Scientists Debunk Study Eliminating Global Warming ‘Hiatus’

A new paper put out by a group of scientists — including Michael Mann of “hockey stick” curve fame — has debunked a controversial National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report from last year claiming global warming has accelerated faster than surface temperature readings have shown.

“Overall, there is compelling evidence that there has been a temporary slowdown in observed global surface warming,” Ed Hawkins, a climate scientist at the University of Reading and co-author of the paper, wrote in a blog post on the new research.

Hawkins noted that “the most recent observed 15-year trends are all positive, but lower than most previous similar trends in the past few decades” which is a  “clear demonstration that the rate of change has slowed since its peak.”

Doublespeak: EPA Chief ‘respects’ Supreme Court stay ‘but, we will keep moving the Clean Power Plan’

Stating that the Agency will abide by the Supreme Court stay, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says, “but, we will keep moving the Clean Power Plan forward… we’ll keep moving forward with things like the model rule and the CEIP.” EPA’s “model rule” will serve as the Federal Implementation Plan (FIP) for those states that oppose and refuse to submit a plan under the regulation. EPA’s website says the CEIP (Clean Energy Investment Program) is an option for states “to incentivize early investments in wind and solar power generation.”

Despite the legal suit of 28 states in opposition to the Clean Power Plan, McCarthy says, “States want it. States like it.”

ADMINISTRATOR GINA MCCARTHY: “I have every respect for the Supreme Court and their decision, and we will keep abiding by that faithfully, but we will keep moving the Clean Power Plan forward. States want it. States like it. They’re going to continue to move. So, we’ll be working with those voluntary– those states and those voluntary actions, and we’ll keep moving forward with things like the model rule and the CEIP so that we can hit the ground running when the merits argument is completed and we have succeeded in defending this rule.”

NASA Scientist: Earth’s ‘temperature doesn’t change dramatically, even with greenhouse effects’

Liming Li, an assistant professor of physics in the UH College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, is leading a team of scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the University of Wisconsin-Madison to analyze data collected by instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft, which is on a mission to explore Saturn’s systems. Through two new projects awarded by NASA’s Planetary Science Division and funded for $709,000, Li and his team have the opportunity to study data collected aboard Cassini as it relates to climate. An international mission, Cassini is supported by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.…

Pure Symbolism: EPA Chief: ‘We don’t have to prove that any reduction’ in CO2 makes a difference in ‘global warming’

Responding to the contention that if all Canadian oil sands production were stopped today it would only reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by one-tenth of one percent, EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy says it doesn’t matter that it wouldn’t make a difference. McCarthy: “You know what? We had that argument at the Supreme Court and we won decisively… We don’t have to prove that any reduction in and of itself will actually make a precipitous difference”.

REPORTER: “It’s one-tenth of one percent of global emissions. If production in the oil sands stopped today, it wouldn’t make a difference.”

ADMINISTRATOR GINA MCCARTHY: “You know what? You would do that with every single source of greenhouse gases, and we had that argument at the Supreme Court, and we won decisively. Which was that we don’t need to prove that every single source is going to stop greenhouse gas emissions, but if the attitude is that that’s the challenge for us, we will never stop global warming. We will never stop climate change. And, so that has just never been the case for EPA. We don’t have to prove that any reduction will actually make a precipitous difference in and of itself, but we have to admit that there is a lot of efforts need to be done to get at this issue, and it is that combined effort. But, every step, the first step– this is a marathon, and if you don’t take the first step, you ain’t getting nowhere baby.”
