Climate Change Makes Better Wine: ‘Scientists have discovered climate change may actually be making wine taste better’

Climate Change Makes Better Wine

http://sunshinehours.net/2016/03/24/climate-change-makes-better-wine

Good news on the climate front! The doom and gloom surrounding global warming tends to offer a depressing picture of the future, but there may be a small glimmer of hope. Scientists have discovered climate change may actually be making wine taste better. They have found the conditions typically associated with high-quality wines have altered in recent years as temperatures have risen, resulting in consistently better vintages. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3507836/Is-climate-change-making-wine-taste-BETTER-Rising-temperatures-causing-early-harvests-high-quality-vintages.html I usually laugh at these stories when they show the opposite. So I’m going to highlight 2 things. CO2 is never mentioned in the story. Yet its easy to find research showing higher CO2 increases grape yields. Their “temperature reconstruction” splices 100 years of thermometer data onto 300 years of tree ring data (which they claim tells you what the temperature and precipitation is).Thats pretty bogus “science”.

Latest Nonsense: Climate Change To Lead To Fruit & Veg Shortage

By Paul Homewood h/t Tom0Mason http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/climatechange/12181496/Climate-change-Global-warming-fruit-and-veg-shortage-could-lead-to-1200-extra-UK-deaths-a-year-by-2050.html Dear little Emily is on form again today in the Telegraph: Climate change could lead to more than 1,200 extra deaths a year in the UK by 2050 as global warming causes fruit and vegetable shortages, new research suggests. The typical British diet will deteriorate as the effects of climate change hit crop production, resulting in supply shortages and pushing up prices, Oxford University researchers said. This will increase the number of deaths for which poor diet is a risk factor – more than offsetting a reduction in deaths from obesity that may be seen as the effects of global warming push up food prices, they warn. Deaths will increase due to poor diets Photo: Getty Dr Marco Springmann from the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food, said: “You could expect in the UK the reduction in fruit and vegetable consumption would be the number one risk factor. “The immediate cause of the reduction in fruit and vegetable consumption are the climatic shocks: basically, less can be grown, that leads to farmers probably using more land, and also the prices go up. “As a combination of less production and higher prices there will be a reduction in the consumption.” In a report, the researchers estimate that overall, more than 500,000 extra adult deaths could be caused globally in 2050 due to the impact of climate change on diets. The reduction in fruit and vegetable consumption is expected to be the primary killer, accounting for 534,000 extra deaths. This will be only slightly offset by 29,000 fewer deaths from lower red meat consumption. Rising food prices will result in about 266,000 more people dying due to being underweight – but this will almost be cancelled out by 260,000 fewer deaths from obesity, it finds. The report forecasts that overall the UK will see extra 25 adult deaths per million people as a result of the “effect of climate change on food production”. This implies more than 1,200 deaths a year, based on the current UK adult population of more than 50 million people. Dr Springmann said the study showed climate change would have a “substantial negative impact on future mortality, even under optimistic scenarios” and said governments should scale up public health programmes. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/earth/environment/climatechange/12181496/Climate-change-Global-warming-fruit-and-veg-shortage-could-lead-to-1200-extra-UK-deaths-a-year-by-2050.html Perhaps someone needs to tell her global …

NOAA worries about impact of ‘climate change’ on Valentines Day – Federal science agency frets about how chocolate ‘is affected by climate’

Washington DC – The federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is officially on record this Valentines Day as worrying about the future of Valentines Day around the world. NOAA send out a tweet and posted an article on NOAA’s “Climate.gov” website fretting about “climate and chocolate.”

NOAA asked: “Is chocolate your favorite Valentines Day treat? See how it is affected by climate.”

According to NOAA: “Chocolate grows best in the places where it would quickly melt in your hands. Over the next several decades, those places may grow warmer, drier, and less suitable to cacao cultivation. But with planning and adaptation, cacao farmers can keep producing our favorite treat.” (Feb. 10, 2016)

NOAA continued: “Research highlighted in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability report indicates that, under a “business as usual” scenario, those countries will experience a 3.8°F (2.1°C) increase in temperature by 2050, and a marked reduction in suitable cultivation area.” (Climate Depot note: It appears NOAA is ignoring the current satellite data which shows global temperatures at a standstill for nearly 19 years. See: Satellites: No global warming at all for 18 years 8 months )

The federal agency went on to address “helping chocolate cope with climate change.”

NOAA explained: “One adaptation strategy could be providing cacao growers with selectively bred seeds that have superior drought resistance. Another strategy involves a traditional cacao cultivation method that takes advantage of the conditions under which cacao naturally grows.”

The news that a federal science agency was dedicated to saving Valentines Day did not go over well with climate skeptics.

Steve Milloy of JunkScience.com wrote: “So Obama wants $4 trillion to fund the federal government to do nonsense like this?”

Climate Depot Note: “It’s hard to believe that the federal goverenment can predict the effects of “cliamte change on chocolate and save it when it can’t seem to figure out sea level rise. See: Flashback 1987: ‘Global Warming’ Causes Sea Levels to Fall — 2016: ‘Global Warming’ Causes Slowdown In Sea Level Rise – “Settled Science: Global warming causes sea levels to rise — oops — fall, er slowdown?  Whatever!”

Study: ‘World’s first farmers & their slash-and-burn agriculture (7000 years ago) may have set off global warming’

A new analysis of ice-core climate data, archaeological evidence and ancient pollen samples is being used to suggest farming some 7,000 years ago helped put the brakes on a natural cooling process of the global climate, possibly contributing the warmer climate seen today.

But the study is expected to raise a few eyebrows, given there were far fewer people on Earth back then and industrialization — and the coal-fired power plants that come with it — was still a long ways off.

A study was the work of an international team led by William Ruddiman, a University of Virginia climate scientist, who first grabbed attention a dozen years ago with a controversial theory that humans altered the climate by burning massive areas of forests to clear the way for crops and livestock grazing. Dubbed the “early anthropogenic hypothesis,” Ruddiman and his colleagues found that that carbon dioxide levels rose beginning 7,000 years ago, and methane began rising 5,000 years ago.

‘Climatarian’ Makes New York Times List of Top New Food Words for 2015

Via: http://ecowatch.com/2015/12/22/what-is-a-climatarian/

The New York Times published its list of the top new food words for 2015. Words and phrases that made this year’s list range from “beer o’clock,” one’s personal assessment of the right time of day to start drinking, to “hangry,” the state of being so hungry that you become angry or irritable.

But, the one word most relevant to the environmentally conscious is “climatarian.” The New York Times defines it as “a diet whose primary goal is to reverse climate change. This includes eating locally produced food (to reduce energy spent in transportation), choosing pork and poultry instead of beef and lamb (to limit gas emissions) and using every part of ingredients (apple cores, cheese rinds, etc.) to limit food waste.”

The word gained popularity this year in part because it was promoted by a group calledClimates (yes, the organization’s official name is formally half-bold). They encourage people to “go climatarian” and save a tonne (1.1 short tons) of carbon dioxide equivalent, which includes carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other greenhouse gases.
