No surprise here, as the October-November timeframe has broken all records for area covered by open water. The Arctic Ocean is in the process of refreezing, but the record exposed open water, even at this late date, provides moisture availability for snow deposition on Greenland and land areas of Northern Siberia. As a result Northern China has experienced a record cold October, and a fair amount of early snow, its albedo essentially cooling the northern hemisphere. The snow this past week in the US northern tier, is a direct consequence of that cooling.
It’s going to be an interesting winter, and that includes England and northern Europe too!!!

The surface mass balance is not the whole story. It only includes what’s
happening at the surface: snowfall and rainfall vs. sublimation,
runoff, etc. It doesn’t include iceberg calving or submarine melting.
Surface mass balance has to be a very positive number over the course of
a year in order to balance out these other effects.
