US CONGRESS TO INVESTIGATE NOAA’S TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENTS

The head of a congressional committee on science has issued subpoenas to the Obama administration over a recent scientific study refuting claims that global warming had “paused” or slowed over the last decade.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology and a prominent congressional skeptic on climate change, issued the subpoenas two weeks ago demanding e-mails and records from U.S. scientists who participated in the study, which undercut a popular argument used by critics who reject the scientific consensus that man-made pollution is behind the planet’s recent warming.

Smith’s document request to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ordered the agency to turn over scientific data as well as internal “communications between or among employees” involved in the study, according to a letter Friday by the House committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (Tex.).  Johnson accused Smith of “furthering a fishing expedition” by looking for ways to discredit NOAA’s study, which was published in June in the peer-reviewed journal Science.

“It is a disturbing trend for the legitimacy of this committee,” Johnson said in the letter to Smith. She linked the subpoena to previous requests by the committee’s Republican staff seeking information about NOAA’s climate researchers, which Johnson called “a serious misuse of Congressional oversight powers.” Noting that NOAA routinely publishes supporting data for its studies, Johnson said Smith had “not articulated a legitimate need for anything beyond what NOAA has already provided.”

Smith, responding to Johnson’s letter, said the subpoena was not “harassment” but “appropriate constitutional oversight.”

“This scandal-ridden administration’s lack of openness is the real problem,” Smith said in a statement released by his office. “Congress cannot do its job when agencies openly defy Congress and refuse to turn over information. When an agency decides to alter the way it has analyzed historical temperature data for the past few decades, it’s crucial to understand on what basis those decisions were made.”

It would be interesting to hear Dr. Karl of NCEI defend the decision to “adjust” up the data collected from purpose-built ocean measuring stations to make them more nearly agree with measurements taken by ships at sea using cooling water intake measurements or “buckets” and thermometers. The mind boggles!

    1. These “scientists” that are whining about the 0ne hundredth of a degree get government grants (i.e. taxpayer money) and usually large ones at that. Their flawed results have been used to push climate change legislation. Stopping the fraud is an utmost urgency. However, that said, I doubt a Congressional Investigation will do a damn thing. Haven’t they been investigating the IRS, Fast & Furious, Benghazzi (the list goes on) and to date: NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE.

  5. Adjusted data should not be official. They can do their what ifs and could be graphs all they want off the clock and post it as non official extrapolations if it makes them happy. Their job is to accurately gather and present the data, not follow some political agenda for personal gain.

      1. I’m writing of NOAA as an agency. Perhaps I came off as describing just the scientists.
        While it is undoubtedly true that they are under various methods of pressure and influence, the fact remains that if they are swayed as an agency to be inaccurate and unreliable then that agency is inaccurate and unreliable concerning the subject that was swayed.
        This does not mean that all or even most of the people doing the work are altering results, just someone or some group is before they are presented. I’d personally be upset if my work was skewed to the point of being misleading, but I’d have to weigh lying by omission vs paycheck. They shouldn’t be put in that position.

          The NASA fraud is the frequent adjustments to the historical thermometer record used to calculate some characterstic mean temperature while ignoring the satellite data that actually measures a mean temp.

  8. But the NOAA is the most credible group of government backed scientists – well, with the possible exception of the UN’s own IPCC scientists – that Big Al Gore says there is. The NOAA uses the term ‘homogenize’ when speaking of their data ‘adjustment’. The 18+ year hiatus in warming is a real inconvenient truth.

  12. Wish they’d stop using global warming and climate change to mean the same thing. They clearly are not. Yes, it might be warming up in some places but others are just getting downright cold. Climate change has been natural for mother earth. Not like this is the first time.

  14. I am a pilot. In the town where I live, we have an AWOS at our local airport. AWOS stands for Automated Weather Observing System. I usually check conditions at the airport, online, every morning before I drive to work. I then glance at our back porch thermometer and my car thermometer. I do all this because I’m a bit of a weather junkie, as many pilots are. Anyway, about three years ago, our AWOS was “updated” to a newer version. From that point to today, I consistently see temperatures about three degrees higher coming out of that AWOS than I do on my own thermometers. The eyes do not lie. The new system has been programmed with a bias toward reporting higher temperatures.

      I too have noticed the temps never seem to match what I have, and I only live 2 miles from my airport. Paine field WA state.

        1. With the chem trails that are being sprayed, temps are down, but since there is no ozone layer, more solar radiation is getting through. So, yes, the sun feels “hotter” here on earth (blame “glaciations/ice age”) but the “scientists” are counter-acting the effects.

          2. I sure would like to know what company has the contract to provide the Government the billions of tons aluminium oxide that would be needed to chem trail over every region of the US. Id buy stock in that company. ALCOA is about to go bankrupt so I find it hared to believe they provide it. And where are all the thousands of planes needed and the fuel to run those planes has to astronomical. Any rational person can sit at the airport and watch planes get supplies, fuel, etc. who do you think is putting chemicals in the plane to be distributed over America? Goblins?

                      Contrails that do turn to ice at high altitudes fall and warm as they get closer to earth. It’s usually melted by 26 k ft. half of the year in the US, so it should dissipate quickly. do you know the math on freefall speed and see how long it should take to melt and then sit and watch a couple hundred so it can sink in deep exactly how stupid you are.

All you need to be concerned about it strength and distance of the source. With that in mind you might consider avoiding certain electronic devices as they produce X-Rays. They won’t transition if chemtrails are filtering out the sun’s rays, but will if the sky is clear of chemtrails, like after a strong weather front clears the sky.

        4. I live near the Thomasville PA airport, a 5200 ft single runway and for the last year i have had an Advent 2090 on line here – weather underground KPAYORK45 if you want to look. I usually match or am a degree lower than Thomasville. I have compared my station with two others in the area and we pretty much agree. The funny thing on this, when the local weather prognosticators (or is it prevaricators) list Thomasville it is usually lower than anything else around by 1 – 5 degrees. There is a guy researching the stations and interestingly, many were properly sited 30 years ago and are not now. Thomasville is VERY CLOSE to perfect. Capital City on the west side of the river from Harrisburg was at one time but now there is an asphalt strop past it. This violates the siting. The research on the sites http://www.surfacestations.org/ shows that 64% of the sites read more than 2 degrees C high and 6 % more are 4 or more degrees high. I read the methodology on this and looked at the raw data he has. I looked for a flaw and can’t find one. The couple stations i can find locally support his work….

I would also guess that if one could find old printed temperature record books published in past decades, that their listed data might be different from what is cited in newer ones as “past temperatures.” I seem to recall East Anglia emails talking about that. (Fudging the data, and violating the Scientific Method, in both “past” and “current” data that was fed into the “models.”)

      2. The scientists who had downloaded the temp databases stumbled on the fact that the temps from the past were being systematically altered to lower temps with no explanation.
        Once NOAA got caught, they quietly changed the temps back again.

    5. It doesn’t take any type of programming it is simply a matter of where they place the temperature sensor. It has been known for years that some of the NOAA weather data is useless because they use sensors that are improperly located. I’ve have seen some that went from being placed in weather shed in an open field to being placed right beside asphalt highways and parking lots, either of which will substantially increase the temps they measure. The whole thing is a joke.

The reported and recorded high temps are here in Western Oregon are often about 10 degrees higher than my multiple home thermometers and car ambient air temp sensors when driving around the area. Yes, the article author scientist is trying to justify satellite data with global warming – the problem is that he can’t unless he ignores satellite data. That’s really the big issue. That’s also the problem with NOAA’s temperature “adjustment” to remove the plateau. NOAA is embarrassed by the plateau, so they remove it by manipulating thermometer data. Those that do use satellites show that global temperatures over the last twenty years show either a slight cooling or no change. NASA still uses old fashion earth based weather stations and then adds their “adjustments” to compensate for urban heat and other errors that would bias the result. However NASA has ten to twelve base stations that are so isolated from civilization that NASA does not use their adjustments at these sites. Everyone of these isolated sites have reported that temperatures are cooling not warming

    19. There was an 8 1/2 year study done in Germany comparing the old mercury/alcohol bulb thermometers to the newer electronic systems and they found the electronic systems averaged .93 degrees celcius higher temperatures than the old thermometers.

      1. And which ones were more accurate? One of the simplest tests is to put a thermometer in a bath of stable ice water. If it reads 32 F or 0 C, that’s a good start. Both the old and new AWOS’s use electronic thermometers, by the way.

If they gradually replace older systems over a period of several years, with new systems that have a positive 1.7 degree error built in, the composite data will look like the scary warming trend they keep trying to create.

      2. Yet at 4 remote weather stations in Peru they were able to “recalibrate” instruments 20 years after the fact and adjust measured data upward to get warmer temps. Some curious soul looked at the actual data recorded in the historical record and noticed the discrepancy with the reported data. When confronted those with some explaining to do gave the “we recalibrated instruments 20 years after the fact” excuse. So the same people who claim they can recalibrate instruments 20 years after the fact and adjust the data accordingly are now claiming they cannot adjust for recent KNOWN constant calibration errors. How dishonest is that?

The funny thing on this, when the local weather prognosticators (or is it prevaricators) list Thomasville it is usually lower than anything else around by 1 – 5 degrees. There is a guy researching the stations and interestingly, many were properly sited 30 years ago and are not now. Thomasville is VERY CLOSE to perfect. Capital City on the west side of the river from Harrisburg was at one time but now there is an asphalt strop past it. This violates the siting. The research on the sites http://www.surfacestations.org/ shows that 64% of the sites read more than 2 degrees C high and 6 % more are 4 or more degrees high. I read the methodology on this and looked at the raw data he has. I looked for a flaw and can’t find one. The couple stations i can find locally support his work….

This has created “heat islands” around major Metropolitan areas where concrete soaks up more of the suns rays and retains the heat. If you use that as the basis that temperature is increasing globally, the data itself is flawed from the start.   35. One more point, a few years ago on a whim I did that calculations for heating degree days. The information was all in my local newspaper. The calculation is pretty easy, take the high temp plus the low temp, divide by two and subtract 65. Another way would be to use hourly temps and divide by 24… I found that the degree days were often off by quite a bit. Sometimes correct but mostly several degrees less. Which suggested it was warmer then it really was. I recorded my data and sent ti to the paper. They didn’t publish my letter but within a week stopped publishing heating degree days…

A weather observer would read the temperature and dew point using those instruments. The instruments were in the container over a grassy area to preclude any influence on false readings.

Do a graph of 1920 to 1997 and one from 1999 to present. you will see 2 generally flat curves except those lines are 1.6 degrees apart. It is obvious they bumped the numbers in 1998 as well.     I have no idea whether we are heading into global warming, cooling or carrying on as usual. I do doubt that man is having any significant effect. I suspect the sun determines most of it. I believe the global warming social phenomena (which as I am defining it has nothing to do with weather, climate or the natural earth but is strictly a societal event) is a continuation or offshoot of the long standing popularity (100+ years) of attacking oil companies. Been going on as long as oil has been so valuable to society and has now morphed into more. As a human institution, the oil industry has done some bad things over its history but the bulk of the hate is just plain old envy that is then capitalized on by all sorts of factions.

    But if we are going to fear something it should be global cooling not warming. A global Ice Age would be disastrous. Even the relatively mild mini Ice Age from the 1400s to the 1800s had tremendous negative effects on society (and probably a few positives as well.) With approaching 7billion people even a mini Ice Age could be quite bad and a real Ice Age would probably bring on massive famine and perhaps a world war. That is what we should be monitoring and preparing for if anything.

Seems like somebody trimmed a few degrees off the High Temp number but forgot to “fix” the Record High Temp for that day.
    Same thing happens for what seems to have been a heat wave in late August and early September 1953. You can play around and find inconsistencies like this between “recorded” High Temps and “Record” High Temps but only for records set in the 90’s and before and the Record High is always higher than the Daily High supposedly recorded the same day. Looks like a temperature shaving scam to me.

    1. the justice system has been hopelessly perverted in terms of bringing criminal politicians to justice. The IRS/Lois Lerner/Preezy’s ‘not a smidgeon of corruption’ comment demonstrates this. The people, if they want justice, are going to need to find the balls to take in the street. Some people need to be tarred and feathered (at the least), and yes, some deserve to hang.

In a functional Republic, we’d have some charges filed, the case would go to court, and a jury of peers would reach a verdict. But the rule of law in the US is incrementally failing.     100 ppm is 1 part in 10,000. A 100 ppm raise in CO2 level is akin to adding 1 new molecule to every 10,000 Nitrogen, H2O, and other molecules in the atmosphere.   249. Yeah, the sad take away from all of this is: The government lies, so called scientists lie, big churches/religion buys into and repeats the lies, big business makes money from and therefore supports/continues the lies.
    They all want something and are willing to get it at the expense of everyday people. Our nation/society is seriously in decay when an employee of the federal government simply refuses to turn over records (that by law are the publics property) to congress. Yes, I know, this would describe the NOAA or Hillary Clinton. But this is how bad is has gotten.
    As far as I am concerned you can save time by hanging Clinton, Zuckerberg, this NOAA A$$hole et al on the same scaffolding at the same time.

  250. I am a meteorologist working with the federal gov’t. Since my career began nearly 25 years ago, the methods for measuring temperatures have constantly evolved as technology has advanced. There is no way that you can tell me that the various instruments that have been used to record temperatures over this period can produce temperature data that is consistent to within a degree…which is within the bounds of the “warming”. Also. “peer reviewed” no longer means much. It is widely known within the field of climatology that any research presented that contradicts the religion of AGW is automatically rejected and the scientist is black listed, career torpedoed.

  252. Global Cooling, I mean Global Warming, I mean Climate Disruption, I mean Climate Change is just another scheme by those in power to steal more wealth from people and implement more controls. The Climate is always changing but to assume we are a major factor is a little arrogant of us. Now, having said that, I can agree that it is our responsibility to clean up pollution, control where we build, and use our resources responsibly. When ever new tech comes out that is better and cleaner then before, we should implement it as soon as possible. When the system has become corrupted and people see it for what it is, they loose all credibility – this is why no one listens to Obama’s Administration anymore… They are worthless and not creditable now!

  254. New Zealand’s Kiwigate was exposed a few years ago. Unsupported temperature data adjustments creating an exaggerated warming trend that were challenged. The adjustments could not be produced in Court or explained. The scientist responsible for fudging the temperature data (who had been an IPCC author and closely linked to the UK’s Climatic Research Unit that was at the centre of the “climategate scandal”) was dismissed from his position. And that’s the problem… the culprits get dismissed but no government prosecutes these fraudsters. It will be the same in America. Meanwhile, people should view this video:
