Climate Depot’s Exclusive Round Up of Reactions to President Obama’s new global warming report.
Obama climate report exposed: ‘Leading authors of this report include staffers for activist groups like the Union of Concerned Scientists, Planet Forward, The Nature Conservancy, and Second Nature’ – Heartland’s James Taylor: ‘Few objective climate experts will take this report seriously. Even those scientists who are not overtly affiliated with environmental activist groups were almost uniformly on the record as global warming alarmists before being chosen to write this report. The only real surprise in the report is it didn’t take the opportunity to trumpet the Union of Concerned Scientists’ call for U.S. unilateral nuclear disarmament.
Update: Watch Now: Marc Morano on TV explains Obama’s climate report: ‘It’s bastardizing science’ – ‘This is a political report meant to give cover for a political agenda’ – Morano: ‘Sarah Palin, the former VP candidate, was ridiculed for implying she could see Russia from her house or from Alaska. Well now they say you can see global warming from your back yard or out your window…They have basically said every storm now is proof of global warming. And we must ‘act now’ to stop bad weather. As though acts of Congress or our EPA can stop storms…This is a political report — predetermined science. They selected lead authors from Nature Conservancy, from Union of Concerned scientists from other environmental groups.’
Climate Depot’s Morano Statement on Obama climate report: ‘This report is contrary to peer-reviewed studies and observations’ – Morano: ‘This report is a misdirection. Obama has entered his 2nd term lame duck status and with climate executive orders he does not need Congress to ‘do something’ about global warming. This report is contrary to peer-reviewed studies and observations. By every measure, so called extreme weather is showing no trend or declining trends on 50-100 year timescales. Droughts, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes are not increasing due to man-made global warming. Why does the report now call ‘global warming’ a new name, so-called ‘climate disruption’? Simple answer: Due to earth’s failure to warm — no global warming for nearly 18 years – another name was necessary to attempt to gin up fear. Now every storm is offered up as some sort of ‘proof’ of global warming. This report is pre-determined science. They chose scientists and activists who agreed with their climate narrative and they endorsed scary predictions of future.’
Climatologist Dr. Judith Curry rips Obama climate report for ‘false premise that any change in the 20th century has been caused by AGW. Worse yet is the spin being put on this by the Obama admin.’ — Curry: ‘Some of the basic underlying climate science and impacts reported is contradictory to the recent IPCC AR5 reports…the phrase ‘climate change’ is now officially meaningless. The report effectively implies that there is no climate change other than what is caused by humans, and that extreme weather events are equivalent to climate change.
Prominent scientist reverses belief in AGW: ‘One of the most eminent climate scientists, the Swede Lennart Bengtsson, has defected to the camp of climate skeptics’ – Bengtsson’s conclusion: ‘It would be wrong to conclude from the IPCC report and similar reports that the science is settled.’
Year-to-year variability is now climate! Meteorologist Anthony Watts Rips Obama Admin. & Wash. Post: ‘Houston, we have a dumbass problem’ – ‘Nothing else really describes the ridiculousness…in a maddeningly idiotic story from the Washington Post’ – Watts unloads: ‘Let’s indulge them, let’s say it is ALL caused by ‘global warming’. What will they do about it? Tax it? Issue a presidential order? Make emitting CO2 a crime? Like Nature cares what they think or do. Idiots.’
Climatologist Dr. Roger Pielke Sr. rips ‘failure’ of new Fed Report: ‘That much of the media accepted the NCA without questioning its findings and conclusions either indicates they are naive or they have chosen to promote a particular agenda and this report fits their goal’ – Former Colorado State Climatologist Pielke Sr. praises Climatologist Dr. Judith Curry for ‘succinctly showing the major failure of their report.’
1974 State Of The Climate Report – Global Cooling Will Kill Us All – ‘1974 climate report said that global cooling was going to cause floods, famines, extreme weather, and would kill us all.’
Obama Climate Report ‘designed to scare people and build political support for unpopular policies such as carbon taxes’ – Marlo Lewis analysis: ‘National Climate Assessment report: Alarmists offer untrue, unrelenting doom and gloom’ – ‘The new report is an alarmist document designed to scare people and build political support for unpopular policies such as carbon taxes, cap-and-trade, and EPA regulatory mandates.’
Meteorologist Anthony Watts: Report ‘looks more like a glossy sales pitch from a company that is pushing a product they know people may not need’ — ‘Who WOULDN’T want better weather? Just buy our product.’
Physicist: ‘Another work of science fiction has been produced by global warming alarmist ‘scientists’ — ‘The newly released National Climate Assessment which manages not only to contradict decades of climatic data collected by NOAA and its predecessors but also contradicts the report on climate extremes released last year by the alarmist UN-IPCC.’
‘Follow the money’: Climatologist Dr. Roy Spencer pans – Part of report ‘is just simply made up’ – ‘There is no fingerprint of human-caused versus naturally-caused climate change’ – Climatologist Dr. Spencer: ‘Follow the money, folks. This glitzy, 840-page report took a lot of your tax dollars to generate, and involved only those “experts” who are willing to play the game. It is difficult to answer in its entirety because government has billions of dollars to invest in this, while most of us who try to bring some sanity to the issue must do it in our spare time, because we aren’t paid to do it. It is nowhere near balanced regarding science, costs-versus-benefits, or implied policy outcomes. Like the previous two National Assessment reports, it takes global climate models which cannot even hindcast what has happened before, which over-forecast global average warming, which are known to have essentially zero skill for regional (e.g. U.S.) predictions, and uses them anyway to instill fear into the masses, so that we might be led to safety by politicians…we can’t expect government reports, which are written to facilitate desired policy changes, to provide balance’
‘There is no way to know whether ‘The global warming of the past 50 years is primarily due to human activities…’, because there is no fingerprint of human-caused versus naturally-caused climate change. To claim the changes are “unprecedented” cannot be demonstrated with reliable data, and are contradicted by some published paleoclimate data which suggests most centuries experience substantial warming or cooling.’
Report claim: ‘Climate change threatens human health and well-being in many ways, including through more extreme weather events and wildfire, decreased air quality, and diseases transmitted by insects, food, and water.’ Spencer Reaction: ‘Most of this is just simply made up, and ignores the positive benefits of access to affordable energy which far outweigh the negatives. If there has been an increase in anxiety and PTSD, it isn’t from severe weather events…it’s from the relentless fear mongering by politicians and the news media.’
Climatologists: ‘What the National Climate Assessment Doesn’t Tell You’ – PAUL C. “CHIP” KNAPPENBERGER and PATRICK J. MICHAELS: ‘The bias in the National Climate Assessment (NCA) towards pessimism (which we have previously detailed here) has implications throughout the federal regulatory process because the NCA is cited (either directly or indirectly) as a primary source for the science of climate change for justifying federal regulation aimed towards mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Since the NCA gets it wrong, so does everyone else.’
‘The idea that human-caused global warming is going to increase heat-related mortality is simply outdated and wrong. In fact, the opposite is more likely the case—that is, a warming climate will decrease the population’s sensitivity to heat events as it induces adaptation.’
Meteorologist Joe D’Aleo: ‘The senate & Obama admin. is filled with scientific illiterates and dangerous agenda driven politicians like John Podesta’ – Obama tries to persuade on Climate: The satellite images viewed by President Obama before a meeting with eight Western governors were stark, showing how snowpack in California’s mountains had shrunk by 86 percent in a single year. “It was a ‘Houston, we have a problem’ moment,” recalled White House counselor John D. Podesta, one of two aides who briefed the president that February day. Obama mentioned the images several times as he warned the governors that political leaders had no choice but to cope with global warming’s impact.
D’Aleo Rips: ‘In 2010/11, near record or record western snowpack lasted well into the summer. They would have been seeing widespread white if he had flown then. Its called weather. Snows improved in March and April in the west. Precipitation in the Sierra is down 38% for the season but is likely to recover with El Nino the next year. Meanwhile ice on the Great Lakes is setting all-time records for this time of year and globally sea ice is at a new record.’
Prof. Roger Pielke Jr. on new fed report: Claim: ‘Risks associated with extreme events like hurricanes are increasing’ – Pielke Jr.: ‘Actually: US hurricane landfalls have decreased by ~25% since 1900′
’600 page litany of doom’: Weather Channel Co-Founder John Coleman slams Federal climate report: A ‘total distortion of the data and agenda driven, destructive episode of bad science gone berserk’ – Coleman: ‘When the temperature data could no longer be bent to support global warming, they switched to climate change and now blame every weather and climate event on CO2 despite the hard, cold fact that the “radiative forcing” theory they built their claims on has totally failed to verify.’ ‘The current bad science is all based on a theory that the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from the exhaust of the burning of fossil fuels leads to a dramatic increase in “the greenhouse effect” causing temperatures to skyrocket uncontrollably. This theory has failed to verify and is obviously dead wrong. But the politically funded and agenda driven scientists who have built their careers on this theory and live well on the 2.6 billion dollars of year of Federal grants for global warming/climate change research cling to this theory and bend the data spread to support the glorified claims in their reports and papers.’
Dem Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid: Koch Brothers are the ‘main cause’ of climate change — Reid: ‘They are one of the main causes of this. Not a cause, the main cause.’
Senator accuses Obama of using global warming as a fund-raising gimmick – Republicans Portray Obama Climate Push As A Distraction – Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) accused Obama of seeing global warming as a fund-raising gimmick. “The president is spending part of today talking about climate change, when [where] Americans want to see a change in the climate is the employment climate,” said Barrasso. “The president continues to be held hostage by large donors to his party.”
Warmist Chris Mooney in Mother Jones: Obama climate report ‘shows, unequivocally, that we simply do not live in the same America any more, thanks to climate change. It is a different place, a different country’
Paper: ‘It has nothing to do with climate, everything to do with power. It’s a green coup’ – Obama using report to ‘simply declare an emergency and wield power without consent or involvement from Congress’ -‘It asserts as fact, for instance, the unknowable and unprovable: That the climate’s many effects are “expected to become increasingly disruptive across the nation throughout this century and beyond.’ – ‘It’s not the disruption of the climate that we should be worried about; it’s the disruption of our economy and constitutional rights.’
Analysis: Obama’s Last Shot – Climate Change – And Why It’s Doomed To Fail — ‘Fortunately, there’s some good news too: you don’t need to believe a word because, just like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s reports, this document is much more a political one than a scientific one.’
Bill Clinton, Barack Obama weather deja vu – Bob King – POLITICO.com: ‘In October, 1997, Bill Clinton called Al Roker to the White House to help push global warming alarmism, in an attempt to pass Kyoto’ – Kyoto was unanimously rejected by the Senate, and since the last Al Roker global warming event 17 years ago, global temperatures have fallen nearly 0.1 degrees.
Krauthammer: Global Warming ‘Oldest Superstition Around,’ ‘The Rain Dance Of Native Americans’ – ‘Ultimately what we’re talking about here is human sin with pollution of carbon. It’s the oldest superstition around. It was in the Old Testament. It’s in the rain dance of Native Americans. If you sin, the skies will not cooperate. This is quite superstitious and I am waiting for science which doesn’t declare itself definitive but it otherwise convincing.’
GOP Rep. Lamar Smith: ‘White House Climate Report Stretches Truth’ – ‘This is a political document intended to frighten Americans into believing that any abnormal weather we experience is the direct result of human CO2 emissions’ – Smith: ‘In reality, there is little science to support any connection between climate change and more frequent or extreme storms. It’s disappointing that the Obama administration feels compelled to stretch the truth in order to drum up support for more costly and unnecessary regulations and subsidies.’
Warmists unhappy with Obama: CNN’s John King, Panelists Hit Obama From Left on Climate Change: ‘Why Did They Wait So Long?’ – CNN’s John King, along with the AP’s Julie Pace and National Journal’s Ron Fournier, targeted President Obama from the left on Tuesday’s New Day over the issue of climate change. King highlighted Obama’s interviews with meteorologists in order to “push his agenda for climate change,” and wondered, “If the President has this power…through executive authority, and this issue is so important to him, why did they wait so long? Why not do this in the first term?”
Obama faces skeptical meteorologists – ‘A 2010 study by George Mason University’s centre for climate change communications found that only 19% of TV weather forecasters accepted that human activity was the main driver of climate change.’
Scientists Claim That Sea Levels Could Rise 7 Feet – Government scientists say that the rate of sea level rise has doubled since 1992 and is projected to “rise by another 1 to 4 feet in this century.” But this is only the lower end of how much sea levels could rise. “A wider range of scenarios, ranging from 8 inches to 6.6 feet of rise by 2100, has been suggested for use in risk-based analyses,” according to the Obama administration’s National Climate Assessment (NCA).
Obama Admin’s John Podesta: ‘Zero’ Chance Congress Can Block Obama Agenda – Offers proof of AGW: ‘I’d say that probably look out your window’ – Podesta predicts victory: ‘If you want to try to side with the polluters and argue to the American public that climate change is not happening, today, tomorrow and certainly in the future, that’s going to be a losing argument.’
How Extreme Weather Convinced Obama to Fight Climate Change – Aides say that Hurricane Sandy also shook the president, and changed his thinking on the issue. Sandy was devastating in a sort of disaster flick-meets-biblical End Times sense; floods, fires, winds, and rain swallowed lives, overtook buildings, and knocked out the lights of the nation’s biggest city.
Wash Post: For President Obama, a renewed focus on climate: ‘Obama will conduct interviews from the White House with local and national TV meteorologists, who will also be briefed by senior administration officials.’
