350.org Protests Allowing Fossil Fuel Lobbyists To Attend Lima UN Summit

Report from COP-20 in Lima: 350.org Protests Allowing Fossil Fuel Lobbyists To Attend

http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/globalwarmingorg/~3/R4vRWwphKTc/

My first day at the twentieth Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-20) in Lima, Peru was pleasant, but a little dull. The energy level of leaders, delegates, and environmental NGOs seems a little low. And I missed what sounds like the most interesting event of the day–a side event on carbon capture and storage (CCS). 350.org, other environmental pressure groups, and indigenous people’s groups from Colombia, Peru, and Canada staged a protest that delayed the event. They called on the UNFCC to ban fossil fuel lobbyists from attending the COP and all future climate negotiations. Spokesmen for indigenous communities accused Shell and Chevron of environmental crimes and human rights violations. 350.org’s point is that fossil fuels should not be used even with carbon capture and storage. The event was sponsored by the Global Carbon and Capture Storage Institute. Speakers from the World Coal Association and Shell were—astonishingly and amusingly—joined by Nicholas, Lord Stern (of Stern Review infamy). The protesters tried unsuccessfully to convince Stern not to speak. Perhaps he was being paid. The session on CCS was part of a series sponsored by the International Emissions Trading Association, whose corporate members hope to get rich off of energy-rationing policies that impoverish people. IETA is a strong supporter of the UN climate agenda. Shell Oil supports a carbon tax in the U S.

Geologist Dr. Don Easterbrook’s new paper: ‘The West Antarctic ice sheet is NOT collapsing, the retreat of these small glaciers is NOT caused by global warming’

Special to Climate Depot

‘UNSTOPPABLE COLLAPSE’ OF THE WEST ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET?’ ‘11-FOOT RISE IN SEA LEVEL?’ MIAMI, NEW ORLEANS AND NEW YORK DROWNED? 12.8 MILLION AMERICANS SUBMERGED WITH $2.4 TRILLION PROPERTY LOSS?  A REALILTY CHECK

Dr. Don J. Easterbrook, Western Washington University, Bellingham, WA [Geologist Dr. Don J. Easterbrook, Emeritus Professor at Western Washington University, a UN IPCC expert reviewer, has authored ten books and 150 journal publications. Presented 31 research papers at international meetings in 13 countries outside the US]

Geologist Dr. Don Easterbrook debunks ‘absurd’ new warmist study claiming 1,700 U.S. cities will be below sea level by 2100 — Easterbrook: ‘The rate used by [Lead Author] Strauss for his predictions is more than 10 times the rate over the past century!’

Last May, a New York Times headline stated Scientists Warn of Rising Oceans From Polar Melt and goes on to say: “A large section of the mighty West Antarctica ice sheet has begun falling apart and its continued melting now appears to be unstoppable and “the melting could destabilize neighboring parts of the ice sheet and a rise in sea level of 10 feet or more may be unavoidable in coming centuries.” Virtually every newspaper and TV news show went ballistic with dire predictions of the ‘unstoppable’ catastrophe about to unfold. The two papers on Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers in West Antarctica that triggered this avalanche of alarmism have just recently been published and have triggered a renewed outburst of catastrophic predictions.

A Washington Post headline states Research casts alarming light on decline of West Antarctic glaciersand goes on to say that “a rapidly melting section of the West Antarctic ice sheet appears to be in an irreversible state of decline, with nothing to stop the glaciers in this area from melting into the seaand “the region’s mile-thick ice sheet could collapse and raise sea levels as much as 11 feet.” “The consequences of such an amount of sea-level rise for the United States — or for any other coastal region — are staggering to contemplate.” “12.8 million Americans live on land less than 10 feet above their local high-tide line.” “$2.4 trillion worth of property is occupying this land, excluding Hawaii and Alaska.” “The cities that would be most affected include Miami, New Orleans, and New York.” “Within 100 to 200 years, one-third of West Antarctica could be gone.”The effects of climate change are outpacing scientific predictions, driven in part, scientists say, by soaring levels of greenhouse gases in the

By Paul Homewood http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2014/20141124_hurricaneseasonwrapup_2014.html With the hurricane season now officially at an end, it’s time to look back on yet another quiet year in the Atlantic. http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2014/20141124_hurricaneseasonwrapup_2014.html There have been eight storms, ranked as tropical storms or stronger, which compares to the 30-year average of twelve. Only one storm, Hurricane Arthur, made landfall in the US in July. The storm, which formed as a tropical depression on June 30, 2014, made landfall over the Shackleford Banks, between Cape Lookout and Beaufort, North Carolina, as a Category 2 hurricane. Sustained winds at the time of landfall were 77 mph with winds gusting to 101 mph. Arthur also went into the record books as the earliest hurricane to strike North Carolina in a season since records began in 1851, the National Hurricane Center said. The previous record was July 11, 1901. The hurricane did minimal damage to the Tar Heel State but caused major damage farther up the Eastern Seaboard. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were hard-hit by Arthur, which was post-tropical when it impacted the Canadian provinces on July 5. It was the strongest storm to affect the region since Hurricane Juan in 2003. It is now nine years since the last major hurricane (Cat3+), Wilma, hit the US in 2005. This is the longest spell on record without a major hurricane. Australia say NO to UN Green Climate Fund – bypasses Green Gravy Train

Good news. Australia say NO to UN Green Climate Fund – bypasses Green Gravy Train

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3234861/posts

Good news. The Australian government is cutting out the enviro-middlemen, saying “No” to one $11 billion Green Blob.Australia stands as the only wealthy country to have ruled out a contribution to the United Nations’ Green Climate Fund. As of last week, the fund had received pledges from 22 countries totalling $US9.6 billion ($A11.2 billion) against an initial funding target of $US10 billion. The UN money making scheme was never about the poor or the environment. If it was they wouldn’t be wasting “aid” on so-called clean energy subsidies, which won’t change the weather:The fund is a new financing mechanism to help developing…

Global Warming Will Make the Earth Uninhabitable and Other Cli-Fi Funnies

You Ought to Have A Look: Global Warming Will Make the Earth Uninhabitable and Other Cli-Fi Funnies

http://www.cato.org/blog/you-ought-have-look-global-warming-will-make-earth-uninhabitable-other-cli-fi-funnies

Patrick J. Michaels and Paul C. “Chip” Knappenberger You Ought to Have a Look is a feature from the Center for the Study of Science posted by Patrick J. Michaels and Paul C. (“Chip”) Knappenberger. While this section will feature all of the areas of interest that we are emphasizing, the prominence of the climate issue is driving a tremendous amount of web traffic. Here we post a few of the best in recent days, along with our color commentary. ——– A favorite global warming chesnut is that human-caused climate change will make the planet uninhabitable for Homo sapiens (that’s us). The latest iteration of this cli-fi classic appears in this week’s New York Times’ coverage of the U.N. climate talks taking place in Lima, Peru (talks that are destined to fail, as we point out here). Back in September, The World Health Organization (WHO) released a study claiming that global warming as a result of our pernicious economic activity will lead to a quarter million extra deaths each year during 2030 to 2050. Yup, starting a mere 15 years from today. Holy cats! That raised the antennae of Indur M. Goklany, a science and technical policy analyst who studies humanity’s well-being and the impact of environmental change upon it. Goklany detailed many of his findings in a 2007 book he wrote for Cato, The Improving State of the World: Why We’re Living Longer, Healthier, More Comfortable Lives on a Cleaner Planet. As you may imagine, Goklany, found much at fault with the WHO study and wrote his findings up for the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF)—a U.K. think tank which produces a lot of good material on global warming. In “Unhealthy Exaggeration: The WHO report on climate change” Goklany doesn’t pull any punches. You ought to have a look at the full report, but in the meantime, here is the Summary: In the run-up to the UN climate summit in September 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) released, with much fanfare, a study that purported to show that global warming will exacerbate under nutrition (hunger), malaria, dengue, excessive heat and coastal flooding and thereby cause 250,000 additional deaths annually between 2030 and 2050. This study, however, is fundamentally flawed. Firstly, it uses climate model results that have been shown to run …

Lima hypocrisy alert: Bianca Jagger lectures us on climate

I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning. Here we have the familiar, nauseating sight of the rich and privileged lecturing the little people on how to behave: Whatever her youthful reputation as the wife of a world-famous rock star and glittery jet setter, Bianca Jagger has committed much of the past 30 years […]

Yay! Australia second-worst country for climate action!

Yay! Australia second-worst country for climate action!

http://australianclimatemadness.com/2014/12/09/yay-australia-second-worst-country-for-climate-action

Disappointing we weren’t outright worst overall, but second worst is pretty good. We were, however, outright worst for industrialised nations. So in every cloud of farts there’s a silver lining. While other nations gleefully haemorrhage money on pointless climate mitigation action and other sacrifices to Gaia (which, as any fule kno, will make no difference to the climate whatsoever), […]

Near Record Sea Ice During The Hottest Year Ever

http://stevengoddard.wordpress.com/2014/12/09/near-record-sea-ice-during-the-hottest-year-ever/

The amount of sea ice on Earth is not far from a record high, as NCDC declares it the hottest year ever. arctic.atmos.uiuc.edu/cryosphere/timeseries.global.anom.1979-2008 NCDC doesn’t actually have any idea what the temperature is near the poles, but that doesn’t stop … Continue reading →
