CNN criticized on Earth Day for daring to air a climate skeptic

There was a certain melancholy about Earth Day 2017. The decades of failed predictions of doom, those damn frackers giving us cheap gas back, and now the Trump administration cutting regulations. No wonder some of the front men are getting a little testy.

Like Bill Nye, the guy who doesn’t have a science degree. Matthe Balan ofMediaite caught him revealing his inner authoritarian:

TV personality Bill Nye criticized CNN on New Day Saturday for letting a skeptic of man-made climate change participate in a panel discussion.

“I will say, much as I love CNN, you’re doing a disservice by having one climate change skeptic, and not 97 or 98 scientists or engineers concerned about climate change,” Nye contended.

Nye appeared with May Boeve of the green action group 350.org and Princeton University physics professor William Happer, who has downplayed the impact of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. So despite the two-to-one slant in favor of the environmentalists, the former PBS host wasn’t satisfied.

The message of the American Left has devolved into “shut up!”

This Isn’t A ‘March For Science’ — This Is About Economic And Political Policy

The complaint which is driving the ‘March for Science’ isn’t about an attack on science at all. Far from it, it’s one group of scientists not understanding that the policy they advocate is , by the scientific experts in the policy, considered to be a bad one which should be replaced. “Let’s be clear: the work of science has nothing whatever to do with consensus.

‘March for Science’ fully admits: ‘The march is explicitly a political movement’

https://www.marchforscience.com/faq/

Q: How does the march define being political? A: “The march is explicitly a political movement, aimed at holding leaders in politics and science accountable. When institutions of any affiliation skew, ignore, misuse or interfere with science, we have to speak out. Science should inform political decision making. At the same time, political decisions deeply influence the type of science we are able to do and the type of people who are allowed to conduct science and benefit from scientific advancements.”

‘March for Science’ Group Laments Trump’s Bombing Of ‘Marginalized’ ISIS Fighters

By MICHAEL BASTASCH

The organization behind the “March for Science” tweeted the Trump administration’s bombing Islamic State fighters in Afghanistan is “an example of how science is weaponized against marginalized people.”

The march’s Twitter account sent out the tweet lamenting the bombing in reply to a post by activist Zellie Imani with the Black Liberation Collective — a group of students dedicated to “bringing about freedom and liberation for all Black people.”

The “March for Science” is being organized by activist scientists and environmentalists opposed to the Trump administration’s policies and proposed cuts to federal agencies. The march is planned for D.C. on Earth Day April 22.

March organizers eventually deleted the tweet, but not before meteorologist Ryan Maue captured screenshots.

Bill Nye not wanted at ‘March For Science’: He’s the wrong race, sex

By Dr. Lubos Motl

On April 22nd i.e. the birthday of Vladimir Lenin, radical left-wing activists plan to organize the March For Science where they want to reiterate Lenin’s opinion that Marxism-Leninism-Progressivism is one (and perhaps the only) scientific world view. Willis Eschenbach at Anthony Watts’ blog and William Briggs at Stream.org have had lots of fun with some developments that have turned the event into a truly ludicrous farce.

The most amusing development is that numerous enthusiastic and important organizers have attacked the idea that Bill Nye should be a leader of the parade – for a funny reason.

Just to be sure, the reason is not that Bill Nye is just a “clown the scientist” who starred as a cool scientist on a TV show for kids two decades ago – rather than a real scientist. No one behind the March For Science cares whether the leaders of the parade know something or nothing about science as long as their ideology is sufficiently left-wing.

The trouble with Bill Nye is that he is a white male! Your parents have just doubly screwed it, Bill, or triply if I count Bill Nye himself as the third screw-up.…

Analysis: ‘March For Science’ Descending Into ‘Farce’

By WILLIAM M BRIGGS Published on April 9, 20177 Comments

Last thing the March for Science needs, say some agitated folks, is Bill Nye the “Science Guy” co-leading the parade. Why?

Their complaint is not that he’s an errorprone non-scientist, though that’s true. See, Nye is white. And a man. And some organizers are concerned that onlookers will notice Nye is white, and a man, and project his male-whiteness onto science itself. That in turn will cause the gullible to figure science is mostly done by white men.

Which, historically and in many current fields, it was and is. Now this fact may be for good or for bad, but it is a fact. And it’s not likely those who say they are “for” science and reason would be pleased were the contributions from white men removed from science. So long, calculus!

Or maybe they would be. Because it seems organizers believe scientific results are less important than who is producing them. Diversity trumps science.

Proof? Buzzfeed reports that, so far, the March for Science has already gone through “four diversity statements.” So the Twitter account @ScienceMarchDC tweeted (and later deleted) “colonization, racism, immigration, native rights, sexism, ableism, queer-, trans-, intersex-phobia, & econ justice are scientific issues.” The tweet also pictured a black power fist and rainbow flag icons.

Of course, science per se is silent on all these matters. But that’s because natural science alone is mute on every moral and ethical question put to it. Including the question whether to deign to include a white man holding a science baton.

“I love Bill Nye,” said Stephani Page, a biophysicist at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who created the Twitter hashtag #BlackAndSTEM. Page was asked to join the march’s board in February after she tweeted criticism of its approach to diversity. “But I do feel comfortable saying to you what I said to the steering committee: He is a white male, and in that way he does represent the status quo of science, of what it is to be a scientist.”

And being a scientist is not about race and sex. It’s about intelligence, talent, interest, drive, money, and luck. Much the same as what success in most fields require.

The March organizers say nothing about this. They want us to know what they really stand for

Anti-Trump ‘March For Science’ Protest Has Problems W/ Bill Nye Because He’s A White Guy

The March for Science is another one of those liberal anti-Trump rallies. This one is being organized by scientists who believe the Trump administration is planning on reversing every scientific discovery since Copernicus. Originally they chose Bill Nye the fraudulent science guy as their public face, but there was an uprising against the decision because he’s a white guy.

The March for Life is a protest against what liberal scientists believe is President Trump’s anti-Science agenda:

Nearly 400 marches in 37 countries will take place on April 22, demonstrating global resistance to Trump agenda

President Donald Trump’s administration has fulfilled his campaign rhetoric when it comes to waging war on science, from erasing WhiteHouse.gov references to climate change on the day of his inauguration, to banning the term “climate change” at the Department of Energy’s climate office, to proposing massive cuts to medical research to fund a new U.S.-Mexico border wall.

On April 22, a global March for Science will see 400 events in 37 countries, with a massive march in Washington, D.C. Organizers also announced Thursday that prominent scientists Bill Nye, Lydia Villa-Komaroff, and Mona Hanna-Attisha will be honorary co-chairs of the March for Science

One would think that if the March For Science organizers would have problems with Bill Nye as their public face it would be because he is not now, nor has he ever been a real science guy. Just a Steve Martin impersonator who became a sketch comedy guy.

Heat Street reports

They were supposed to have gotten their internal issues under control, but this week a new fight broke out over whether Bill Nye the Science Guy, the former children’s television host who considers himself the leader of the “pro-science movement” should lead the protest. The problem? Nye is a “white male.”

Nye, who is not, in fact, a scientist, except on television (he’s an engineer by trade), was slated to be the March’s chair, and an announcement was made last week. But organizers quickly panicked that having Nye at the forefront of the event meant they might be substantiating the idea that scientists are only old white men.…

March For Science To Bill Nye, The Science Guy: Take A Back Seat, You’re White.

The March for Science, scheduled for April 22, was planning to have Bill Nye, the Science Guy, function as the event’s first honorary co-chair, but then made a startling discovery.

Nye is white.

That did it; complaints mounted that the event was not featuring people of color, and voila! As Buzzfeed reports, “Mona Hanna-Attisha, the pediatrician who first exposed dangerous lead poisoning among the mostly poor black kids in Flint, Michigan, and Lydia Villa-Komaroff, a molecular biologist famous for helping to figure out how to get bacteria to make insulin,” were added to the list.

Forget the fact that Nye isn’t even a scientist; Stephani Page, a biophysicist at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill who was invited to the march’s board after she questioned its commitment to diversity, fulminated, “I love Bill Nye. But I do feel comfortable saying to you what I said to the steering committee: He is a white male, and in that way he does represent the status quo of science, of what it is to be a scientist.” Page added that adding the two women “was an opportunity to put up a picture of science that did not just fit the white male image.”

The march’s lead organizer, Jonathan Berman, admitted, “We did talk internally about the optics of having the first person to be announced be only a white man.”…

Bill Nye to headline DC March for (Global Warming) Science

Bill Nye the Science Guy plans to headline the upcoming March for Science in Washington.

He joins Mona Hanna-Attisha, the doctor who helped expose lead poisoning in Flint, Mich., as well as a molecular biologist who helped develop the technique for making insulin, Lydia Villa-Komaroff.

Organizers announced yesterday that the three will be honorary co-chairs during the April 22 event on the National Mall.

Nye said before the announcement that he’s never seen the scientific community so energized — or troubled — by political issues.

“Science is what makes our world what it is,” Nye said. “To have a movement or a tendency to set science aside is in no one’s best interest … but nevertheless, that’s what’s happening in the U.S.”

The march has sister events planned in over 400 cities, and it could become one of the scientific community’s largest demonstrations ever (Sarah Kaplan, Washington Post, March 30). — CS

Not Funny: Monty Python’s Eric Idle: Climate skeptics should be put on trial for ‘crimes against humanity’

Comedian Eric Idle, of “Monty Python” fame, issued a call to place “global warming” skeptics on trial at the World Court because “denying climate change is a crime against humanity. ”

“I think that denying climate change is a crime against humanity. And they should be held accountable in a World Court,” Idle tweeted from his @EricIdle account on March 15. (H/T: Twitchy)

Climate activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. also called for the “climate deniers” to be jailed at the World Court in 2014. See: 2014: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Wants To Jail ‘Climate Deniers’ – ‘Do I think they should be in jail, I think they should be enjoying three hots and a cot at the Hague with all the other war criminals,” Kennedy declared. Bill Nye, seemed to agree. This is not the first time Eric Idle has entered the climate change debate. In 2016, Idle slammed Austrian Senator Malcolm Roberts for his public skepticism of man-made global warming claims. Idle tweeted: “Where do people like Malcolm Roberts Come from and how do they get elected? To Deny climate change is very dangerous to us all,” Idle tweeted on August 16, 2016.

Update: James Delingpole of Breitbart reports: Climate Change Deniers Should Be Executed ‘Gently’ says Eric Idle – Even though he does apparently believe that the punishment for such “stupidity and ignorance” should be death, Idle generously insists that these deniers should be “put down” “humanely.” He added, “Put down gently.”

Idle posted this Christmas tweet on December 21, 2016 with the title ‘More meds?’
