U.S. Summer Chill: NOAA – 1025 Cold Records Broken From Aug 1 to Aug 21. Some records Smashed by 16F

1025 Low Max Records Broken From Aug 1 to Aug 21 according to the NOAA.

A “Low Max” means that the maximum temperatures for the day was the lowest it has ever been.

This indicates daytime cooling.

Below is a screenshot showing location and the biggest difference between old record and new record.

Note that Dyer NV has 111 years of data. And the record was smashed by 16F.

Plus, there have been new snowfall records, almost unheard of in summer. See the table: Source: http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/datatools/records Daily records  Tmax=368  Tmin =1072 Monthly records Tmax=6 Tmin= 17 3 new snow records. I had noted earlier this year that the data feed from NCDC that allowed independent plotting of high/low temperature records has suddenly disappeared. HAMweather […]…

It was not long ago that we were bombarded with claims of record high temperatures in the US. For instance, PBS introduced their new widget in 2011, shown above, to track daily records.
As they pointed out:
We’ve built this widget so our viewers can understand the significance of the heat, not only in terms of raw degrees, but in a format that compares today’s temperatures to previous record highs.

As of last September, it was still running. (Not that they cared to show record daily lows as well!)
Given the unusually cold weather experienced in much of the States this year, it will probably come as no surprise to find that PBS have now pulled their widget.

And it’s not only PBS.

HAMweather have been running this map of record events for at least the last 14 years.

http://wx.hamweather.com/maps/climate/records/2014/02/03/us.html?cat=maxtemp,mintemp,rain,snow,lowmax,highmin,

Yet, mysteriously, since February NCDC appear to have yanked the data feed, as they been showing no new records recently.

We know this is not the case, as NOAA have been showing low temperature records vastly outnumbering highs throughout this year. The chart below is tucked away on their website, where it is not easy to find.

Nowhere have records been falling faster than in Antarctica. And what is shocking is that these records are all tied to cooling – and not warming.
Antarctica has been setting new maximum sea ice records almost daily, and never has Antarctic sea ice been so high for so long since satellite measurements began some 35 years ago. Sea ice anomaly has averaged over 1 million square kilometers for over one year.

Figure 1: Antarctic sea ice anomaly. The mean of the past three decades has been rising for 30 years. Approximate mean bars added by author. Source: arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu
Almost daily observers of southern hemispheric sea ice have been hearing of a new record for ice extent for the date. The overall trend is not something that can be regarded as a recent anomaliy attributed to natural weather-like variability. Rather it really has to do with multidecadal trends that are unrelated to manmade CO2 emissions.
Iciest Antarctic decade ever
Figure 1 above shows how each south polar decade is icier than the one before. There is only one reason for this: There is less and less heat down there to prevent ice from forming, which seems to squarely contradict claims of a warming that is global.
In total the global (Arctic and Antarctic combined) sea ice mean for the last one and half years has been above the long-term mean. Scientists are scrambling to find out what has gone wrong with their model calculations. It wasn’t supposed to be so.
Figure 1 also shows how Antarctic sea ice has remained steadfastly above normal for more than two and half years, something that has never happened since satellite measurements began. Moreover, Anthony Watts here writes: “We are now on day 1001 of positive anomaly based on the 1979-2008 baseline.” Scientists who have long claimed the globe is warming are baffled and a few are even so shocked that they are denying it altogether.

2014 for Antarctica has been especially icy. Figure 2 below shows how 2014 daily sea ice extent, depicted by the bold red curve, has been setting new record daily highs for the last 5 months.

Did Greenland & W Antarctic Ice Sheet Loss Suddenly Double?

According to the IPCC, the Greenland + Antarctic ice sheets contain a total of 27.6 x 10^6 cubic km of ice, equivalent to 63.9 meters sea level rise. If this paper is correct, the combined ice sheets are losing 503/27600000 or 0.0018% of their mass per year, equivalent to 1.16 mm/yr sea level rise or 4.5 inches per century, hardly alarming, and almost exactly what the IPCC 2013 report claimed for the sea level rise contribution of 0.6 mm/yr from Greenland and 0.41 mm/yr from Antarctica, a total of 1.01 mm/yr.

Further, if there was an actual doubling of ice loss from Greenland and Antarctica, that should have been found in a corresponding acceleration of sea level rise. No such acceleration has been found and Cazenave et al and Chen et al have instead found a recent deceleration of sea level rise, the opposite of what would be expected if the ice sheets had accelerated ice loss. In addition, worldwide glacier melt has decelerated since 1950, also the opposite of predictions of AGW theory.

No

Joe Romm and other alarmist news sources are gushing over a new paper published in the Cryosphere which they claim shows

World’s Largest Ice Sheets Melting at Fastest Rates in Recorded History!

Greenland And West Antarctic Ice Sheet Loss More Than Doubled In Last Five Years

But what does the paper actually show? The paper compares ice volume changes between three different satellite altimetry databases. As the authors note, one must be very careful about drawing conclusions in comparing databases from different measurement sources and which use different analysis methods. In this case, the CryoSat satellite database only covers a very short 2011-early 2014 time period of a little over 3 years and does not overlap the ICESat database from 2003-2009 or the IMBIE database from 2003-2008. Therefore, the CryoSat database cannot be directly calibrated against the other two databases and comparisons must be done with caution.

Table 4 shows the following volume changes in cubic kilometers/year of the Greenland + Antarctic ice sheets from the 3 datasets and time periods:

IMBIE:   2003-2008  -164
ICESat:   2003-2009  -207
CryoSat:  2011-2014  -503

and does show an increase in volume loss of 296 km^3yr-1 between the 2003-2009 ICESat database and the short 2011-2014 CryoSat database. Regardless of all the caveats of comparing these short, non-overlapping datasets, if …
