UN IPCC Lead Author Oppenheimer: Barbra Streisand gave me quarter of a million dollars — ‘So what?’

Remarks begin about 29 minute mark:

New York Times journalist Andrew Revkin asked Prof. Michael Oppenheimer about his association with Environmental Defense Fund and his advocacy role as a scientist during a March 30, 2015 streaming interview at Pace University.

Oppenheimer responded: “I have been attacked plenty, but we are all…People who want to disagree with me, they will say things like I worked for EDF…Barbra Streisand, once gave EDF a few hundred thousand to support my work, and then it’s like so what?” — “It’s very hard to catch me saying something that is wrong, because I don’t.”

Climate Depot Response: ‘So what?’ That is the point. All scientists have biases — both personal, professional and funding —  to some extent. Why does the media and the climate establishment act like it is only skeptical scientists that should be placed under funding scrutiny?

Despite his own well-funded activist background, Oppenheimer, has a history of smearing skeptics as having a “financial interest” in promoting skepticism. In 2006, Oppenheimer told Tom Brokaw that many skeptics had a “financial interest” in the status quo and therefore reject man-made global warming claims.

Oppenheimer has the audacity — despite having drawn nice salaries from Environmental Defense – to tell the media that skeptics are all in the pay of big oil. See: Climate Cash: Enviro Activist Michael Oppenheimer of EDF wins 2010 greenie Heinz Awards (Each Heinz Award recipient receives $100,000!)

Streisand admitted: ‘I, and others have spent countless millions on this issue’ – She funded UN IPCC Lead Author to tune of $250,000

Reality Check: Streisand admitted key climate role and gave at least a quarter of a million dollars to fund the climate activism of a lead author of the UN IPCC.

Scientist to the Hollywood Stars: UN IPCC Lead Author Michael Oppenheimer ‘was the holder of the ‘Barbra Streisand Chair of Environmental Studies’ at Environmental Defense Fund’

Streisand: ‘My Foundation started supporting climate change work in 1989, when I donated a quarter of a million dollars to support the work of environmental scientist Dr. Michael Oppenheimer at EDF. Since then, I, and others have spent countless millions on this issue.’

The green group, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) hosted the Barbra Streisand Chair of Environmental Studies, the perch of UN IPCC lead author Michael Oppenheimer, a media favorite.

Oppenheimer, a professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton, was a paid partisan of the environmental pressure group Environmental Defense. And Oppenheimer was the holder of the “Barbra Streisand Chair of Environmental Studies” at the Environmental Defense Fund.

We’ve got to get serious about investing in solutions to this serious threat before it gets any worse’ — ‘My Foundation started supporting climate change work in 1989, when I donated a quarter of a million dollars to support the work of environmental scientist Dr. Michael Oppenheimer at EDF. Since then, I, and others have spent countless millions on this issue’

  1. Why then should anyone complain if another scientist gets money from the Koch Foundation? How is Barbra Streisand any better than Koch Bros? She has no education beyond high school for starters. Both Koch Bros are MIT graduates.

    1. That news isn’t getting enough press, but here’s another source.

The Texas Town That Just Quit Fossil Fuels

“More and more, large entities in North America are deciding they no longer want to use fossil fuels like coal to generate electricity. They’ve decided the cost and the externalities—poor air quality, bad publicity, health issues—just aren’t worth it. And so they’re rejiggering their electricity supplies to depend heavily on renewables and other lower-emissions sources. Those taking the plunge include the Canadian province of Ontario, progressive towns like Palo Alto, California, and image-conscious Fortune 500 companies like Walmart, which is now nearly one-fourth of the way toward its stated goal of getting 100 percent of its global electricity supplies from renewable sources.

Now this movement has spread to another unlikely place: deep in the heart of Texas.

Last week Georgetown, Texas, a town of about 50,000 about 30 miles north of Austin (and the home of Nolan Ryan) announced that the utility that it owns, Georgetown Utility Systems, would soon get 100 percent of the electricity it provides from renewables.* How? At the beginning of last year, Georgetown made a deal with EDF Renewable Energy to acquire about 75 percent of the output of the 194-megawatt Spinning Spur 3 wind farm, now under construction in West Texas, for 20 years. That accounts for about half of the utility’s needs. Last week it announced it would purchase the output of two large solar plants, with a combined capacity of 150 megawatts, that Sun Edison will build in West Texas, for 25 years. That’ll cover the rest, ensuring the 104-year-old utility at least 20 years of emissions-free electricity.” http://www.slate.com/articles/business/the_juice/2015/03/georgetown_texas_goes_renewable_why_the_town_is_dropping_fossil_fuels_for.html

  2. “The only hope for the world is to make sure there is not another United States. We can’t let other countries have the same number of cars, the amount of industrialization we have in the US. We have to stop these Third World countries right where they are.” …..-Michael Oppenheimer, Environmental Defense Fund

And Streisand gave money to this schmuck. She should be ashamed of herself.

    1. An FYI: This ‘quote’ is from a ’92 Heritage Foundation publication. An interview with Rush Limbaugh. Who says that is what Oppenheimer says. He only partially cites where and when it purportedly was said and part of the quote above is not cited by R.L. as Oppenheimer’s words but are from Rush, then whoever pulled the ‘quote’ added Rush’s words to what Rush said Oppenheimer said.

So, we have an uncited ‘quote’ . An erroneous quote. A ‘quote’ that gets posted to conservative webpages because it sounds good to the readers’ ears. Basically, another example of confirmation bias.

BTW, The pub is available through your public library – yes, that paid for by your tax dollars public library – rather than just copy pasting, one should verify that the quotes are accurate. It would make the case look better when one cites what informed their thinking.
