Pope Francis Could Be Climate’s Secret Weapon Next Year – ‘Will reportedly personally lobby political and faith leaders with the goal of pushing them to commit to’ UN treaty

Pope Francis CREDIT: AP Photo/Jorge Saenz At the end of 2015, the nations of the world will meet in Paris and attempt to hammer out a global deal to cut greenhouse gas emissions. And Pope Francis hopes that the world’s Catholics, as well as other major religions, will be a big part of serious climate action. This includes a series of steps next year. Francis is expected to tell the planet’s 1.2 billion Catholics why acting on climate change is essential to the faith using an influential church document called an encyclical. This has been long-rumored, but will reportedly be released to the world’s 5,00 bishops and 400,000 priests following a papal visit to the hurricane-damaged city of Tacloban in the Philippines. In September, the Pope will take his message to the U.N. General Assembly in a New York address next year, according to John Vidal of the Guardian, who cited Vatican insiders. He will reportedly personally lobby political and faith leaders there, with the goal of pushing them to commit to real action ahead of the Paris meetings in December of next year. While it isn’t certain what exactly he will tell these leaders, it will likely be similar to what he has been telling Catholics everywhere since the beginning of his papacy. Earlier this year, Francis told a massive crowd in Rome, “if we destroy Creation, Creation will destroy us!” He has called the destruction of the rainforest a “sin,” and under his leadership, the Church held a five-day summit with scientists, economists, philosophers, astronomers, and other experts to explore ways the Catholic church could address climate and sustainability. Earlier this month during the climate talks in Lima, Catholic bishops from every continent called for “an end to the fossil fuel era.” This follows, they said, the need to prioritize “the immediate needs of the most vulnerable communities.” Addressing the causes and effects of climate change is a moral and social justice issue for them, as the impacts of a changing climate will disproportionately affect those who can least-ably adapt (and who did not emit most of the pollution in the first place). Francis’ close friend, Argentinian Bishop Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo is the Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Social Sciences. He said in an annual lecture to the British Catholic group Cafod last month: “today …

Warm Arctic Is Simply Part Of Natural Cycle

By Paul Homewood The most iconic symbol of the global warming scare is the “melting Arctic”. But is the Arctic any warmer than back in the 1930’s and 40’s? Certainly not in places like Akuryri, in Iceland, as GISS show. http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/show_station.cgi?id=620040630003&dt=1&ds=1 To get a fuller picture, I have calculated 30 year average temperatures at four stations, using GISS temperature data starting in 1900 (except Jan Mayen, which begins in 1921): Akureyri – Iceland Godthab Nuuk – Greenland Jan Mayen – Norway Archangel – Russia All stations are affected by Atlantic influences. I have worked out anomalies for each station, using a baseline of 1981-2010. The results are shown below. In all cases there is a concerted rise in temperatures from the start of the record, peaking in the 1950’s. This is followed by a steep decline. Temperatures are now back to, or still below in Nuuk and Akureyri’s case, earlier levels. Atlantic influences, and in particular the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, not only affect areas fringing the ocean itself, but much further east to Siberia. For instance, Ostrov Dikson shows a similar cyclical pattern: http://data.giss.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/gistemp/show_station.cgi?id=222206740006&dt=1&ds=1 The effect that the AMO, shown below, has on Arctic temperatures is unmistakeable. http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/psd/cgi-bin/gcos_wgsp/tsanalysis.pl?tstype1=91&tstype2=0&year1=1895&year2=&itypea=0&axistype=0&anom=0&plotstyle=0&climo1=&climo2=&y1=&y2=&y21=&y22=&length=&lag=&iall=0&iseas=1&mon1=0&mon2=11&Submit=Calculate+Results Based on previous cycles, the AMO maybe has another ten years before it starts its probably rapid decline. When that happens, temperatures across the Eastern Arctic will plummet. Sources Temperature data is from the GISS unadjusted dataset http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/station_data_v2/

Climate Craziness of the Week – AGW could trigger plants and soil in tipping point attack
Climate Craziness of the Week – AGW could trigger plants and soil in tipping point attack
Yes, somehow, more plants growing due to increased CO2 will cause more carbon dioxide in a vicious cycle. Notice three things about this study: 1. The world “could” 2. “modeling work”. 3. Lack of any paleo reference to such an event in Earth’s past during higher periods of CO2. From Princeton: Dirty pool: Soil’s large […]

Arctic Sea Ice In Canada Greater Than 1970’s
Arctic Sea Ice In Canada Greater Than 1970’s
http://notalotofpeopleknowthat.wordpress.com/2014/12/28/arctic-sea-ice-in-canada-greater-than-1970s
By Paul Homewood http://polarbearscience.com/2014/12/26/polar-bear-habitat-more-arctic-sea-ice-in-canada-this-week-than-in-early-1970s/ More of those darned inconvenient facts from Arctic mammal expert, Dr Susan Crockford: This week, Arctic sea ice in Canada, where 2/3 of the world’s polar bears live, had more sea ice than was present in the early 1970s. Globally, the ice is spitting-distance close to the 1981-2010 average calculated by the NSIDC for this date – which means lots of winter/spring hunting habitat for polar bears. This is the peak of the polar bear birthing season (both in the wild and in zoos.) Newborns will be snug in maternity dens built by their mothers onshore or on the sea ice; the rest of the population will be out on the ice. Regional ice charts going back to the late 1960s and early 1970s for this week show even more surprises — have a look. Read the rest here.

The carbon tax figures are in: Australians paid $14b to reduce global emissions by 0.004%!
The carbon tax figures are in: Australians paid $14b to reduce global emissions by 0.004%!
We can finally assess (sort of) the carbon tax in Australia. It ran for two years from July 2012 – July 2014 and cost Australians nearly $14 billion. The National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Office released Australian emissions statistics for the June Quarter of 2014. The headlines hitting the press this week are saying we reduced our emissions by 1.4%. The Greens are excited, but neither the journalists or the Greens have looked at the numbers. Not only is this reduction pathetically small on a global scale, but it’s smaller than the “noise” in the adjustments. Like most official statistics the emissions data get adjusted year after year, and often by 1 – 2%. We won’t really know what our emissions were, or what the fall was, for years to come… (if ever). Spot the effect of the Australian carbon tax in the graph of emissions by sector below. It operated for the last two years. The falls in electricity emissions started long before the carbon tax (and probably have more to do with the global financial crisis, a government unfriendly to small business, and the wild subsidies offered for solar power). French Alps – Snow strands 15,000 vehicles in Savoie

Chaos in the Alps – Massive snowfall leaves more than 2,000 people stranded at Chambery airport and shuts roads throughout Savoie Across the Savoie region, thousands of people were trapped in their cars, snowed in their chalets or stranded at airports as long-awaited snow finally dumped on the Alps – several feet, in some places. One man died when his vehicle slid into a ravine in the Isere region. Three others died in other snow-related incidents across France earlier in the week. Local gyms and community halls were opened up as shelters in the Savoy region on Saturday. “The police should have got people to fit chains this morning after half a metre [20 in] of snow fell last night,” said British driver Gavin Rigby, who spent 11 hours drivinf between Val d’Isere and Bourg Saint Maurice – a journey which would normally take 30 minutes. Heavy snow caused disruption to roads in Germany too, causing a 25km (16-mile) traffic jam on the A8 motorway near Stuttgart. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30613481 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/france/11314946/Chaos-in-the-Alps-as-massive-snowfall-traps-15000-cars.html Thanks to Dean Koehler and Bill Sellers for these links
