MIT climate scientist warns ‘global warming’ fears ‘indoctrinating a generation of young people with foolishness’
WORCESTER – Arctic ice, rising sea levels, and polar bears were the stuff of spirited discussion over bagels and lox Sunday morning at Central Mass. Chabad.
Atmospheric physicist Richard S. Lindzen, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor Emeritus of Meteorology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an eminent dissenter from the popular consensus that climate change poses a significant threat to the planet, spoke at a breakfast at the Jewish center at 22 Newton Ave.
Mr. Lindzen’s topic: “Global Warming or Climate Alarmism?” He argued the latter.
While headlines blare “the world is coming to end,” Mr. Lindzen said, that is not happening. A “totally insignificant spike” in temperature of a tenth of a degree last year led to reports that 2016 was the “warmest year on record,” he said. He showed graphs of temperatures over centuries that he said showed fluctuations in temperature are normal.
“The relationship of modest warming to coming catastrophe are blatantly false,” said Mr. Lindzen, who warned against “indoctrinating a generation of young people with foolishness.”
The seas have been rising for 10,000 years, he said. Climate change is cyclical and natural, and the amount of carbon dioxide added to the atmosphere by human activity from the Industrial Revolution to the the present day is arguable, he maintained. Climate “hysteria” is being fed in the cause of a malicious “war on energy” by propagandists of the environmental Left who “want any source of energy as long as it doesn’t work,” he said.
He quoted H.L. Mencken: “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed and hence clamorous to be led to safety from an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.” The time has come to “put the brakes on” climate change alarmism, he said.
“So what are they saying this for?” asked Rabbi Fishman. “To scare you!” exclaimed Mr. Lindzen.

Prominent Scientist Tells Congress: Earth in ‘CO2 Famine’
‘The increase of CO2 is not a cause for alarm and will be good for mankind’
‘Children should not be force-fed propaganda, masquerading as science’
Washington, DC — Award-winning Princeton University Physicist Dr. Will Happer declared man-made global warming fears “mistaken” and noted that the Earth was currently in a “CO2 famine now.” Happer, who has published over 200 peer-reviewed scientific papers, made his remarks during today’s Environment and Public Works Full Committee Hearing entitled “Update on the Latest Global Warming Science.”
“Many people don’t realize that over geological time, we’re really in a CO2 famine now. Almost never has CO2 levels been as low as it has been in the Holocene (geologic epoch) – 280 (parts per million – ppm) – that’s unheard of. Most of the time [CO2 levels] have been at least 1000 (ppm) and it’s been quite higher than that,” Happer told the Senate Committee. “Earth was just fine in those times,” Happer added. “The oceans were fine, plants grew, animals grew fine. So it’s baffling to me that we’re so frightened of getting nowhere close to where we started,” Happer explained. Happer also noted that “the number of [skeptical scientists] with the courage to speak out is growing” and he warned “children should not be force-fed propaganda, masquerading as science.” [In December, Happer requested to be added to the groundbreaking U.S. Senate Minority Report Update: More Than 650 International Scientists Dissent Over Man-Made Global Warming Claims ]
Happer was pressed by the Committee on whether rising CO2 fears are valid. “I don’t think the laws of nature or physics and chemistry has changed in 80 million years. 80 million years ago the Earth was a very prosperous palace and there is no reason to suddenly think it will become bad now,” Happer added.Happer is a professor in the Department of Physics at Princeton University and …
A Seattle judge has ruled this week eight teenagers can sue the #Government for not doing more to fight #Climate Change. King County Superior Court Judge Hollis Hill said the plaintiffs, ages 12 to 16, can have their day in court, writing in her ruling that “it is time for these youth to have the opportunity to address their concerns in a court of law…” Because none are old enough to vote, the lawsuit allows them to bypass the legislative branch by using the courts.
The children had wanted the judge to find the Department of Ecology (DOE) negligent in failing to protect them and future generations from global warming. Judge Hill noted the DOE had complied with the Clean Air Rule in the time frame set by the court and she denied their request. She did, however, allow the adolescents to amend their lawsuit so they could sue Gov. Inslee and the state of Washington for violating the public trust doctrine and constitution.
Inalienable climate rights
Hill said the petitioners have a right to force Washington state to use science-based action to fight climate change before it’s too late or costly. Andrea Rodgers, an environmental lawyer representing the children, said this means they can go to court and argue their constitutional rights had been violated. Rodgers said the actions currently taken by the state are not lowering emissions as required by state law. The governor and state legislature dispute that claim.
This isn’t the first time youths have joined forces and sued over climate inaction. Last month a federal judge in Eugene, Oregon, said a similar climate change case against President #Obama could move ahead. In that complaint, kids aged 9 to 20 said the government had violated their constitutional “climate” rights to “life, liberty, and property.” The self-described “Earth Guardians” don’t believe the federal government is doing enough to
SEATTLE (AP) — Eight children asked a Seattle judge Tuesday to find Washington state in contempt for failing to adequately protect them and future generations from the harmful effects of climate change, part of a nationwide effort by young people to try to force action on global warming.
The petitioners, between 12 and 16 years old, asked a state judge to step in and require the state Department of Ecology to come up with science-based numeric emissions reductions.
The state argued that it has complied with the court’s prior orders and there’s no basis for finding the Department of Ecology in contempt.
After hearing arguments Tuesday afternoon, King County Superior Court Judge Hollis Hill said she needed more time and would rule at a later date.
The case is part of a nationwide effort led by the Oregon-based nonprofit Our Children’s Trust to force states and the federal government to take action on climate change.
This month, a federal judge in Eugene, Oregon, allowed a similar climate change case against President Barack Obama’s administration to proceed. In that lawsuit, 21 activists ages 9 to 20 argue that the federal government’s actions violate their constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property, and the government has violated its obligation to hold certain natural resources in trust for future generations.…
The Weather Channel video uses young kids to promote ‘global warming’ fears – ‘Dear Mom & Dad, climate change could be very catastrophic’
Kids: ‘Dear Mom and Dad: ‘The science is clear’
‘This is about our families health’
‘Climate change is real, it’s bad and it’s caused by humans.’
‘97% of scientists agree that global warming started decades ago.’
‘Dear Mom and Dad, science says that the impact of climate change could be very catastrophic during my lifetime.’
‘Rising sea levels would displace millions.’
‘A major threat to national security.’
Climate Depot Note: All of these climate change claims put forth by the kids (and the adults) are easily debunked. Here is Climate Depot’s official climate talking points file, just released. CLIMATE TRUTH FILE: 2016: Skeptical Talking Points from A-Z on Global Warming – Point-By-Point
And all of these climate claims are addressed in the new skeptical film ‘Climate Hustle’ out on DVD now. www.ClimateHustle.com
Update: Weather Channel Founder John Coleman rips his old network for ‘immoral’ kids video: “Right or wrong, using children to promote a point of view boarders on immoral. Even knowing that climate change is not happening, it is far beneath my values to use children to promote this truth,” Coleman said in an exclusive interview with Climate Depot.
Coleman continued: “The people who produced this video may believe that man-made climate change is underway and that the future of life on Earth is in the balance. They may feel the use of children to warn us about this is totally appropriate. If the people who produced this video don’t know if man-made climate change is actually happening, but their income from government funding depends on it, so they come up with the idea of using children to make an emotional appeal, this would be shameful and border on abuse.
I do not know which of the above situations is valid, but….
I know without a doubt that there is no significant threat to the future climate of Earth from the industrialized civilization we have created and the drastic climate changes predicted by the Al Gore clan and the
Latest ‘Global Warming’ Threat: Trick Or Treating – ‘Pre-packaged sugar packs a big punch to your carbon footprint’
Environmentalists have decided that letting kids trick or treat on Halloween is increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and the only solution is for the activists to get more money to fight it.
Environmentalists suspect that candy eaten by trick-or-treating kids probably generates a lot of CO2 and therefore isn’t sustainable. The environmental website TerraPass even encourages parents to “start a new trend and skip the candy handouts, opting for more sustainable treats as a greener way of participating in the festivities. Instead of candy coated, sugary bites, offer up little storybooks, crayons, playing cards or toys.”
TerraPass claims Halloween isn’t an eco-friendly holiday because “pre-packaged sugar packs a big punch with respect to your carbon footprint” and that plastic wrappers of the candy were likely shipped over great distances, adding to the amount of CO2. The group claims that 6 ounces of CO2 are emitted for every milk chocolate bar produced, but that you can buy down your guilt by paying them money.
“It can be difficult to resist the temptation of those yummy, pumpkin-shaped Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups,” TerraPass continues. “Fortunately, you can cancel out the carbon footprint of your favorite candies by purchasing Carbon Offsets from TerraPass. Offsets reduce your environmental footprint and support emission reduction projects that make a lasting difference.”

The New York Times published an article by the Thomson Reuters Foundation (TRF) Tuesday claiming global warming could cause more child marriages and sexual abuse in third world cities.
Brishti Rafiq’s father brought her to live in Dhaka, Bangladesh when she was a little girl after floods washed away her river-front home. It wasn’t long before her father forced her into an arranged marriage.
Bristhi opposed the marriage, and it eventually fell through after it was discovered her husband-to-be already had a wife. But TRF reported it was just one case of a big problem in Dhaka, and one that could be made worse by global warming.
Experts “fear that growing migration to already overcrowded Dhaka, as climate change pressures exacerbate poverty, could result in a new surge in child marriages,” TRF reported in NYT.
“Early marriage not only deprives girls of education and opportunities but increases their risk of death or severe childbirth injuries if they have babies before their bodies are ready,” TRF reported.
“The flood of rural families moving to Dhaka’s slums is growing as people lose their homes, farms and jobs to riverbank erosion and climate change pressures, such as worsening floods and droughts and more intense storms,” TRF added.
TFR noted that child marriages have decreased in recent years, from 29 percent of girls married by age 15 to just 18 percent. That’s despite Bangladesh banning marriage before the age of 18.
