drop soon because global cooling means upper atmosphere water vapor will dry and those gasses either evaporate or fall back to our salty Oceans to be cleansed as always while in global warming phases, water vapor increases and causes a blanket effect and traps those gases so it means nothing really other than we are killing ourselves with pollution but not changing the climate.

    This is no official winter forecast as of yet but so far; I see similarities of this year and the winter of 83-84. Back in 83 we had record low hurricane activity which was lowest in more than 50 years from memory but forget exact figure and here in eastern TN it was frozen at Christmas that year with snow on the ground and of course, the mountains were covered in snow. I was in Miami the year it snowed there and was at school and already interested in climate and there it was snowing a little that morning. I believe West Palm Beach got a cover of snow unlike Miami but all 50 States had snow including of course Hawaii which gets snow each year btw on that one mountain which if memory is right is the wettest place on earth.

    Will we get warmth from the West? Sure, there will be times of that but as we get two years down the road, that NAO is going to really trend negative along with AO and in global cooling like now, we get fewer El Nino’s and more La Nina’s or La-Nada winters while global warming phases is the opposite. I am still doing ground moisture date and need those last two weeks of October and first two of November to give a forecast set in stone so to speak but so far it looks really interesting to me so if you live in the SE where it has not been snowing much the last 30 years; you are going to get snow this winter. I do winter as December 21st to April 1st but I will forecast for D, J, F, M & A and yep, there will be a chance of an April snow in the TN Valley in 2014. One year many years ago before I was born and on the day my great uncle was born same BD as mine, it snowed in Chattanooga, TN yet I see no record of it however; the temps are recorded at the airport and downtown and means nothing for metro area since two years ago, it snow about 2″ at the airport and 15″ at my house not far from there so it depends on elevation here mile to mile. I will be moving up to Great Lakes soon and that is going to be fun but my storm chasing days are over.

    If ya’ll lol like a cold winter, I think you are going to be happy this coming winter as it looks like it will be cold nationwide to me so far.

The volunteer fire department filled the swimming pool parking lot with water from a hydrant so we could skate on the ice. Between making a ton of money in the morning shoveling people’s driveways so they could go to work, and playing hockey in that parking lot in the afternoons, that winter is among my fondest memories.
