It hasn’t built a car in over a year, according to Reuters, but has gone through $529 million in government funds. And that’s just one example of the government’s Advanced […]

Bloomberg reports: In China, at least 11 people have died from heatstroke since July, the Shanghai Daily reported Aug. 1, citing local authorities. “The hot summer this year is not a result of human activities, but it is true we have increasingly hotter summers and global warming is in the background,” said Takehiko Mikami, a […]

CREDIT: @OFA GRANITE BAY, California — A group of 20 constituents presented Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) (in absentia) with a Silver Unicorn Award for his continued denial of climate science at an event Tuesday afternoon. Across the country, Organizing for Action activists gathered this week to hand out “Congressional Climate Denial Awards” to the most stringent deniers of climate science on Capitol Hill. The trophy itself was a silver unicorn, because, as one California organizer noted, climate change deniers are apparently willing to believe anything. ThinkProgress attended one such award ceremony in a plush suburb of Sacramento represented by McClintock. Watch highlights from the event: The California congressman made his climate denier status public in 2009 when he defiantly announced that “We’re all told of course the debate is over and that all the scientists agree… and as all of you know, that is succinctly not the case.” The post VIDEO: Constituents Give GOP Congressman A ‘Climate Denial Award’ appeared first on ThinkProgress.

Global warming can’t slow growth of redwoods or sequoias, new study shows – San Jose Mercury News”We’re not seeing any evidence of declining growth rates,” said Steve Sillett, a forestry professor at Humboldt State and nationally known redwoods expert. “In fact, a lot of the sites are exhibiting increasing rates of growth over the last 100 years.”It may be that the trees prefer warmer temperatures, or that they are benefiting from more sunlight, a longer growing season or even decades of fire suppression. Or they might even be responding well to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere…Redwood forests near the California-Oregon border have seen the largest surge in wood production, with growth rates since the 1970s up to 45 percent faster now than at any time in the past 200 years.

 Excerpts:

The Medieval Warm Period (MWP) was a global climatic anomaly that encompassed a few centuries on either side of AD 1000, when temperatures in many parts of the world were even warmer than they are currently. The degree of warmth and associated changes in precipitation, however, varied from region to region and from time to time; and, therefore, the MWP was manifest differently in different parts of the planet. In this Summary, what occurred in China is reviewed.

Proxy climate records obtained from twenty prior studies to derive a 2000- year temperature history of the northeastern, southern and western sections of the Tibetan Plateau [reveal], in each case, there was more than one prior 50-year period of time when the mean temperature of each region was warmer than it was over the most recent 50-year period.

In the case of the northeastern sector of the Plateau, all of the maximum-warmth intervals occurred during the Medieval Warm Period.

The temperature of the 20th century in eastern China is still within the threshold of the variability of the last 2000 years, which observation clearly indicates that the Chinese data provide no evidence for the hypothesis that the eastern part of the country’s 20th-century warming – or even a small part of it – was human-induced.

The existence of this millennial-scale oscillation of climate, with its prior periods of higher thanurrent temperatures, clearly demonstrates that there is nothing unusual about earth’s present climatic state, except that it is surprisingly cool , considering how much more CO2 there is in the air nowadays than there was during the warmer Medieval and Roman Warm Periods.

During the past two millennia, a warming trend in the 20th century was clearly detected, but the warming magnitude was smaller than the maximum level of the Medieval Warm Period.

What is more, they say that  “the modern warm period has lasted [only] 20 years from 1987 to 2006,” and that the annual mean temperature series of China since AD 1880 indicates that the country was actually warmer in the mid- 1940s than it was at the time of their study.

New paper questions simplistic radiative forcing assumptions of the UN IPCC — Published in Geophysical Research Letters

New paper questions simplistic radiative forcing assumptions of the IPCC

http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.com/2013/08/new-paper-questions-simplistic.html

A new paper published in Geophysical Research Letters finds it is incorrect to assume that radiative forcing from greenhouse gases can be added to negative radiative forcing from agricultural expansion to determine climate change. According to the authors, “negative forcing from agricultural expansion is approximately balanced by a radiatively equivalent increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, significant changes in temperature, precipitation, and the timing of climate change result. These idealized experiments demonstrate the non-additivity of radiative forcing from land use change and greenhouse gases and point to the need for new climate change metrics or the development of climate policies and assessment protocols that do not rely on single dimensional metrics.” The IPCC projections and climate models use this simplistic assumption, which this paper has now demonstrated to be incorrect.

On the additivity of radiative forcing between land use change and greenhouse gasesAndrew D. Jones 1,*, William D. Collins 1,2,Margaret S. Torn 1,3
In scientific and policy contexts, radiative forcing—an external change in Earth’s mean radiative balance—has been suggested as a metric for evaluating the strength of climate perturbations resulting from different climate change drivers such as greenhouse gases and surface physical effects of land use change. However, the utility of this approach has been questioned given the spatially concentrated and sometimes nonradiative nature of land use climate disturbances. Here we show that when negative forcing from agricultural expansion is approximately balanced by a radiatively equivalent increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, significant changes in temperature, precipitation, and the timing of climate change result. These idealized experiments demonstrate the nonadditivity of radiative forcing from land use change and greenhouse gases and point to the need for new climate change metrics or the development of climate policies and assessment protocols that do not rely on single dimensional metrics.
