Global Hurricane Activity At 45-Year Low

4-Year Global Cyclone Energy At 45-Year Low!

By on 10. September 2015

Even though it is not true, alarmist sites everywhere continue citing “increased storm activity” as evidence of man-made climate change. Yet, when we look at the numbers, we see that nothing could be further from the truth.

At Twitter earlier today Philip Klotzbach tweeted, “Seasonal ACE only 50% of normal thru 9/9.”

Indeed looking at weather site www.wunderground.com we see that global cyclone activity measured by the “Accumulated Cyclone Energy” (ACE) index over the past four years is even at a 45-year low!

ACE Global 2015

Global Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) since 1970. Chart shows that storm activity worldwide over the past 4 years is at a 45-year low and that the trend has been in steep decline since 1990. Source: www.wunderground.com.

[Note: NOAA explains: “The only difference between a hurricane, a cyclone, and a typhoon is the location where the storm occurs. Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are all the same weather phenomenon; we just use different names for these storms in different places. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, the term “hurricane” is used. The same type of disturbance in the Northwest Pacific is called a “typhoon” and “cyclones” occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.”]

Some years ago alarmist climate scientists, who insist a consensus backs their science, claimed with high certainty that global warming would increase the frequency and intensity of cyclones globally. We were told to expect “super-charged storms”, all fueled by global warming heat.

Well, something must be awfully wrong with their science. The exact opposite is true. The same has happened with temperature, global sea ice, and snow cover.

Perhaps the global warming experts will tell us that the huge cyclones are hidden somewhere deep in the oceans along with the “missing heat”, getting ready to pounce later in the future.

    1. Anybody else remember what Big Al Bore said after Hurricane’s Rita and Katrina? There would be more and fiercer storms if we didn’t take action NOW! The media seems to not remember….

    2. This article is the new “Inconvenient truth” at least for Al and his climate cult.
The only people who believed “the day after tomorrow” scenario where people who where born yesterday.

    3. Al Gore’s Predictions since that
      RIDICULOUS MOCKUMENTARY
      are even more BIZARRE.
      NO artic ice by 2013!
      LIFE ends in 2016.
      If another Democrat Progressive SOCIALIST
gets elected in 2016 that could be true.
      .

  1. “Perhaps the global warming experts will tell us that the huge cyclones are hidden somewhere deep in the oceans along with the “missing heat”, getting ready to pounce later in the future.”
I assure you the global climate warming change group is just waiting to pounce at the first sign of any storm activity in the U.S. southeast.

    1. Having run for my life from forest fires and being able to actually look up the frequency of fires and see that it is increasing really helps me grasp the reality of change we’re experiencing. Now that I’m coastal, I’m leaning about the rapidly changing ecosystem under the surface of the water. Locally, dozens of crabbing spots have been shut down as the rising water temperatures have made them unusable. I hope that you too soon enjoy the experiences our new man-made climate is providing for us every single day. And remember, your denial is killing all of our children. With your help, we can get rid of pesky humans for good!

      1. I have lived on the coast for 30 years. Work on an island. In those 30 years, for approximately 2 years about 20 years ago we had some local beds closed for reasons long since forgotten to me. Don’t try to toss out random, unsubstantiated boogy men to counteract falsified data and the actual fact of no warming in the last 15 years, record time span of lulls in hurricane activity, expanding Artic ice. Al Gore bought a multi-million dollar house and property right on the Pacific Ocean. You think he is worried it will be unusable any time soon? Doh! My property is about 25 feet above sea level. I am hoping for water levels to rise 24 feet. Ocean front property, baby.

  2. How can this be? The highly advanced computer models designed by people with lots of fancy degrees told us that storms would get worse and more plentiful. Does this mean they’ve been lying to us? Or does it mean the models are garbage? Lies or junk science. I dunno, pick one I guess.

      1. It’s entirely possible. However, I remember from the “climate-gate” emails that the programmers had inserted comments into the program code indicating the math was wrong. The comments indicated frustration with not following well known proper equations. I’ve held since the beginning of this that the leftist academics who designed the models did so to produce a specific result – one that shows future runaway warming whether it’s there or not. This all started because of the left’s hatred of capitalism and the profits made by oil companies. These very same models have also failed to predict the last 18 years of no significant change in planetary temperature (as actually measured).

    1. There is yet hope, Rick: just trust in our friend, Big Government, and give it all the money it asks for and it will save us. But you have to BELIEVE, comrade! Do you believe? Do you really believe?! LET ME HEAR YOU SAY, “I BELIEVE!”
And give me a big “Amen!”
AGW: the only religion based on socialism.

  3. If global warming “science” were real science, it would long ago have been wholly discredited by the complete and utter failure of its predictions. That’s how the Scientific Method is supposed to work.

  4. This is because it’s gotten so hot that the hurricanes that usually form have burned up in the upper atmosphere due to excessive CO2 buildup combined with the drop in the ozone layer. Anyway, yada ,yada, yada, you need to pay more in taxes.

  5. It was a hypothesis that never got beyond being a misled explanation for some years that were warmer than usual. There is no science and never was. Just Mann’s disproven graph and conclusions drawn from badly programmed computer models that were sold in the media as science. The physical nature of CO2 shows it is a lousy insulator that is incapable of causing any significant climate change. So many reputations are on the line that they are having issues coming to grips with the truth.

  6. How can this be? The Goreacle told us they would get worse. He told us our cities would be underwater by now. The polar caps gone, the polar bear carcasses floating in the arctic sea. I bought beach front property in Oklahoma damnit….

  7. And Obama just prophecied more disasters due to global warming. …and he does this with his vast expertise in climate change he learned in 2 days….laughable

  8. I’m so glad Al and O’whats his name stopped global warming and saved the planet. i think we should all call the whitehouse and thank the president. (202) 456-1111

  9. And that is the question. Can we as a class sue the climate warming lobby? If this were a wall street investment bank, which by the way there is some comparison, giving advice on an economic activity they would be sued for giving false and misleading info. Why do democRATS get to play by different rules?

  10. I wonder how long before some democrat takes credit for this? “Due to our diligence, immediate catastrophe has been averted. But we are in this for the long haul so give us more money.”

  11. I will tell you what. How about working to accurately predict the weather next week and once you have that down, go for a month… Get that spot on and we can then talk about Global Warming – changed to – Man Made Climate Change – changed to – Climate Change. At least the last one is accurate as the Climate is always changing. Funny, the only solution they offer is more reliance and paying the government more money when the elephant in the room as the only solution to the actual problem is population and no one is going to talk about that anymore. I think that was the topic, along with Nuke Winters and Little Ice Age’s when I was a kid.

  12. I remeber how, each year after Katrina, earnest people from the NHC would appear on TV and confidently predict “a season of increased activity, with more named storms”. But each year, there were FEWER storms. After 3-4 years, they quietly stopped making those predictions.

    1. I’m just shocked that, like professional mongoose repellers, they (the “warmists”) aren’t crowing from the highest rooftops about how THEIR Global Warming preventative measures, and taxation are preventing ANY warming in the last (what is it now) 18 years??
      – I mean, the professional mongoose repellers just tell people to LOOK AROUND and notice the dearth of MONGOOSES!! Global Warmists can now basically say the same thing!! Right??

  13. Sung to the TV theme of “The Beverly Hillbillies”

Come and listen to a story about a man named Gore
He wanted to rape a maid and became a climate whore
After he lost in a Presidential race
He sold some carbon credits at a frenzied pace…fast that is…Chicago gold….Leftist tee-hee.

Well the first thing you know old Gore’s a millionaire
His Tennessee kin said “Move away from there!”
“California is the place for loons like you!”
So he bought himself a mansion on the cliffs of Malibu.

  14. Sung to the TV theme song “Green Acres”

“Green Planet” is the place for me!
    I’m a fool!… and with Hussein I agree!
    Air! Polluted with your CO2!
Libs like me want to see the end of you!

We kill babies before they’re given birth!
And we’ll kill you just to save the Earth!
Science be damned, we have captured hearts!
We’ll put an end to your breathing and your endless cutting of f arts!!

  15. and the North Pole is adding hundreds of square miles of new ice; ‘guess those taxpayer subsidized Volts (and other “coal powered vehicles”) are doing the job! Who would’ve thought that so few would accomplish so much?

    1. There is no way to prove ice expansion in the northern hemisphere because the main research vessel that studys the melting is stuck in the ice in the southern hemisphere.

  16. Drudge: hurricane activity at 45 year low (link to Climate Depot).

So, hurricane activity number = ACE

Except, that’s not what ACE measures:

“Accumulated cyclone energy, or “ACE,” is
used to express the activity and destructive potential of individual
tropical cyclones and entire tropical cyclone seasons. ACE is calculated
as the square of the wind speed every 6 hours, and is then scaled by a
factor of 10,000 for usability. The ACE of a season is the sum of the
ACE for each storm and takes into account the number, strength, and
duration of all the tropical storms in the season. The caveat to using
ACE as a measure of the activity of a season is that it does not take
the size of the hurricane or tropical storm into account. The damage
potential of a hurricane is proportional to the square or cube of the
maximum wind speed, and thus ACE is not only a measure of tropical
cyclone activity, but a measure of the damage potential of an individual
    cyclone or a season.”

No wonder drudgetards are so stupid. They believe whatever they are told, even if the facts are presented to them thru links.

    Well done drudgetards, well done!

    1. I guess math was never your strongpoint in school.

While ACE does not measure the number of hurricanes, it is actually a better measure of the strength of hurricanes and how much power they have. More bluntly, if there is more power in hurricanes as predicted by the global warning charlatans, than ACE has to go up.

So let’s walk it through shall we?

First, squaring the velocity of the wind gives you a better estimate of energy (in case your knowledge of physics is as bad as your math, it’s the whole KE=1/2mv squared thing).

Now power is the amount of energy over a unit of time. And the amount of work is the integral of power over time.

So, if you break down the duration of the storm into manageable chunks, say every six hours, multiple by a number that is proportional to the power by said six hours, sum up all the numbers for the Hurricanes worldwide, you get the ACE, which is a measure of performance (or effectiveness they are pretty much the same here) of hurricanes. ACE means nothing in itself, but it is proportional, it a large way, to the total work of all hurricanes worldwide and is an indicator that allows you to help evaluate if the number of hurricanes and their strength and duration is growing. In other words, if the number of hurricanes and their power is growing. If there were really more hurricanes and they were bigger, then ACE should be going through the roof. And it’s global, so just because the Atlantic basin for instance is quiet, it doesn’t mean ACE is going down.

So sorry, if ACE is going down, it shows that the amount of work being done by cyclonic action is also going down. And unlike a specific event, it is averaged out over the entire globe. So it is impossible to cherry pick like say “Super” Storm Sandy which wasn’t even a hurricane when it made landfall.

So if you are going to make fun of people, it might make sense to actually know what you are talking about.

      1. So if you are going to make fun of people, it might make sense to actually know what you are talking about.

Sarcasm does tend to lose its sting when the poster is a mindless, AGW lemming.

        Great post, BTW.

      1. And he generates data?

No. He has a poli-sci degree and writes a blog. You’re right…he is exactly the definition of what a political hack is.

And you were completely unaware of it. Good job!

          1. He reinterpreted some data to make a story, one that the hundreds of people involved in accumulating and analyzing the data disagree with (aside from the fact he is fundamentally in error by using a measure of storm strength for the number of hurricanes).

            Eff off lemming.

  17. Who to believe? The scientists who said the evidence was incontrovertible and there was no such thing as a “hiatus” in AGW, or the scientists who now explain how the data that showed a hiatus were misleading. Were they lying back then, or are they lying now? I don’t recall seeing any footnotes to the effect “Technically the actual observed climate data does not support the conclusions we are reaching.”
ps. I am reminded of Glenn Reynolds’ famous line in his recurring expose’s about the criminal records of actual journalists (paraphrased): “I do not mean to imply that most journalists are either wife-beaters, pedophiles, or habitual drunk-drivers. No, in fact many of them are all three.”

    1. You’re not actually getting any of your information from “scientists”, are you? Can you actually name any of the scientists that have given you any of this inaccurate information? Or even an organization that does climate research? You know, without having to go look it up… …of course you can’t.

      1. I am recalling their public statements as widely reported in the media. If I was writing a paper I would cite sources, but I am commenting on a blog – just like you are. To claim that my argument is specious because it does not meet the standard of a completely different situation is just avoiding dealing with the reality that the positions of AGW proponents have contradicted themselves when it was convenient to do so.

  18. This is impossible! We were assured that AGW was going to cause a massive increase in devastating storms! Only the evil deniers would spread a rumour that contradicts AGW predictions! New York City is under water and so are Amsterdam and London, too, just as predicted. Are you going to believe the evidence of your silly eyes and ears or are you going to believe what the omniscient Climate Scientists tell you?!

  19. Examining the record

Several studies in the last decade have reported enhanced hurricane activity in some regions. For example:

Roughly twice as many hurricanes are now reported in the Atlantic
compared to a century ago. The rise, identified by Greg Holland (NCAR),
occurred over three distinct periods associated with rises in
sea-surface temperature (see NCAR news release).

In both the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans, the duration of
tropical cyclones as well as their strongest wind speeds have both
increased by about 50% over the past 50 years, according to Kerry
Emanuel, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (see MIT news release).

The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes worldwide nearly doubled
from the early 1970s to the early 2000s, found a team from the Georgia
Institute of Technology and NCAR (see NCAR news release).

  20. In 2005, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warned that
imminent sea-level rises, increased hurricanes, and desertification
caused by “man-made global warming” would lead to massive population
disruptions. In a handy map, the organization highlighted areas that
were supposed to be particularly vulnerable in terms of producing
“climate refugees.” Especially at risk were regions such as the
Caribbean and low-lying Pacific islands, along with coastal areas.

The 2005 UNEP predictions claimed that, by 2010, some 50 million
“climate refugees” would be frantically fleeing from those regions of
the globe. However, not only did the areas in question fail to produce a
single “climate refugee,” by 2010, population levels for those regions
were actually still soaring. In many cases, the areas that were supposed
to be producing waves of “climate refugees” and becoming uninhabitable
turned out to be some of the fastest-growing places on Earth.

In the Bahamas, for example, according to the 2010 census, there was a
major increase in population, going from around 300,000 in 2000 to more
than 350,000 by 2010. The population of St. Lucia, meanwhile, grew by
five percent during the same period. The Seychelles grew by about 10
percent. The Solomon Islands also witnessed a major population boom
during that time frame, gaining another 100,000 people, or an increase
of about 25 percent.

In China, meanwhile, the top six fastest growing cities were all
within the areas highlighted by the UN as likely sources of “climate
refugees.” Many of the fastest-growing U.S. cities were also within or
close to “climate refugee” danger zones touted by the UN

Rather than apologizing for its indisputable mistake after being
first exposed by reporter Gavin Atkins at Asian Correspondent, the
global body responded in typical alarmist fashion: with an Orwellian
coverup seeking to erase all evidence of its ridiculous predictions.
First, the UNEP took its “climate refugees” map down from the Web. That
failed, of course, because the content was archived online prior to its
disappearance down the UN “memory hole.

Then the UNEP tried and failed to distance itself from the outlandish
claims, despite the fact that the map was created by a UNEP
cartographer, released by UNEP, and repeatedly hyped by the outfit in
its scaremongering campaigns. Eventually, as more and more media around
the world began picking up the story, a spokesperson for the UN agency
claimed the map was removed because it was “causing confusion.”

It was hardly the first time UN bureaucrats had made such dire
predictions, only to be proven wrong. On June 30, 1989, the Associated
Press ran an article headlined: “UN Official Predicts Disaster, Says
Greenhouse Effect Could Wipe Some Nations Off Map.” In the piece, the
director of the UNEP’s New York office was quoted as claiming that
“entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea
levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000.” He also
predicted “coastal flooding and crop failures” that “would create an
exodus of ‘eco-refugees,’ threatening political chaos.”

Other UN predictions were so ridiculous that they were retracted
before they could even be proven wrong. Consider, as just one example,
the scandal that came to be known as “Glaciergate.” In its final 2007
report, widely considered the “gospel” of “settled” climate “science,”
the UN IPCC suggested that Himalayan glaciers could melt by 2035 or
sooner. It turns out the wild assertion was lifted from World Wildlife
Fund propaganda literature. The IPCC recanted the claim after initially
defending it.

  21. First it was global cooling, then global warming neither did fit, so its now global climate change. Well we have had global climate change for over billions of years, does man think that he can change that?

  22. More Global Warmism “science”:

[A] study by Matthew Ranson of Abt Associates, a research and consulting firm in Cambridge, Mass., suggests global warming will trigger more crimes including murders and rapes over the next century, with social costs estimated to run as high as $115 billion.

Between 2010 and 2099, climate change can be expected to cause an additional 22,000 murders, 180,000 cases of rape, 1.2 million aggravated assaults, 2.3 million simple assaults, 260,000 robberies, 1.3 million burglaries, 2.2 million cases of larceny and 580,000 cases of vehicle theft, the study published this week in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management says.

  23. More deleterious effects of Global Warming:

Global Warming Makes Couples Cheat, Says Dating Website

By Ciara LaVelle Wed., May 28 2014 at 9:00 AM

If you’re married in Miami, you might want to get out of town this summer. No, not to avoid the hurricanes — to avoid a nasty divorce.

A new report blames global warming for rising rates of infidelity, especially bad news for couples in Miami, where rising tides and raging hurricanes remind us all how much extracurricular sex we could be having on a daily basis.

See also: Rolling Stone Predicts Miami Will Be Underwater By 2030

Victoria Milan, a dating website for people looking to cheat on their significant other, surveyed 5,000 of its members, both men and women. A shocking 72% of them responded that yes, their own Al Gore-esque stress about unpredictable weather is the cause of their extra-marital dalliances. Guess the fact of their existing committed relationships was just an inconvenient truth.

Survey respondents also reported that they’re more likely to sneak a little on the side in hot weather than in cold. That makes sense — after all, which would you say is sexier, a steamy Miami day or a polar vortex?

“Summer loving is something everyone experiences when they’re growing up, and the excitement and thrill of doing something a bit naughty never fades,” explains Victoria Milan CEO and founder Sigurd Vedal in a statement. “It’s no surprise that one half of a couple feels the itch when the weather warms up.”

So let’s recap: hot, unpredictable weather makes for unfaithful partners. Just when you thought your hope of finding true love in Miami had hit rock bottom, a story like this comes along to prove there’s even farther to fall. But hey, we’ll all be underwater in 15 years anyway, right?

  24. Strange, Gore and his lap dogs said, after katrina, that hurricane activity in the Atlantic would do nothing but get busier and stronger.
Oh, darn. Sounds like they need to repackage their ponzi scheme. Again.

  25. I get nostalgic for the previous scares like depletion of the ozone layer and, of course, this:

National Academy of Sciences Issued Report Warning of Coming Ice Age in 1975

NASA warned of human caused coming ‘ice age’ in 1971

1971: “The Effect of Atmospheric Aerosols on Climate with Special Reference to Temperature near the Earth’s Surface.” J. Applied Meteorology 10: 703-14. – Mitchell, J. Murray, Jr.

  26. Al Gore said by 2015 we wouldn’t be able to go outside anymore and the ice cover at both poles would be gone. Easy to say in 1995, but now we know how accurate Global Warming Climate Change Alarmists can be.

  27. What more proof of man caused global warming do you need? If we keep burning fossil fuels, pretty soon there will be no hurricanes at all. That will jeopardize life as we know it. We had better raise taxes and redistribute wealth to the tree huggers if we want to have a future.

  28. Let’s get serious, the oceans are absorbing the cyclonic energy and holding it for a superstorm at a later date. That way the data can be adjusted to show the energy is much higher it’s just in potential energy form and not kinetic.

    1. And yet SOMEHOW they predicted, unambiguously, 10 years ago, that the frequency and severity of hurricanes would continue to increase. Guess they must have missed the “potential energy” angle, huh?

  29. This is obviously another insidious plot by the Koch Brothers. Just as they have conspired to hide evidence of warming in the deep oceans so, too, they are now hiding hurricanes.

These stealth hurricanes are rendered invisible to weather satellites because TKB control the government, and the hurricanes are being directed at the Mideast. That’s why people are migrating from that area.

You laugh? Well just you wait until you open your front door and are confronted with an invisible hurricane. See who laughs then! Yeah.

This update brought to you by Harry Reid.

    1. Oh yeah. One of those invisible hurricanes knocked me off my feet the other day. I thought it was a banana peel, but after I got up I didn’t see any banana peel anywhere. So it MUST have been once of those stealth invisible hurricanes! Glad I’m not the only one who is aware of them.

  30. It’s really frustrating to come here and see such ignorant comments. Climate change isn’t a political issue. If your comment includes the name of a political party, you’re part of the overall problem. You’re not looking at all of the data here, you’re looking at a single, poorly referenced graph out of context. Nevermind the fact that we had 3 simultaneous hurricanes in the Pacific last month for the first time in recorded history, right? Stop listening to politicians and start reading about science from scientists… please.

    1. Oh sure Scott. And those 3 hurricanes MUST be due to AGW??? Give us a BREAK!! You loons have stated CLEARLY and UNAMBIGUOUSLY that the FREQUENCY and SEVERITY of hurricanes would continue to INCREASE as global warming continues. Are you seriously going to deny that now. Please do, and lose any credibility you may have.

      1. Who are “you loons” numag? I’m not a pundit, scientist, or politician. I do like and respect the practice of science. I have read a lot on climate science and modelling. I earned my Masters at CU Boulder, with a lot of climate science happening near-by. Yes, a lot of scientists have and still do expect an increase in hurricane activity, particularly big hurricanes. And yes, current climate models account for the current lull in activity. Some also believe that the lull relates to changes in the ocean’s temperature and salinity. No, scientists do not know beyond a doubt what’s going to happen. However, they’re doing the best they can to provide accurate data. It’s really sad to see people behaving as if it’s some conspiracy theory… I mean, if so, to what end? And why?

        1. Scott, you failed to even mention the overwhelming influence of our sun as the primary generator of our climate systems. Surely you must have learned something about that at Boulder, I would hope. While everyone would agree that continual burning of fossil fuel is not the best thing for our environment, it also makes no sense to spend TRILLIONS of dollars to try to “fix” something that is, for the most part, out of our hands. How is mankind even remotely capable of affecting, in any way, sunspot activity, which scientists are discovering has more to do with climate activity than anything humanity is doing here. People with common sense want PRACTICAL solutions, not another TAX that will accomplish little more than deplete our already struggling bank accounts.

  31. Care to comment, former vice president and (must . . . not . . . smirk) climate activist Al Gore?

Yes, I see and no, you can’t f❊❊❊ me or the horse I rode in on. I don’t even own a horse.

  32. And yet ANOTHER global warming blatant contradiction getting back page coverage when it should be FRONT PAGE NEWS!! I’m not a conspiracy theorist but this is the closest thing to a CONSPIRACY that I’ve ever seen. When will the MEDIA start reporting that the only people full of hot air are the global warming alarmists, like Al Gore, who have been PROVEN wrong again and again and again!!

  33. A group of people that can’t predict 100% on thursday what the weather will be on Saturday want all of us to alter everything we do, due to “climate change.” Alter these letters and see what you get… UCFK OUY.

  35. What they’re not telling us is why. Fact, it takes warm water for a tropical depression to develop into a hurricane.
What I’m saying is the waters are too cold for a hurricane to develop. This nearly coincides with a world cooling trend for the last 16 or so years. This completely dispels any theory of Global warming

  36. Embarrassing: citing an incomplete dataset. If you click basin by basin, you’ll see that the West Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Southern Hemisphere have no data after 2012. Not surprising that total ACE looks low when you leave out half the data.

See http://models.weatherbell.com/tropical.php, 2nd figure: globally, ACE is well above average, there were a record number of major hurricanes globally in 2015. Pretty much the opposite of being at a 45 year low.
