Peter Foster writes in the Financial Post: As the battle continues over the credibility of the latest summary of climate science from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, True Believers appear to be basing their talking points on a 1953 science fiction movie, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms. In the film, a carnivorous dinosaur is […]

IPCC Dogmatists Under Fire: Little Ice Age May Be Due To Changes In Solar Activity: Swiss scientists now say that the Little Ice Age most certainly could have been triggered by variations in solar activity’

IPCC Dogmatists Under Fire: Little Ice Age May Be Due To Changes In Solar Activity

http://www.thegwpf.org/ipcc-dogmatists-fire-ice-age-due-solar-activity/

Swiss scientists now say that the Little Ice Age most certainly could have been triggered by variations in solar activity.
There’s been criticism for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) over its latest AR5 report from many quarters for many reasons. But today there’s new research focusing on one particular aspect of that criticism.
The particular part of the IPCC’s science in question is its accounting for the effects of changes in the Sun on the climate of planet Earth. Many climatologists have long sought to suggest that the effects of solar variability are minor, certainly when compared to those of human-driven CO2 emissions. Others, however, while admitting that the Sun changes only a very little over human timescales, think that it might be an important factor.
This matters because solar physicists think that the Sun is about to enter a “grand minimum”, a prolonged period of low activity.
The current 11-year peak in solar action is the weakest seen for a long time, and it may presage a lengthy quiet period. Previously, historical records suggest that such periods have been accompanied by chilly conditions on Earth – perhaps to the point where a coming minimum might counteract or even render irrelevant humanity’s carbon emissions. The “Little Ice Age” seen from the 15th to the 19th centuries is often mentioned in this context.
There are certainly plenty of scientists to say, along with the IPCC, that this isn’t so. For instance climate physicist Joanna Haigh has this to say, in tinned quotes offered alongside the AR5 release by the UK’s Science Media Centre:
“Even if the Sun were to enter a new ‘grand minimum’ state within the next century, [solar variation] would be very unlikely to provide more than a small, temporary, partial compensation for likely anthropogenic warming.”
And yet the Little Ice Age appears to have affected the climate powerfully. IPCC-leaning scientists, however, say that the Little Ice Age couldn’t have been caused by solar variability – not even solar variability combined with sky-darkening volcanic eruptions – as the effects would have been too weak.
That school of science would often suggest that the Little Ice Age was actually caused by a sequence of unusually powerful North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) atmospheric phenomena – or, in other words, that it was just a …

Greens’ Unpopularity Is Turning People Away From Green Policies

http://www.thegwpf.org/greens-unpopularity-turning-people-green-policies/

People don’t like environmentalists, and that personal disdain is hurting the green cause. That’s the gist of a new study, which found that the stereotypes people hold about environmental activists make them much less likely to adopt the kinds of behaviors greens promote, such as recycling.

Pacific Standard reports:
In one [study], 140 Americans…read an article about climate change and “the need for individuals to adopt sustainable lifestyles.”
For one-third of the participants, the writer was described as a stereotypical environmentalist…. Another third were told he was an atypical, less-abrasive environmentalist…. For the final third, his profile did not mention environmental activism at all.
After reading the article, participants were asked whether it inspired them to do more recycling, or otherwise take more eco-friendly actions.
“Participants were less motivated to adopt pro-environmental behaviors when these behaviors were advocated by the ‘typical’ environmentalist, rather than by the ‘atypical’ environmentalist or the undefined target,” the researchers report.
Did you catch that? If the author was just described as an environmentalist, it made readers less likely to live “sustainably” than if the author was unidentified.
Our pointing out this story isn’t about directing snark at clueless greens. The truth is that the world needs smarter environmentalists—people who understand that mass migration to sustainable communes isn’t a viable solution, who understand that society isn’t about to voluntarily retreat to an 18th-century lifestyle or curtail economic growth. These environmentalists exist. Bjørn Lomborg, for one, has as solid a grasp of policy as he does of science.
The world deserves a smart green movement, capable of effectively advocating for sustainable development. It doesn’t have one, and that’s a shame.

I What Is Happening On The Sun?

What Is Happening On The Sun?

http://www.thegwpf.org/happening-sun/

What is happening on the sun? What will happen? Even the most lustrous minds in solar physics cannot answer that question.

Wholly Molly! The Royal Society of Belgium promptly published September’s current official monthly sunspot number on October 1st. It is really, REALLY low: 36.9!
NOAA, as usual, hasn’t reported yet.
We are supposed to be just after solar maximum activity. Yet it feels more like nearing the end of the cycle. Sunspot counts dropped dramatically from last month’s already pathetically low 66, which was up from the month before.
What is happening on the sun?
September’s Muddled Message
It is noteworthy that September’s southern hemisphere sunspot count (19.6) is barely above the northern count (17.3).
That would not amount to a hill of beans if not for the fact that northern hemisphere sunspot activity peaked way back in November 2011 at 96.7!
Solar physicists are still at odds over whether or not the southern hemisphere sunspot activity has peaked or not. 19.6 is a super low number.
Will southern sunspots peak or not? Or, will sunspots just peter off into never-never land?
That is the $580 trillion earth climate change question!
Sunspots and the IPCC
The IPCC came out with the meat and potatoes of its AR5 report a few days ago.
In it, once again, the impact of the sun – a variable star – on earth’s climate was minimized.
History tells us that the sun is the primary influence on earth’s climate. The end of the last major last ice age 11,000 years ago corresponded with outrageously high solar sunspot activity. The “little ice age” 400 years ago corresponds with the last period of super minimal sunspot activity known as theMaunder Minimum.
The first official prediction for the peak of the next solar cycle, Solar Cycle 25, is only 7!! That puts it in line with solar activity during the Maunder Minimum.
Conclusions
What is happening on the sun? What will happen?
Even the most lustrous minds in solar physics cannot answer that question.

Bummer: Shutdown might hinder policy-neutral IPCC members from talking to politicians about “formulating what new policies or approaches that might be dictated” by the IPCC report

Policy: Washington’s climate — hot rhetoric, cold comfort as a few good employees struggle on — Wednesday, October 2, 2013 — www.eenews.netThe shutdown comes at an especially inconvenient time for climate research; a number of scientists with NOAA were co-authors of the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which was released in full Monday (ClimateWire, Oct. 1).Since the shutdown, these experts are no longer available to help interpret the 2,000-page document for journalists or policymakers.”The scientists involved in that, by and large, will not be helpful to the administration or to Congress in terms of formulating what new policies or approaches that might be dictated by that information … which is very critical,” said Steven Murawski, formerly the chief scientist of the National Marine Fisheries Service under NOAA and now a professor of marine science at the University of South Florida. “Without scientific information, this becomes an exercise in belief rather than fact.”
