Bill Nye heading to Netflix to ‘take on climate change deniers’

Bill Nye is heading to Netflix to take on climate change deniers — with help from a supermodel.

Nye first found television fame in the ’90s with his weekly children’s show on PBS. Now, he’s returning to the small screen — or, at least, the streaming device — with Bill Nye Saves the World, a Netflix series set to debut this spring.

“Each episode will tackle a topic from a scientific point of view,” Nye said in a statement, “dispelling myths, and refuting anti-scientific claims that may be espoused by politicians, religious leaders, or titans of industry.” Those topics include some hot-button issues, like vaccinations, genetically modified foods, and climate change.

Though he got his start on an uncontroversial kids’ show, in recent years Nye has not shied away from contentious issues. He’s been an especially outspoken critic of climate change deniers. Last year, he bet notorious denier Marc Marano $20,000 that 2016 would be one of the 10 hottest years on record. Morano declined the offer — which, considering the data, was probably wise. Nye will get some help on his new show from special correspondents like Karlie Kloss. “We’ll be talking about every nerdy thing you can dream of,” says the model.

Bill Nye the Science Guy’s old TV sidekick is a climate skeptic – Laments Nye does not tolerate dissent – ‘I don’t think he’d let me on his show now’

http://mynorthwest.com/382851/dori-is-not-expecting-to-resume-role-for-bill-nye-the-science-guy/

It’s a good thing KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson has a plan for life after radio because he’s doubtful that an invitation to reprise his role on the new Bill Nye the Science Guy show is on its way.

Dori launched his acting career on the legendary kids show more than 20 years ago, appearing on several episodes as sportscaster Lance Yardstick. He played the sidekick to former fellow KING-TV personality Pat Cashman, who played Timmy Ticker.

…

Since Dori, a climate-change skeptic, does not exactly see eye-to-eye with some of Nye’s stances, he’s not holding his breath for a call.

“Bill was very, very good to me when I did all those episodes of his show, but, boy, if somebody questions global warming these days …” Dori said. “I don’t think he’d let me on his show now in 2016. I’ve burned every bridge there is.”…

Bill Nye, ‘The Science Guy,’ admits climate ‘deniers’ have been ‘surprisingly successful’

Mr. Nye, who was interviewed Monday on his role as an ambassador for the National Park Service’s 100th birthday, was promptly challenged by Climate Depot’s Marc Morano, who disputed the allegation that climate skeptics are doing the bidding of the oil-and-gas industry.

Nye’s claims of skeptics being almost exclusively funded by fossil fuels are flat-out wrong,” Mr. Morano said. “It is the environmental left that frequently enjoys amounts of fossil-fuel funding that skeptics never see.”

For example, he cited a 2014 report from the Science and Environmental Policy Project that found total U.S. expenditures on climate change from Fiscal Year 1993 to Fiscal Year 2033 exceeded $165 billion, primarily for climate models and efforts to mitigate global warming.

“These entities have a vested interest in promoting the fear of global warming/climate change,” the SEPP report said.…

‘Bill Nye Isn’t a Scientist — He Just Plays One on TV’

by IAN TUTTLE August 25, 2016 4:00 AM

For Nye, science is a weapon wielded to advance a certain type of politics. Bill Nye — “the Science Guy” — thinks that the recent deadly flooding in Louisiana is a result of climate change. That’s not surprising. Bill Nye thinks everything is the result of climate change. Flooding in Missouri is climate change. Tornadoes in Kentucky is climate change. Fire in Alaska is climate change. A morning thunderstorm in Houston is climate change. One time, there was a blizzard in New York in January. That was climate change, too. The event doesn’t even have to be weather-related. The Islamic State’s massacre of 130 people in Paris last year? You guessed it. When it comes to Bill Nye “the Science Guy,” it’s almost like “science” has nothing to do with it. That would not be particularly surprising, either. After all, William Sanford Nye’s scientific bona fides consists of an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell, and a stint at Boeing. But you can be anything you want on television, and in the late 1980s, hard at work pursuing a career in comedy, Nye landed a recurring bit as Bill Nye “the Science Guy” on Almost Live!, a Seattle-area sketch-comedy television show, and a role as Christopher Lloyd’s laboratory sidekick on Back to the Future: The Animated Series. Nye then leveraged that success into his namesake PBS Kids show, Bill Nye the Science Guy, which from 1993 to 1998 filmed 100 half-hour episodes, each focused on a particular topic (dinosaurs, buoyancy, germs, &c.) and accompanied by a parody soundtrack (e.g., Episode 75, on invertebrates: “Crawl Away,” by “S. Khar Go” — a parody of “Runaway” by Janet Jackson). Somehow, because of this, Nye is now the go-to authority on exoplanets and dark matter and whether we are living in a computer simulation — and, of course, environmental policy.

Bill Nye Laments climate debate: ‘The deniers have been very successful — surprisingly successful’

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/bill-nye-national-parks-climate-change-2016-election/

CBS News: How come environmental causes — climate change, specifically — have not been brought to the forefront of political debate this year? Domestic, international, and economic issues are at the center, but we really aren’t talking about the environment this cycle. Why is that?
Well, first of all, I’m not telling anyone who to vote for. In my opinion, it’s all due to who I call “the deniers.” The deniers have been very successful — surprisingly successful — because they are almost exclusively funded by the fossil fuel industry. So this whole anti-science movement has been set up to preserve an economy that is going away. The rest of the world is moving away from fossil fuels in order to do business, but not the United States. You know, I, as an engineer, as a citizen by birth, as a patriot — I would prefer that the United States was leading the world in renewable energy. I’d prefer the United States to be leading, but the deniers have been able to influence the power brokers so successfully. The United States has hardly done anything to counteract that. The U.S. has just scratched the surface.

…

Depending on whether Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton wins the election, how do you see this changing? Will it change?

If the election goes to the candidate who is in favor of addressing climate change and preserving the environment it will move in one way, but if it goes the other way, it will be very difficult — it will lower the quality of life for billions of people. Unites States has to be a world leader when it comes to the environment.…

Scientists slam Bill Nye: He ‘has dangerously misled the whole generation of younger minds’

Popular personalities like Mr. Bill Nye have had all the attention of the microphones, loudspeakers, and print media, and he has dangerously misled the whole generation of unsuspected readers and younger minds. As scientists, it is our duty to denounce such an attitude, to stop scientism and to warn everyone that personalities like Mr. Nye are plainly anti-science and, therefore, will harm us all.

Willie Soon is an independent scientist who has been studying the Sun and Earth climate for the past 26 years. István Markó is a professor of chemistry at the Université catholique de Louvain and director of the Organic and Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory.

UK Daily Mail: ‘A pretend scientist in a bow tie’: ‘Climate denying Weather Channel founder SLAMS Bill Nye for criticizing skeptical film ‘Climate Hustle’

The film, marketed with the tagline ‘Are they trying to control the climate… or you?’ suggests that man-made global warming is a hoax.

Its website says that an ‘overheated environmental con job [is] being used to push for increased government regulations and a new “Green” energy agenda.’

Nye, a children’s TV host who has made a career out of presenting science-themed shows, is highly critical of climate change deniers.

When asked by the filmmakers whether climate-change deniers should be jailed, Nye replied, ‘Well, we’ll see what happens. Was it appropriate to jail the guys from ENRON?’

He continued: ‘Was it appropriate to jail people from the cigarette industry who insisted that this addictive product was not addictive and so on?’

Weather Channel Founder Slams Bill Nye: Calls him ‘a pretend scientist in a bow tie’

Weather Channel Founder John Coleman, a meteorologist for over six decades, slammed Bill Nye, ‘the science guy’ for saying that the new skeptical global warming film ‘Climate Hustle’ is “very much not in our national interest and the world’s interest.

Coleman is featured introducing ‘Climate Hustle’ in theatres on May 2 for the one-night only showing.  www.ClimateHustle.com Nye is also featured in the panel discussion that follows the skeptical film in theatres on May 2.

“I have always been amazed that anyone would pay attention to Bill Nye, a pretend scientist in a bow tie,” Coleman said today.

“As a man who has studied the science of meteorology for over 60 years and received the AMS (American Meteorological Society’s) ‘Meteorologist of the Year’ award, I am totally offended that Nye gets the press and media attention he does. And I am rooting for the ‘Climate Hustle’ film to become a huge hit — bigger than ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ by Al Gore,” Coleman explained.

Coleman was the original meteorologist on ABC’s Good Morning America.

Coleman also ripped Nye for suggesting climate skeptics should face jail time for their dissenting views.

“That this the most awful thing since Galileo was jailed for saying the Earth was not the center of the Universe,” Coleman said.

“In 20 or 30 years, when Nye is an old man, he will realize how wrong he was as the Earth continue to be a just a great place to live,” Coleman added.
