Mike’s ‘hidden decline’ found in new study: Tree-ring analysis shows no warming in eastern Mediterranean past 900 years

The Register reports: There’s interesting news on the climate beat this week, especially given the background of the just-released IPCC AR5 report – which blames humanity for warming the planet. A new, comprehensive study examining temperatures in the Eastern Mediterranean region over the last 900 years indicates that global warming and associated climate changes actually […]

German Geologist: Despite Shrillness “No Hard Evidence Of CO2, No Cause For Alarm…Key Findings Not Properly Reported”

German Geologist: Despite Shrillness “No Hard Evidence Of CO2, No Cause For Alarm…Key Findings Not Properly Reported”

What follows is more reaction to AR5 SPM – from two German experts.
First I asked geologist Dr. Sebastian Lüning by e-mail for his impression of the IPCC’s summary. Lüning has published over 20 peer-reviewed papers in the field of geology and is the co-author of the IPCC critical book “The Neglected Sun“.

He summarizes: “Once you boil down the science, there no case left for alarm.” He continues:
When I read the reports in the mainstream media, I was shocked that some of the key findings were not properly reported: unexpected warming stop during the last 15 years not explainable by current models, the Medieval Warm Period in at least parts of the world was as warm as today. This should have been reported. Instead they wrote that the sea level threat increased, which is not really true. There has been no acceleration of sea level in the past few decades and a large European Research Consortium has recently ruled out the most scary sea level prognoses (European Research Consortium dismisses extreme sea level rise prognoses). The East Antarctic Ice Cap and Arctic sea ice trend actually is growing, drought and storm occurrences are well within the limits of natural variability. Current Greenland temperatures are on the level of the 1930s. Forget the models, the real data show that there is no cause for any alarm.”
Lüning also left a reader comment at NoTricksZone. One part of his comment is worth mentioning again (my emphasis):
We argue mostly with historical and geological data which clearly show that natural climate factors always played a key role in pre-industrial times, hence also today. Interestingly, we have not found any hard evidence for CO2 having been a climate driver in the past. Therefore we say that half the warming of the last 150 years could be man-made at most. This is a maximum value. It could also be that CO2 has not been involved at all or only marginally in the warming we have seen.”
Also veteran meteorologist Dr. Karsten Brandt at donnerwetter.de had some criticism for the IPCC.

The warming stop of the last 15 years is explained by the oceans absorbing heat more strongly. This stop in warming …

The First Alpine Glaciers Are Growing Again

The First Alpine Glaciers Are Growing Again

http://www.thegwpf.org/alpine-glaciers-growing/

For the Swiss Alps 2013 was a good summer. Not since ten years ago have the glaciers lost as little mass as this year. And some seem to be gaining a little weight.

«It would appear that the Findel glacier is gaining mass», says Swiss glaciologist Matthias Huss. Foto: Keystone
The Findel glacier high above Zermatt presents itself proudly these days. The nearly eight-kilometre long white tongue shines brightly in the autumn sun. “It has been a long time since so little ice has melted. It even looks as if the glacier had gained a little weight, “says glaciologist Matthias Huss of the University of Freiburg. He attributes this positive development to the long and snowy winter. “And although July and August were very hot, the thick layer of snow protected the ice.”
In recent summers, the glaciers in Switzerland lost a meter in thickness on average. Particularly disastrous were the years 2011, 2006 and 2003, in which the loss was two to three meters for some glaciers. At that time there was little snow in winter and in spring, and it got warm very early.
The consequences were also felt by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). Lakes came into existence where glaciers paths used to be, and rock appeared where ice had been. “We had to adapt the approach routes to our huts,” says Ulrich Delang, head of the SAC huts. About 30 ascents to huts have been affected by glacier retreat.
To measure the volume changes of glaciers, researchers drilled rods into the ice. In spring and autumn they then measure how much of the rods are sticking out of the ice. In this way they can calculate the volume of the increase or the melting.
This week glaciologist Matthias Huss and his team completed the measurements on these glaciers: Findelgletscher, Pizolgletscher, St. Annafirn, Vadret dal Corvatsch, the Glacier du Tsanfleuron and the Glacier de la Plaine Morte. The data have not been fully evaluated yet, but it turns out that the melting has slowed compared to in previous years. For example, the Pizolgletscher has only lost about 50 centimetres in thickness. “In general the glaciers have lost less mass than in any of the last ten years,” says Huss.
This is also the result of measurements by the glacier researcher Andreas Bauder of the ETH Zurich. “There are signs …

Nigel Lawson: IPCC Brings The Good Name Of Science Into Disrepute — fuels is economic nonsense and ‘morally outrageous’ for the developing world

Nigel Lawson: IPCC Brings The Good Name Of Science Into Disrepute

http://www.thegwpf.org/nigel-lawson-ipcc-brings-good-science-disrepute/

The IPCC’s call to phase out fossil fuels is economic nonsense and ‘morally outrageous’ for the developing world

Former chancellor Lord Lawson, now chairman of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, gives his verdict on the IPCC report.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which published on Friday the first instalment of its latest report, is a deeply discredited organisation. Presenting itself as the voice of science on this important issue, it is a politically motivated pressure group that brings the good name of science into disrepute.
Its previous report, in 2007, was so grotesquely flawed that the leading scientific body in the United States, the InterAcademy Council, decided that an investigation was warranted. The IAC duly reported in 2010, and concluded that there were “significant shortcomings in each major step of [the] IPCC’s assessment process”, and that “significant improvements” were needed. It also chastised the IPCC for claiming to have “high confidence in some statements for which there is little evidence”.
Since then, little seems to have changed, and the latest report is flawed like its predecessor.
Perhaps this is not so surprising. A detailed examination of the 2007 report found that two thirds of its chapters included among its authors people with links to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and there were many others with links to other ‘green’ activist groups, such as Greenpeace.
In passing, it is worth observing that what these so-called green groups, and far too many of the commentators who follow them, wrongly describe as ‘pollution’ is, in fact, the ultimate in green: namely, carbon dioxide – a colourless and odourless gas, which promotes plant life and vegetation of all kinds; indeed, they could not survive without it. It is an established scientific fact that, over the past 20 years, the earth has become greener, largely thanks to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide.
Be that as it may, as long ago as 2009, the IPCC chairman, Dr Rajendra Pachauri – who is a railway engineer and economist by training, not a scientist, let alone a climate scientist – predicted that “when the IPCC’s fifth assessment comes out in 2013 or 2014, there will be a major revival of interest in action that has to be taken. People are going to say: ‘My God, we are going to have to take action much faster than …

Arctic Ice Growing Fast: ‘Having effectively tied with 2009 for the highest minimum since 2006, Arctic ice extent is now refreezing, and is now well above the 2009’

Having effectively tied with 2009 for the highest minimum since 2006, Arctic ice extent is now refreezing, and is now well above the 2009 level, according to DMI.
NSIDC figures also show current extent to be 50,000 sq km above the same day in 2009. More significantly, it is within 10,000 sq km of the 2005 figure.
More at the end of the month.
