NYU Prof: Fight climate change with hormone treatments on small children, ‘closes the growth plates’

Published on Oct 5, 2015

Interviewed on the Sunrise Weekend morning show, NYU Professor Matthew Liao promotes hormone treatments on children ‘when their small’ to close their ‘growth plates’ and thus stunt child growth. Professor Liao says this helps fight climate change since ‘larger people consume more energy than smaller people.’

PROFESSOR MATTHEW LIAO: “There’s this technique called preimplantation genetic diagnosis. And, what you do there is you can — it’s a technique that’s used for — sort of for fertility clinics.

HOST ANDREW O”KEEFE: “Right. So, IVF treatments and things?”

LIAO: “IVF treatments and you can get rid of — you can sort of detect sort of genetic diseases. So the idea is that maybe you can use the technique like that to select smaller children.”

O’KEEFE: “Okay. So a range of potential options that you select the genetic material that is bound to lead to smaller children.”

LIAO: “That’s right. That’s right.”

O’KEEFE: “But, it requires in vitro fertilization?”

LIAO: “That’s right. So that would require in vitro fertilization. Another possibility is you can use hormone treatments. So these are — we already give hormone treatments to children who are expected to be very very tall, excessively tall.

O’KEEFE: “Oh, okay.”

LIAO: “And, so you can give them –”

O’KEEFE: “You give them the hormone treatment in utero now do we?”

LIAO: “No, you give them when they’re small. And, so it closes the growth plates.”

HOST MONIQUE WRIGHT: “With the idea that smaller people would be more — or have a smaller carbon footprint?”

O’KEEFE: “Would they consume less?”

LIAO: “That’s right. So, other things being equal larger people consume more energy than smaller people. They also, for example, it takes more energy to transport larger people. They — you need more clothes — fabrics to clothes larger people rather than smaller people. They wear out shoes, carpets, et cetera, et cetera more than smaller people. So think of the life time carbon footprints. That’s quite a lot.”

  1. Kurt Vonnegut called it first in his novel “Slapstick” from way back in 1976: in it, the Chinese had the same idea, that if they shrink, they can use fewer resources.

Forgive the Wiki: “Western civilization is nearing collapse as oil runs out, and the Chinese are making vast leaps forward by miniaturizing themselves and training groups of hundreds to think as one. Eventually, the miniaturization proceeds to the point that they become so small that they cause a plague among those who accidentally inhale them, ultimately destroying Western civilization beyond repair.”

Other than the usual “we’re running out of oil” hysteria, that doesn’t sound like its far off the mark…

  2. Remember everyone conservatives are the extremists! They want to things to largely remain the same which is an EXTREME position. Engineering humans to be shorter is not only reasonable and mainstream but it’s all sciency and stuff too!

  3. Don’t need anything as complicated as bio-engineering. Liao knows very well that the Chinese made women’s feet smaller simply by binding them. Adult women in that fine culture often had feet only 3 to 4 inches long and had to be carried everywhere.

We can simply ship in a million Chinese expert in the art of feet binding and start binding all new babies. Should solve the problem in one generation and we’ll all have to huddle together because it will be so damn cold.

Perhaps I have uncovered Liao’s dastardly plan to reduce the size of Americans.

  4. What’s better than a small carbon footprint? No carbon footprint! C’mon Liao, take the next step for humanity and lead by example. The sooner you stop fogging a mirror, the safer the planet will be.

    • Oh, but he won’t: in was already in 1927 that G.K. Chesterton predicted that “Not being so much of a man as Malthus, he cannot bear to be a pessimist, so he becomes a sentimentalist. He mixes up this old plain brutal idea (that the poor must be forbidden to breed) with a lot of slipshod and sickly social ideals and promises which are flatly incompatible with it. But he is after all a practical man, and he will be
quite as brutal as his forbears when it comes to practice. And the practical upshot of the whole thing is plain enough. the various
Birth-Controllers l[…] never do talk about a danger from the comfortable classes, even from a more respectable section of the comfortable classes. The Gloomy Dean is not gloomy about there being
too many Dukes; and naturally not about there being too many Deans.
[…] The Birth-Controller does not bother about all these things, for the perfectly simple reason that it is not such people that he wants to control. What he wants to control is the populace, and he practically says so. He always insists that a workman has no right to have so many children, or that a slum is perilous because it is producing so many children. The question he dreads is “Why has not the workman a better wage? Why has not the slum family a better house?” His way of escaping from it is to suggest, not a larger house but a smaller family.” What he does say instead: ‘I will make a sacrifice, I will deprive myself of your children.'” As we see here in what Mr Liao has been advocating, nothing has changed in the eugenicists’ agenda since Chesterton wrote these words as Margaret Sanger was gathering them for a congress in Geneva all the way back then. Only their arsenal of methods.

  5. And all this time the North Korean dictators have been using malnutrition (if not famine) and poor medical care to make the average Nork much smaller and lighter than his relations to the South. Who knew of their unheralded contribution to solving, or mitigating, climate change? Seems like a Nobel of some kind has been earned.

  6. “Dr. Liao, white courtesy phone. Dr. Liao, you have a call from a Dr. Mengele holding for you, on any white courtesy phone.”

So, because I’m a foot taller than you and weight twice as much, I’m worse for the planet than you are and I should therefore die sooner? I shall consider that to be a threat, kill you, then I shall be carbon neutral for the rest of my life (since I’m fairly sure I’m more than halfway to my expiry date anyhow…)

  7. This dude is profoundly bent. There’s a special kind of insidiousness to his insanity.

    1. His intent is to, via IVF, create embryos, then see which ones have
traits to become bigger than the others and abort /destroy/cull them. Or
pharmaceutically reduce the growth of a human through injections.

    – His construct this would occur under is the fodder for dystopian
movies. For the scale of the human carbon footprint to be reduced this
would have to be common practice everywhere. Yet this can’t be
everywhere until there’s some type of Orwellian Societal upheaval that
results in government supervision over procreation. Which is what he
wants. This is some serious Cass Sunstein population control stuff.

    – Try selling this idea when people have rights and a choice to not
partake in this. No one in their right mind would. Ever. I mean who
wouldn’t want a pygmy for a kid? And who in their right mind would
shrink their future Duke U. bound 6’2″ LAX player to a 5’4″ adult?

    2. What he’s really talking about is something that could only be
inflicted upon the US or UK and Europe. These are the only societies
with IVF generally available to most of the general population. But done
on such a grand scale would necessitate government funding, involvement
and administration. So his (surely unintended consequence) would be to
hobble modern societies with smaller statured, weaker members. Meanwhile
the rest of the world screws like bunnies and cranks out normal sized
humans. We’ll lose at the Olympics. There goes our world Basketball
    domination.

    Screw this guy.
