NYT reporter Justin Gillis Antarctic ice claims called ‘a joke’ by climatologist — Gillis’ polar sea ice claims called ‘a total irrelevancy’ & ‘ludicrous’

Antarctic sea ice has expanded in 2012 to record levels since satellite monitoring began in 1979. [See: ‘Antarctica has quietly set a new record for the greatest sea ice extent ever measured at either pole’]

The New York Times has finally decided to report on the record South Pole ice expansion. But Times global warming reporter Justin Gillis’ attempt downplay the South Pole sea ice record is being challenged by Climatologist Dr. Patrick Michaels.

Gillis, in a October 3, 2012 New York Times article titled “Running the Numbers on Antarctic Sea Ice”, claimed that Arctic sea ice was being lost 25 times faster than Antarctic sea ice was being expanded. Gillis is now under fire for his polar ice claims.

Climatologist Dr. Patrick Michaels told Climate Depot that Gillis was engaging “a ludicrous gaming of the cruel facts of geography, a total irrelevancy” in order to make the claim that Arctic ice was being lost “25 times” faster than Antarctic ice was being gained. Michaels corrects Gillis by noting ‘the Arctic net loss is about twice the gain in Antarctica.”

Gillis wrote: “Let’s average the first five years of the satellite record, from 1979 to 1983. In that period, the sea ice left at the end of the summer melt season covered about 13.8 percent of the surface of the Southern Ocean. In the most recent five years, the average rose to 14.6 percent of the ocean. So, expressed as a percentage of ocean cover, the decline going on in the Arctic is almost 25 times the increase going on in the Antarctic.”

Dr. Patrick Michaels full statement on NYT’s Justin Gillis: “Taking five year averages from the beginning and the end of the records is a joke. An actual scientist would regression-fit the linear increase in Antarctic ice anomalies (in square km) and second-order fit (because it is obviously a curve) the decline in Arctic ice using the similar metric (data are from Cryosphere Today). The trended gain in Antarctic ice is about 0.9 million square kilometers, while the (second order) trended decline in the Arctic is about 1.7. The Arctic net loss is about twice the gain in Antarctica.

Gillis’ ’25 times’ figure is a ludicrous gaming of the cruel facts of geography, a total irrelevancy.”

End Michaels statement.

Gillis has been repeatedly under fire his global warming reporting from scientists

NYT warmist Justin Gillis: ‘Perhaps the biggest single question about climate change is whether people will have enough to eat in coming decades’

Special to Climate Depot

New York Times climate reporter Justin Gillis wrote a September 6, 2012 in an article titled “Climate Change and the Food Supply”. Gillis claimed: “Perhaps the biggest single question about climate change is whether people will have enough to eat in coming decades.” Gillis added: “Severe weather shocks could cause further spikes, induce panic buying, prompt countries to close their borders to food exports and even lead to riots and revolutions.”

The following is a rebuttal to to the claims of NYT’s Justin Gillis by Climatologist Dr. Tim Ball.

By Dr. Timothy Ball

According to Paul Ehrlich we are mostly supposed to be dead from starvation already.

They are shifting the goal posts again because nature defeated their warming scare and the public are ignoring the climate change scare. Chronologically, it was overpopulation, environmental collapse, global warming, climate change, catastrophic climate change. Now they are back to collapse of the food supply leaving only failure of the water supply and they have already started working on that. There are references to ‘peak water’ already in their literature. See: http://www.wired.com/science/planetearth/magazine/16-05/ff_peakwater?currentPage=all

Maybe Justin Gillis should contact [Obama Science Advisor] John Holdren, Paul Ehrlich’s co-author, for the solution in their 1977 book Population, Resources, Environment. Holdren proposed,

• Women could be forced to abort their pregnancies, whether they wanted to or not;

• The population at large could be sterilized by infertility drugs intentionally put into the nation’s drinking water or in food;

• Single mothers and teen mothers should have their babies seized from them against their will and given away to other couples to raise;

• People who “contribute to social deterioration” (i.e. undesirables) “can be required by law to exercise reproductive responsibility” — in other words, be compelled to have abortions or be sterilized.

• A transnational “Planetary Regime” should assume control of the global economy and also dictate the most intimate details of Americans’ lives — using an armed international police force.

They could also wait as Prince Philip at 91 is close to passing on and will then be able to be reincarnated to achieve his objective. Reported by Deutsche Press Agentur (DPA), August, 1988: “In the event that I am reincarnated, I would like to return as a deadly virus, in order to contribute something to solve overpopulation.”

Don’t Panic! Arctic Ice Hits ‘Record’ Low!? Climate Depot Explains Arctic melting hype

Climate Depot Editorial

First off, Climate Depot extends congratulations to the global warming activists as they celebrate current Arctic ice conditions and try to convince the public that it is a significant event that is due to man-made global warming.

But now, after years of waiting, the Arctic sea ice extent has – at least according to some monitoring sources (See: Update: NOAA Showing 28% More Ice Than The 2007 Minimum) – dipped below the 2007 amount. Of course this is only since satellite monitoring of Arctic began in 1979, so we are in reality talking about 33 years of monitoring. [Update: Has the Arctic record been achieved yet? See Anthony Watts: ‘The NSIDC product, the new and improved “multi-sensor” MASIE product, shows no record low at ~ 4.7 million square kilometers’]

Is this Arctic ice event significant and does it prove man-made global warming claims? Will skeptics now recant and call for carbon taxes to control the weather?

No, no. And No. Global warming activists are clinging to Arctic ice shifts as their number one claim of scientific “proof” as they seek to keep the man-made global warming movement alive.

Current Arctic ice shifts are not “proof” of man-made global warming, nor are they unusual, unprecedented or cause for alarm, according to multiple peer-reviewed studies, data analyses and experts.

In December 2011, Climate Depot released the A-Z Climate Reality Check report, noting: “The scientific reality is that on virtually every claim — from A-Z — the claims of the promoters of man-made climate fears are failing.” Since that report was issued and presented to the UN climate conference in Durban South Africa, the claims of man-made climate promoters have continued to fail on every issue from sea levels to polar bears to global temperatures to Mt. Kilimanjaro to extreme weather claims to hurricanes to tornadoes to Antarctic ice. The failure has been so complete that global warming activists and many in the media are now forced to point to any bad weather event as somehow “proof” of man-made global warming.

Here is how the media is presenting the current Arctic ice conditions: AP’s Seth Borenstein: Scientists say critical ice in the Arctic Ocean melted to record low levels this overheated summer. — The National Snow and Ice Data Center reported Monday that the extent of Arctic sea ice shrank to 1.58 million square miles and is likely to
