RicoGate expands: Another warmist scientist who signed letter revealed to get over $600,000 from taxpayers

Meanwhile, co-signatory  Mr Betts, from the bushwacks up in Vermont, feels that the letter did not go far enough. Well, they are a bit whacky up there!

Of course, Mr Betts has lots of good reasons for this, at the last count 606,100!

As his website states:

The most recent grant from the NSF, which remember is a Federal Agency, is this one:

The amount awarded of $606,100 appears to relate to the position as at June 2010, which would equate to an annual rate of about $120,000. Nice work if you can get it!

As he states, he has been the recipient of long term grants from the NSF for 30 years, for instance between 2000 and 2005:

He has also been funded by NASA amongst others. But interestingly he mentions the Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies, George Mason University. This is none other than COLA, part of Jagadish Shukla’s IGES group.

Now who would have imagined that? It’s a small world, isn’t it.

It is certainly strange to see many supporters of the Whitehouse approach suggest that the speech they dislike is actionable because they find in it half-truths, selectively marshaled data, scientific studies that spring from agendas, arguments whose ultimate sincerity is open to question, evasion of telling points made by the other side and so forth. Those are the common currency of everyday debate in Washington (and not just in Washington).…

Smith: Taxpayer-Funded Climate Org Allegedly Seeks Criminal Penalties for Skeptics

Washington, D.C. – Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) today sent a letter to Dr. Jagadish Shukla, a professor of climate dynamics at George Mason University who founded the Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES).  IGES is a non-profit organization that has received millions of dollars in federal grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA.

According to media reports, IGES is responsible for circulating a letter to the president and senior White House officials requesting a criminal investigation of organizations who question the risks of climate change. Specifically, the letter seeks a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) investigation that would allow the government to impose criminal penalties. The letter was posted to the IGES website and later removed and replaced with a note saying it had been “inadvertently posted.”

Chairman Smith: “IGES appears to be almost fully funded by taxpayer money while simultaneously participating in partisan political activity by requesting a RICO investigation of companies and organizations that disagree with the Obama administration on climate change. In fact, IGES has reportedly received $63 million from taxpayers since 2001, comprising over 98 percent of its total revenue during that time.”

In light of the non-profit’s decision to remove the controversial letter from its website, Smith directs IGES to preserve “all e-mail, electronic documents, and data created since January 1, 2009, that can be reasonably anticipated to be subject to a request for production by the Committee.”

Professor Accused of ‘Getting Rich’ Off ‘Global Warming’ – Warmist Prof. Seeking RICO Prosecution of Skeptics ‘Pocketed $5.6 million’ from Taxpayers

Meet Jagadish Shukla, professor of climate dynamics at George Mason University. On September 1, Dr. Shukla and 19 other climate scientists sent a letter to President Obama, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and White House Office of Science and Technology policy director John Holdren calling for “a RICO investigation of corporations and other organizations that have knowingly deceived the American people about the risks of climate change,” a (criminally irresponsible) tactic initially proposed by Rhode Island senator Sheldon Whitehouse in a Washington Post op-ed in May.

The letter could be found on the website of the Institute of Global Environment and Society (IGES) — the “non-profit, tax-exempt research institute” founded and headed by Dr. Shukla. And then it couldn’t. In late September, the “RICO20” letter vanished from the IGES website; in its place is a message explaining that “the letter was inadvertently posted on this web site [and] has been removed.”

Lead RICO20 Scientist Shukla Collects Climate Cash: ‘Over a million dollars in total in 2014 alone’

In addition, the “non-profit” organization had also employed one of Shukla’s children (not reported, but say $90,000); and,
IGES transferred $100,000 from its climate grants to a second corporation controlled by the Shukla family (the Institute for Global Education Equality of Opportunity and Prosperity, Inc.), which in turn transferred $100,000 to an educational charity in Shukla’s home town in India, doubtless a worthy charity, but one that Shukla could have supported from his own already generous stipend.
Over a million dollars in total in 2014 alone.
In addition, Shukla’s long-time associate, James Kinter, participated in the same double dip, though on a less grandiose scale. Kinter, also a Professor at George Mason, doubled his 2014 university salary of $180,038 with $171,320 from IGES, for a total 2014 income of $351,358.…
