‘Bring them to court’: Warmist scientist Alan Betts wants RICO prosecutions of climate change opponents

Betts, who founded Atmospheric Research in 1979 to inform the public about climate-related threats, said fossil fuel companies have known for decades their activities could increase global temperatures 3 to 5 degrees.

“They shifted from analyzing and understanding the problem from a scientific point of view to developing a strategy to cause doubt,” Betts said, adding that fossil fuel companies fund opposition to global warming regulations.…

The Lead Climate Scientist Behind the Obama/RICO Letter has Some Serious Questions to Answer

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/09/22/lead-climate-scientist-behind-obamarico-letter-serious-questions-answer/

So why, exactly was the letter to Obama sent from the IGES? Does its tax status not exclude it from such naked politicking?

Also, is it not the case that under Virginia law (Shukla teaches at George Mason University, remember) you cannot be employed elsewhere to do the same job? So perhaps he can explain how his work as professor of climate dynamics at GMU differs so markedly from his “scientific research on climate variability and climate predictability” at IGES that it entitles him to claim separate federal grant funding for the latter. If he can’t, then GMU might want him to ask him for its share of that $3.8 million in federal grants mentioned above. The university would be entitled to 50 per cent.…

‘Perp-walking the climate skeptics’: ‘A perp walk of PhDs.’ ‘Academic ayatollahs’ seek ‘a roundup of skeptical scientists’

Let’s call them the Shameless 20. There’s depressingly little media or academia outcry over their essentially fascist agenda.

Maybe this reflects the low status to which smug, lockstep liberalism has sunk in the muck of its own ideological catechism.

Beyond the ominous letter from the 20 is this ominous consideration:

President Obama may not need any goading to unkennel the doberman pinschers of the Department of Justice and other bureaucracies and turn them loose on scientists who question political orthodoxy on climate.

Obama has done more than any politician, excepting possibly Al Gore, to politicize a complex issue that’s still being researched and debated in scientific circles. Obama has falsely declared the issue of climate change “settled.”

He has perpetuated the urban myth that “97 percent” of scientists believe humans are the cause of global warming.

These academic ayatollahs aren’t joking. (Ayatollahs never are.)

Dr. Petr Chylek specializes in space and remote sensing sciences at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. He’s a fellow of the American Geophysical Union. And a skeptic. He says:

“It seems that some of the most prominent leaders of the climate research community, like prophets of old Israel, believe they can see the future of humankind and that the only remaining task is to convince or force others to accept and follow….” He adds:

“Let us admit that our understanding of climate is less perfect than we have tried to make the public believe.”…

Leading Climate Scientists Blast Letter By 20 Academics As “Naïve” …”Implied Coercion” Damages Field Of Science

Georgia Tech professor Judith Curry and geologist Dr. Sebastian Lüning.

First Prof. Curry’s comment:

I am astonished by the naiveté of these scientists, who are damaging their reputation by their naive meddling in a complex policy debate. They seem not to realize that the tables could easily be turned on them if the political winds change (say with the election of a Republican U.S. President), and the heat would then be turned on green advocacy groups and the scientists that engage with them. The science is sufficiently uncertain to allow several rational narratives for what has caused 20th century warming and how the 21st century climate will evolve. These 20 scientists damage not only their own reputations, but they also damage the public perception of scientists as trustworthy sources of information. Most seriously, the coercion of scientists implied by this letter will discourage objectivity in scientific research and will discourage scientists from entering/staying in the field of climate research.”

“Undemocratic and unprofessional”

Sebastian Lüning also finds the whole affair a bit odd and “unprofessional”. He wrote:

Rather than criminal lawsuits, we urgently need an objective “scientific court” where arguments of both IPCC and skeptic sides are technically and open-mindedly discussed. It is undemocratic and unprofessional to silence scientists by legally threatening them if they do not subscribe to the official interpretation / party line. There are many historic examples where science pioneers such as Galileo Galilee or Alfred Wegener would have ended up in prison.”

Finally Prof. Nicola Scafetta of Duke University also provided a short comment:

Let us hope that this evident politicization of science ends soon.”
