Fresh on the heels of the recent news surrounding the increasingly dire climate forecast for our planet, comes a possible warning from the cosmos: climate change in extraterrestrial environments is inevitable and, should life on hypothetically habitable worlds not act as a stabilizer for their environments, it serves as a “sell-by” date for all burgeoning lifeforms.
In new research published in the journal Astrobiology, astronomers of The Australian National University (ANU) pondered this scenario and realized that young habitable planets can become unstable very quickly. What once was a life-giving oasis becomes a hellish hothouse or frozen wasteland very quickly.
“The universe is probably filled with habitable planets, so many scientists think it should be teeming with aliens,” said Aditya Chopra, lead author of the paper. “Early life is fragile, so we believe it rarely evolves quickly enough to survive.”
“Most early planetary environments are unstable. To produce a habitable planet, life forms need to regulate greenhouse gases such as water and carbon dioxide to keep surface temperatures stable,” he said.
Unlike Earth, most worlds will likely not find this balance, ultimately succumbing to being cooked by a runaway greenhouse effect (like Venus) or frozen by a thinning atmosphere (like Mars). Life will often not be fortunate enough to win the race against environmental fluctuations to become a stabilizing factor.
Earth, which already has the stunning fortune to exist at just the right spot around a stable star, spawned life and that life had a role to play in stabilizing its atmosphere as it evolved over that last 4 billion years.
“Life on Earth probably played a leading role in stabilizing the planet’s climate,” said co-investigator Charley Lineweaver, also from ANU.
And this could be why we’re not finding a galaxy filled with alien life — just because there’s a habitable world out there, it doesn’t mean it’s suitable for life for long. It’s yet another hurdle against life from gaining a foothold.
“The mystery of why we haven’t yet found signs of aliens may have less to do with the likelihood of the origin of life or intelligence and have more to do with the rarity of the rapid emergence of biological regulation of feedback cycles on planetary surfaces,” said Chopra.

For now, this is all speculation, but what’s clear from observations of our own planet, is that the mother of all existential self-inflicted bottlenecks is on the horizon and, unless we find a way of reversing the damage we’ve caused to our environment, it seems we’ll quickly become just another lifeform that didn’t make the grade.

12,000 years ago, North America was under hundreds of feet of ice and sea levels were 350 lower than they are today. Without any help from humans it warmed up a whole bunch which allowed humans to thrive. What actually causes the Earth to get warmer and colder? The distance from the sun as it’s orbit changes.
Yes, it will get very cold again and there is nothing humans can do about it. It is pretty silly to believe humans can alter climate to any significant degree… Even if you believe the alarmists, they are talking about a sea rise of 4 to 12 feet at most and temperature increases of less than 10 degrees… that’s nothing. We will be happy to be starting from there when we go into the next ice age.

Oh, and a layer of iridium laid down across the continent (iridium is an asteroid indicator). So it’s more likely that an asteroid did that particular bit of damage. Possibly it hit a glacier-covered mountain in Alaska, vaporized the glacier (sending it ballistic to Siberia), and then vaporized in the face of a mountain, causing a fireball to consume most of the northern continent.

Wrote about this already in my books. The theory is that a dominant life form inevitably evolves to a level where it can overcome natural governors that otherwise control its population. This apex life form eventually must do one of two things: 1) Evolve its *spirit* to no longer need natural governors–and govern itself; that is to say, it no longer mindlessly and selfishly breeds but instead lives intentionally and voluntarily occupies its ecological niche and niche function, or 2) Destroy the entire planet.
This is a “group pass/fail test.” It is not merely the apex species, or even the individual offenders in that species that dies, but instead all of the members of that species plus the entire planet.
Put yet another way, there is a natural barrier to cross before the “Next Level” can be accessed. A planet seems to need to prove itself worthy before attaining the technologies and knowledge to go forth into the cosmos–for the planet to bear seeds. Like flowers, not all planets succeed in bearing seeds. Only the healthy ones make it.

There are several major drivers of climate, most outside of earth. Weather is driven by internal water temperatures and atmospheric events. But what really causes the internal changes? Try this: If human activity completely ceased for a 24 hour period, no heating, no emissions, no nothing, the earth would wake up tomorrow as though nothing happened. However, if the sun ceases activity for 24 hours, the earth becomes an ice cube and all life is dead the next day. Also if our spiral arms go through a dusty area of space as the galaxy rotates on it’s 500,000 year rotation through space and encounters a significantly higher region of dust, we could have a very quick ice age and massive death on earth. It were to rotate into a less dusty area, we could be bombarded by massive radioactive forces such as gamma rays that could kill most of life on earth. A supernova in our neighborhood (within 130 light years) would burn us to a cinder. The fact is, when you look at macro causes of climate change and compare it to human influence, the AGW is very minuscule. We have lots of geographical and atmospheric and biological hx to measure these macro events that have happened with some regularity in the past. At best, right now, we’ve got about 50,000 years of relatively peaceful macro space activity and then we’d better be gone. Internally, a massive volcanic blast which fills the atmosphere with dust is probably our greatest risk, but that is usually a short term event even if devastating. If through AGW (if true), ice melts and the oceans raise, it will cause some relocation but won’t be the end. A greater threat to man is political control over food and energy sources and deliberate self destruction from nuclear or biological warfare or mass starvation cause by political policies that leads to world wide violence and anarchy. Besides, the story is a lie, aliens are alive and well and I have two of them living in my house. They are called Chihuahuas and there is no record where they come from, they look unearthly with huge alien like eyes and they use their eyes to project mind control powers into human brains to make humans their slaves.

What probably happened to most intelligent societies has much more to do with nature than with their activities. Meteors could have destroyed life on some planets. Dying stars could have expanded to the point of destroying life on many habitable planets just as our sun will a few billion years from now. Gamma rays and other bizarre incidents can fry planets in our unstable universe, especially on planets closer to the center of galaxies.
